It wasn't going to go out of bounds. It was in the middle of the pitch and he'd tried to do it multiple times.

Don't do something stupid multiple times and then complain.

Ofcourse, we all know the host nation will get the favorable calls and nudged in the right direction. My point is, South Korea was the most blatant I have personally witnessed.

The only ridiculous thing about Caniggia's yellow card was the stupidity of the player in commiting such a daft offence...

The shame was that the final could have been a far better showpiece, and most likely would have been, had Caniggia not been suspended. He was their most potent threat in most matches in 1990, his pace was electric - the occasional flash of Maradona magic aside.

Exactly but that was the point of the card, make sure West Germany had it as easy as they could. And that includes one of the softest penalties ever called in a WC match.

This story is only believed in Argentina bro. The rest of the world disagrees. The crowding of the ref after the foul was just ridiculous.

Don't see a clear foul on any video I've see. Funny how quickly the ref whistled it when even after replays it's not clear.

You are maybe right that the referee was looking for an excuse all along. That might be in an unconscious way true. Ghost penalties, eavesdropping opponents, dirty press stories, sending opponents team staff home, ruining the 1982 World Cup draw, escaping second yellows, unpunished karate kicks, letting your own referees officiate the other semi final, pitch flooding, hotel swaps etc. are no unfamiliar territory for West Germany.

But you shouldn't give him an easy excuse, assuming that he might be looking for one. Caniggia tried to do it multiple times, and was warned by his own team mates. This was in particular stupid considering that Argentina is no naive purist rookie in international football. They sit right in the middle of the engine room that keeps the ship moving forward.

Let the referee search for a better and more useful pretext (might even be unconscious to him), if he is looking for one.

Yeah I agree Caniggia was very stupid in pulling the ball with his hand, one of the biggest, if not the biggest, mistake for Argentina in a WC.
