Racism in Argentina is a day in day out thing. It goes far beyond football, no one here thinks twice about it… And since I know people from the south of brazil- and i vacation with them in uruguay in punta del este- i know racism is as big there as it is here.

The truth is, here in Argentina a black player (i.e. African) from colombia or some place similar, will be treated 100% better than a "native/negro" from argentina… Its the way we are and we won't change

Racism will forever be a part of life...but taking it out of our beautiful game is a big step. It should be done...not just ignored because it tends to be a tad bit more accepted in South America.

It happens down there, but I'm not sure if I'd go as far as to say it is just as big. As far as football goes, it definitely is not (as big).

Its a big thing in my experiences with people from rio grande do sul… Al of whom were racist…

Which by the way, is the best province in brazil in my opinion. I could never live any where else… The though of sao paulo or rio is horrifying.

After talking to you all, i'm gonna be forced to uruguayan teams for this copa

Brilliant logic displayed here: racist abuse is heinous, uncivilized... but it's deep-seated, therefore efforts to stamp it out shouldn't even be attempted.

Of course this wouldn't fly for any other shameful aspect of any society. No decent person will say, Look man, corruption is terrible and harmful, but it's part of everyday life, so stop trying to correct it and just get on with it.

As a Peruvian, I hope they come down on these fans hard.

And moving on to soccer-related issues, the Garcilaso win is absolutely amazing.

They have a pretty shitty team even for Peruvian league standards. They lost most of their best players from last year and their signings were journeymen and even 2nd division players. Yes, Peruvian 2nd division.

On top of that, for some reason they're not playing Cusco but rather in Huancayo. A city that's about a 10-hour drive from Cusco. So they couldn't have had their own fans there.

    What standards? :D

Seriously, given that they finished runner-up in each of the last two years, and topped the first phase of last year's Descentralizado, they're definitely one of the strongest teams here (not to be confused with being a big team...they're going to need more than five years of existence to even come close). They may eventually sputter out like U. San Martín de Porres, and they clearly turn to crap when they travel down to sea level; but by local standards Garcilaso are pretty good.

Cruzeiro ended so well last year's Brasilerao, I expected more from them. Good for Garcilaso. Hope they get punished for the racist crap though. It's inexcusable.

Cali did well, in spite of their coaching/management troubles. Cerro Porteño is a very inconsistent team though. Typical of most Paraguayan clubs, like Nacional and Guaraní. You never know when they're going to show well, and when they're going to have a stinker. I'm going to miss Libertad.

León, arguably the best Mexican team in Libertadores, had a bit too much trouble getting the three points from a 10-man Fla at home. Playing that way, they won't make it out of group. I liked the way Emelec ended the season (in particular their 3-0 destruction of Dep. Quito), so right now I give them the edge over the CONCACAF club.

Peñarol played badly. Empataron de suerte.

    great post

sounds like the older poster dominican peru, is only used to see traditional teams on top or representing such high 'standards' that no longer show results.
I did not see that game, what kind of attendance they have and can you post the line-up? does anybody knows whith they are in a different city/stadium?

I guess they used the Huancayo to keep the "altura" advantage. Otherwise they could have used that white elephant Universitario has in Lima.

They're the typical team that performs well despite being very limited talent-wise.

But this off season they became even less talented as their few quality players left and they brought in extremely low-budget signings. I was actually kinda pissed because I thought it was pretty irresponsible on their part to show up to a major tournament with such a shit team.

    Even Oblitas agrees: http://elcomercio.pe/deporte-total/...aso-segun-juan-carlos-oblitas-noticia-1709347

"En Garcilaso no hay un solo jugador que pueda ir a la selección. Si uno ve el partido de ayer, se da cuenta que tuvo un nivel promedio (el accionar de los celestes)."

Which makes the win all the more amazing.
