IMO, CONMEBOL refs are head and shoulders above most UEFA refs.

I agree with this. They know how to 'take care' of situations that they can feel the tension get out of hand. I wish MLS and the US had refs that understood that its their job to keep the 'tempo' in control. :(

giving out cards like candy isn't exactly taking care of the situation.

Most refs around the world suck, conmebol is no different

Watch a Champions League match where you have no sympathies one way or another.

Watch a Copa Libertadores match where you have no sympathies one way or another.

Every time you find yourself thinking, "that was not an offside," or "that should have been a foul," or "no way that was a red!" make a note on a notebook.

One exclamation point for a doubtful decision. Two for a bad decision. Three for a horrible, game-changing decision (like giving a wrong penalty or showing a bogus red).

Add up the exclamation points at the end. Repeat for three games. Get an average.

    Come here and tell us.

Erviti just scored a golazo and now Banfield is winning 0-1 @ Cuenca.

And Fernandez just scored the 2-0 in a rebound from a corner. Dreer not having a good game.

    I have. Last 4 UCL games (including today's) = 17 !s = 4.25 per game.

    Last 4 Copa Libertadores games (not including today's) = 11 !s = 2.75 per game.

    PS: Maybe I should use chess notation: ? = bad, ?? = very bad, ??? = horrible; ! = good, !! = very good, !!! = excellent.

In that case, Mendez yellow card was a !!. He dived, and it looked like a penalty at first, but the ref, who was away, was correct in the end.

They're at least equally as bad.

The Chelsea-Barcelona fiasco, the Henry handball and the Bayern goal that was offside by 2 meters today against Fiorentina.

That's 3 absolutely hooooooorrible calls in less than a year.

God knows I'm not a fan of Italian teams or their league after the scandals, but today the penalty in favor of Bayern was very soft (?). But the red to Gobbi (???) was unjustifiable. And the offside (???) in Klose's goal was robbery.

I don't see anything as bad in CONMEBOL games.

Fiorentina got jobbed, plain and simple. Not just the offside, but also the red card while Bayern players were forgiven similar and worse offenses. The penalty I think was ok, but at any rate, the ref was to eager to call it, because if he'd let the play go on it was a goal.

Man! Banfield is kicking ass in Ecuador. I thought Cuenca would be bad this year but they are vastly exceeding my expectations of badness.

Good showing by Banfield, it seems they may have a shot getting out of that group safely. On the other hand Lanús...

For offside, I remember two semi-recent ones: Palermo vs Peru, Buonanotte vs Nacional (PAR)

I think refs are terrible all around the world, there's only a select few in Europe and SA that are good, haven't seen enough of the rest of the world

Last year I remember that Estudiantes had a few questionable calls go their way like the 1-0 victory against a Bolivian side in the group stage which was an offside & a second round win against Libertad.

Refs make awful calls everywhere. I wonder why FIFA doesn't allow any sort of technological advances in the game such as goal line sensors that don't have to dramatically suspend the game for long lengths of time.

Probably because that would make more or less a substantial difference between the levels that have it and the ones that don't, which being the case i agree with such not being allowed.

Anyway, i wonder if Lanús will at least score one goal.

Both were less than a foot offside.

    Today's was over 2 m offside.

    HUGE difference.

There are many refs that aren't using wireless headsets to communicate with their assistants.

Wouldn't that also fall under substantial difference?

I'm against technology that would make the game disruptive. But chip sensors & such have already been introduced only to quickly disappear.
