If Messi would have moved that ball up a few yards, he'd have nailed that penalty.

The Olé newspaper, one of Argentina's main sports publications, is starting a campaign to retain Messi, and encouraging fans to use the hashtag #NoTeVayasLeo (don't go, Leo).

They should simultaneously start a campaign to tell fat Maradonna to shut the f#ck up and piss off.

Sure, but it's one thing to skewer a funny little mexico team quite another to kill the soul of your greatest most hated rival.

Thanks mucho for that video, glennaldo! It gave me chills. Such a long walk from midfield, pressure piling on with every step . . .

You have to play a game with the strategy that works. Chile's strategy isn't new. It was used in the 1970s by the Dutch where their players took turns fouling the other players so they wouldnt get carded too much. So much fouling would make the other teams best players wary on the ball.

My friend from school who self-professed he knows nothing about soccer went to the game because he got tickets somehow. He's an NFL fan so you think the lack of scoring would bother him but the free beer and combo of fouls/drama/atmosphere made him like it. He also told me he can't think of a more nerve wracking event in football than Penalty kicks.

To those who wondered about the beating Alexis Sanchez took.

    Alexis es un macho.

FWIW, what Leo basically said to the journalists is that "in this moment I think it's time to walk away, it was not meant to be, it's been four finals, maybe it'd be for the best, it would please many people out there too..."

There was nothing final about his words.

FWIW, a huge majority doesn't blame him for the loss, they blame Martino, Higuain, and Aguero.

How the heck can you people type in these things so fast? Phones are made for tiny hands dang it.

I believe it's been mentioned before about Pele and Maradona not winning, but here's some more who haven't:

Add Garrincha, Valdano, and Bambam Zamorano.

Actually, the list of "legendary names" from South America who never won the Copa is probably about 30 names long, that is, over 50% of them.

Maradonna is the one who puts pressure on Argentina team and especially poor Messi. "Trophy or don't go home". They should make Javier Mascherano captain, not Messi. That way, Messi feels less pressure to play...

Didn't Mascherano just retire from the national team as well?

As far as I know, unless I'm missing something Messi is the only one that clearly came out and said as much. Then Aguero implied others would do the same but people in the media have just run with it from there. I wouldn't be surprised if Mascherano did though, he's old enough to consider retiring anyway.

There are two parallel campaigns online: one for Messi to stay, and one for Higuain to retire.

Actually, they made a great point in 90 Minutos de Futbol after the final: Maradona was never the main scorer for Argentina. He had the likes of Caniggia, Valdano, Burruchaga to pass the ball to, and those guys would score over half the time.

Messi, on the other hand, has to be the one to score, because Higuain, Aguero, Lavezzi, are going to bottle it 80% of the time (or worse) in actual tournaments.

No, they are not bigoted against themselves. Those Mexican posters are Americans, they hate you because of the team you support and because of cultural differences. I believe you are not allowed to hate them back equally because of their skin color and American heritage.

Now, do you fight for your right to hate them back? Or do you turn the other cheek and say "You hate me because I'm white, that's reverse discrimination. But I will respond with kindness and support Latin immigration." It depends on how you were raised on whether you turn the cheek and kill em with kindness. And understand why reverse discrimination exists in America.

The quote is from John Cena, btw, when he faced Oscar Gutieres.

Looks like some people here need to learn sociology...
What has Brasil and Italy offered them. Very strange post, you're saying that those colors aren't hers because she is brown, and that there are some dark people who don't integrate and believe in this country. All people of color integrate and believe in this country. They may not integrate into white society or believe in white supremacy, but that is different than being part of this country and believing in it.

While I agree with you that those aren't her colors (not yours either, they aren't Brasil Italy), you insulted her by basically branding her as an outsider trying to fit in. I do agree that she is an outsider and many would call her a sellout, but your post would hurt her feelings. She'd rather you say it was her team and her win and her colors.
They don't, they shit on things white-us related. They'll never mock Motown, NY mosques or themselves.

We are getting on a bit age-wise... and we have to qualify first. Yes it might seem as a done deal for US fans that don't regularly watch S.American teams and have only looked at cup performances, but qualies down here are hell. Ecuador is twice as strong in the altitude of Quito... Uruguay played below their level without Suarez, they are still an incredibly dangerous side, Brazil might recover form with their new manager Tite, etc, etc, etc. Chile still has to play Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and Paraguay away from home... it's tough as hell but also incredibly entertaining and strong competition makes our teams better.

IF we qualify and IF we get seeded, I think Chile can make a deep run in 2018. But, as I said, we need to qualify first.
