Quartas-de-final / Cuartos de final / Quarterfinals 6. Bolívar vs. 14. Lanús 10. Cruzeiro vs. 15. San Lorenzo 5. Defensor Sporting vs. 13. Atlético Nacional 9. Arsenal vs. 16. Nacional-PAR
A few comments... - This is the first time since 2011 only one Brazilian team reached the quarterfinals. - Theoretically, we may see Argentina dominate the semifinals, if Arsenal, San Lorenzo, and Lanús all advance, and we could then perhaps see an all-Argentine final. - If Arsenal and 1 of the 2 other Argentine teams advance, there will be an automatic bracket switch to pair Arsenal with the other Argentina semifinalist. - This is the first time since 2000 that Bolivia is represented in the quarterfinals. That year, Bolívar reached the final 8, losing to América-MEX 2-1 in the second game. - This marks Nacional of Paraguay's first-ever foray into the knockout rounds, and whatever its fate against Arsenal, its passage was historic - a come-from-behind draw at Vélez Sársfield. - Arsenal never made it out of the group stage (and debuted in the Libertadores in 2008). In its first entry into the knockout rounds, it has made it to the quarterfinals, and it now has a serious chance at becoming a semifinalist as its opponent is Nacional of Paraguay - a tough and pesky team but most definitely not a powerhouse; Arsenal will define the series on home ground. - Atl.-Nacional reaches the quarterfinals for the first time since 1995, when it was a finalist and lost the title to Grêmio at home. Since then, it has participated in the tournament a few times, never going beyond the round of 16.
I just realized only 2 of the 8 teams won their groups (Defensor Sporting and Bolivar) all other 6 qualified as second in their groups. Anyone know if that's a record?
These Mexican announcers and their token Argentine are TERRIBLE!! THe ones calling the match between Lanus and BOlivar on Fox Deportes are soooo bad. They're nont even mentioning the game at times and sound bored. Talking instead about wines and museums?Really? The token Argie then starts talking about San Lorenzo going on and on about tickets to Belo Horizante...Why don't we get the Argentine feed like we used to eyars ago? These Mexicans from LA do such a bad job...
Wow....that goal by Bolivar in Argentina vs. Lanus is as clutch as you can get. A much needed goal to tie it 1-1 and to go to La Paz and win the series is awesome!!! The cinderella story continues!!
Seriously. What a goal. And Defensor Sporting with the 0-2 away win in Colombia! However, this was Atl.-Nacional's fourth game in 7 days, with a Colombian league game YESTERDAY, which the team lost 1-0. Had it been a Brazilian team, it would've done all it could to postpone the league match. Atl.-Nacional will need a major miracle in Uruguay next week, but I'm quite confident Defensor and Bolivar are going to be semifinalists. What a Libertadores it has been.
that was a buzzer of a goal. Bolivar looks so lethal when they counter. Only thing I'll disagree with you is I don't consider Bolivar a 'minnow/cinderella' by any means. And while Lanus has been a good team (especially of late years) it surely doesnt have the weight of the traditional Argentine powerhouses.
Except they are. Any Bolivian team is. Even Bolivar. Bolivian Clubs are outfunded by the rest of South American teams by far.
Thanks! I'll take that as a compliment about our club now and how we're perceived...but as Drey put it, we are. A list came out of salaries in total for each club that has participated in the libertadores, and we're 4th from the bottom at 4 million euro total. I think it's pretty crazy how we've done so far given the fact that we're one of the lowest paying teams in the libertadores! And a hell of a goal it was!! Ferreira in past Libertadores always fell short inscoring and transitioning his unstoppable play in Bolivia to internationally. It finally has happened, and the guy is killing it for us anytime you give him space. The stars have aligned for this team finally.
That has to be wrong. 4 million euros would equal about 6.2 million dollars. Divide that by 25-30 players (depending on how many were included in the Libertadores list), and that would make it an average of $200,000-250,000 per player. Those are huge numbers for South America, and those are just the averages, meaning some players earn even more than that number. IF those numbers are correct, I find it very hard to believe that the majority of other South American teams are paying their players more than that. Obviously Mineiro and the other money-fueled clubs are, but the likes of Zamora, Garcilaso, Arsenal, Independiente del Valle, O'Higgins, Anzoategui, etc? Those are still big numbers even for more traditional clubs like Emelec, Universitario, Union Espanola, The Strongest, etc.
Yeah, that doesn't seem right...would you happen to have a link for said article? I couldn't find anything. Regardless, though, I am fairly certain that even Bolivar, Bolivia's most moneyed team, makes much less than the average Libertadores team and thus pays less.
Edit: Nevermind. This is the club's value not salary. Take it as you wish though. I remember a couple of years back Bolivar in '10 was one of the lowest paying clubs with a salary of 3.5 million usd for the overall team. This year though I am sure it's a little over 4 million. I would imagine it's still the same as where they ranked back then. http://depor.pe/futbol-internaciona...estos-son-equipos-mas-valiosos-torneo-1006700
no man, I think that's the year's budget for the club (and I think is closer to $3 mil), but that includes salaries for players, cuerpo tecnico, directivos, and everything that's needed to run the club. BAISA I believe approved $2.5 mil but they always go above, so my guess is closer to $3 mil. If I remember correctly the best paid players are Ferreira and Callejon with $12-15k a month. Most players are well below that tho. However, if we make it to semis Marcelo Claure (president) already said he would bring strong refuerzos, and he would have to improve Ferreira's, Arce, and Capdevila contracts since they're over at the end of june. So that would increase budget considerably...
What is the reputation of the referee for the Lanus - Bolivar game? Dont really understand why Nacional (Col) would play the night before playing against Defensor. Their defense got burned and I was looking for them to win.
I spoke to a Peruvian friend who is a know-it-all in Soccer, and he asked me who the referee was when I told him he was Peruvian, and as soon as I said his name he bursted out: "that ref is horrible! I dont know what he is doing in an international tournment!" Of course that is only one opinion which is hardly a statistical sample, but this guy KNOWS his Peruvian soccer!
this guys know what is libertadores celebration http://comutricolor.com/jugadores-d...braron-victoria-ante-nacional-modelos-paisas/
Nacional de Paraguay, el peor equipo en superar la etapa de grupos, ya eliminó al Arsenal y consiguió su pase a semifinales. Who knew.
