If that's the case then that's yet another reason to fix the schedule of the Libertadores. And either way i'd believe that's not a good reason if i recall correctly the AFC Champions League begins around the same time of the Libertadores, and they hold the draw in December but i think that if by then they federations don't have all the berths assigned they're taken off them and given to somebody else, which i think happened with some club of Indonesia.

Me estaba refiriendo a Colo Colo, precisamente, que hasta hace 4 fechas atrás tenía casi 6 puntos de ventaja y ahora está 3 atrás. :p

En todo caso, a la "U" le pasó lo mismo y antes. :p

It's all interrelated. Conmebol looks like a senior citizen center with all of the old guys they have walking around. They're not willing to give up their hold on power and let some new blood come in.

The British/English have been really busy lately when bringing up allegations of corruption throughout the world. I think they were also the ones that discovered the back room deals made with some African voters. Conmebol publicly stated that they are supporting the Spain/Portugal bid so this should come as no surprise. S.America isn't going to bite the "hand that feeds them" either considering that Banco Santander is a main sponsor.

It seems that FIFA is going to dismiss all of the charges and sweep everything under the rug.

Anybody here knows well the rules of Libertadores Sudamericana?

my question is if Goiás can classify to the Libertadores, considering it has been relegated to 2nd division in the brazilian league.

I heard someone saying that a team in the 2nd division cannot classifiy to the Libertadores, unless its the national champion that year (I guess that would only be possible in leagues with system of promotion/relegation based on average points in the last years.

    Re: Copa Libertadores 2011

They can, in fact they wouldn't be the only one who'd get to play the Libertadores and is in the second division, Jorge Wilstermann got relegated in Bolivia too(under the circumstances you cited). There has been other cases of brazilian clubs that were in the second division and played the Libertadores, remember Paulista FC some years ago, they qualified because they won the brazilian cup. If Goias wins, they'd take Grêmio's spot.

Note how interesting the combinations of results has been between the cups and the league, because if Goias doesn't win the Sudamericana the team that finished 14th(Avai) will qualify to the Sudamericana, meaning that only Flamengo and Atlético Goianiense who finished 15th and 16th are the only ones not involved in either cup qualifying or relegation.

    Re: Copa Libertadores 2011

The rules which now grant the Copa Sul-Americana champion a berth in the following year’s Libertadores have worked against my country’s premiership top finishers.

Corinthians, who finished in 3rd place, will be in the Libertadores next year – in the playoffs. I am confident Corinthians will win and advance to the main tournament. Grêmio, which finished in 4th place, will make it to the Libertadores playoff stage IF Goiás fails to win the Copa Sul-Americana this week. If Goiás takes it, it’s them in the playoffs in early 2011.

In other words, this will be a time that the Porto Alegre people who support Grêmio will adhere to their “gaúcho” culture and support the Argentines of Avellaneda’s Independente against Goiás. Personally, it’d be nice if a small team like Goiás makes it, but given the tradition and the current roster, I’d say Grêmio would be more competitive. A team relegated to the 2nd division in Brazil’s league is probably not going to hack it against the toughest CONMEBOL sides. The current Grêmio will contend.

So if Independente wins the Sul-Americana, and if Brazil's teams win in the playoffs, Brazil will have 6 teams in the 2011 Libertadores:

Internacional - 2010 Copa Libertadores champion
Santos - 2010 Copa do Brasil champion
    Fluminense - 2010 Série A champion
    Cruzeiro - 2010 Série A runner-up
    Corinthians - 2010 Série A 3rd place
    Grêmio - 2010 Série A 4th place

BTW Andres, Estudantes da Prata, Vélez Sarsfield, and Godoy Cruz will represent your country, along with 2010 Clausura winners Argentinos Júniores, and possibly Independente. Of these teams, assuming they maintain their current roster strength, who is the strongest candidate from Argentina going into 2011?

I'd say Vélez, they're the most complete of all them. Estudiantes is fine but they lack of forwards and injuries haven't helped at all. Both Godoy Cruz and Argentinos Juniors have short squads but got to see what they can bring. Godoy Cruz plays well but had troubles to win some matches at home, in fact more likely their away record is better than their home record, Argentinos Juniors had a weak start but improved a lot. Got to see who's the 5th team yet, it could be Independiente, but it could also be Racing, Newell's or Lanús.

Man, the groups are really uneven this season. Group 7 looks like a possible group of death: Corinthians (probably), Cruzeiro, Guaraní and champion of Argentine apertura. Group 3 also really tough.

    Re: Copa Libertadores 2011

Well, so now the 5 argentines are known, though the order of all of them is yet to be definied, this week-end we'll know what's the right order.

    Argentina 1: Argentinos Juniors
    Argentina 2: Estudiantes/Vélez
    Argentina 3: Estudiantes/Vélez/Godoy Cruz
    Argentina 4: Vélez/Godoy Cruz
    Argentina 5: Independiente

The matter is like this, either Estudiantes or Vélez will win the Apertura(Estudiantes has a 2 points adventage here), the champion will be Argentina 2, now on the Libertadores qualifying Estudiantes has an 8 points adventage over Vélez and Godoy Cruz(who are tied), meaning that if the champion is Vélez, they'd be Argentina 2, Estudiantes would be Argentina 3 and Godoy Cruz Argentina 4(regardless of their result). But if Estudiantes is the champion they'll be Argentina 2, and then 3 and 4 will depend on the results of Vélez and Godoy Cruz's matches.

In the qualifying round, Independiente would face either Deportivo Quito or Barcelona.

    Re: Copa Libertadores 2011

The table of the Libertadores is like this:

    1- Estudiantes 82
    2- Vélez 67
    3- Godoy Cruz 65
    4- Argentinos 64
    5- Racing 58

Argentinos is already qualified because they won the Clausura, the winner of the Apertura will be either Estudiantes or Vélez, and the we got the 5th spot for winning the Sudamericana, so in order for Racing to qualify they should've been over Godoy Cruz who's 7 points away, but just one match left, so it's impossible, note that it's possible that Godoy Cruz could go past Vélez if they lose their match and Godoy Cruz win theirs(Which is the only scenario for Godoy Cruz to qualify as Argentina 3).

Remember the Libertadores qualifiying consists of last season's Clausura and the current season's Apertura.

    Well it's definied.

    Argentina 1: Argentinos Juniors
    Argentina 2: Estudiantes
    Argentina 3: Vélez
    Argentina 4: Godoy Cruz
    Argentina 5: Independiente

-Argentinos Juniors will be in Group 3 with, Nacional, Fluminense and América.

-Estudiantes will be in Group 7 with, Guaraní, Cruzeiro and the winner of the series between Colombia 3 and Corinthians.

-Vélez will be in Group 4 with, Caracas, Universidad Católica and the winner of the series between Chile 3 and Bolivar.

-Godoy Cruz will be in Group 8 with, Liga, Peñarol and the winner of the series between Deportivo Quito and Independiente.

-Independiente will play the qualifying round against Deportivo Quito.

Bad(?) news for Godoy Cruz, Omar Asad didn't renew his contract and they're without a coach, a possible replacement might be Jorge Da Silva. This may also mean that Ricardo Gareca may be leaving Vélez, since Asad is always regarded as the natural replacement for Gareca.
