It has nothing to do with English. "Bloke" is a radikal way of writing "bloque".

I know, I know  Very silly joke.

[IMG] High drama in the Colombian quarter-final, where América de Cali led 1-0, but were staring defeat in the face, before a goalkeeping error let young Linda Caicedo score a vital equalizer. Catalina Usme struck the winning goal:

    América de Cali (red) 2 - 2 Atlético Nacional - agg. 3-2

    Other QF videos:
    Atlético Huila 2 - 0 Junior - agg 5-1

    Independiente Medellín 3 - 1 Cortuluá - agg. 3-1

    Santa Fe 1 - 3 Millonarios on penalties - agg 2-2

[IMG] Argentina: Before the team's respectable World Cup campaign, the federation announced that the 2019/20 season would be professional.

The new season kicks off on Sunday (15 Sep). Two squads signing on the dotted line in Buenos Aires province - Boca Juniors and Racing Club:

The champions of 2018/19 were UAI Urquiza, who won the 8-team championship group in the season's second half. It came down to a championship decider, River Plate (32pts) at home to UAI (34pts, ultimately 37). Boca got a draw to finish as runners-up on goal difference.

Brazil: The Brasileirão finalists are Corinthians and Ferroviária, after they won their semi-finals in differing circumstances. Corinthians knocked out Flamengo in São Paulo https://www.bigsoccer.com/posts/38160479

Ferroviária haven't been impressive, going from a 7th-place finish to the final largely on their skill in penalty shootouts. On Saturday they were outplayed by Kindermann, but equalized late with Simeia's goal, and GK Luciana made 2 saves in the shootout.

    Semifinal 2: Kindermann 1 - 1 (p) Ferroviária highlights / Full match
    Semifinal 2: Corinthians 2 - 0 Flamengo highlights / Full match

Brazil's most interesting story of the weekend was the Paulista state semi-final. São Paulo FC, recently crowned Brazilian division 2 champions, won their 1st leg v Santos, 3-2, and the underdogs looked as strong as their decorated opponents. They clearly have a bright future, but will they reach the final?

São Paulo scored through Valeria (13 mins), but Santos looked safe at 2-1 with a headed goal by Glaucia (78 mins).
In the last few minutes, it all changed, see the video:

[IMG] Colombia: We've reached the last two teams of the season 2019 – the champions of Colombia and South America are out in the semi-finals, humbled 5-1 on aggregate by Independiente Medellín:

Maybe América de Cali were fated to reach the final, but in the semi they beat the new Millonarios team 3-2 on aggregate. Two goals by Farlyn Caicedo in the 1st leg:

Millonarios vs. América (0-2) | Liga Femenina 2019 | Semifinal ida
    - www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7wg2IexCqI

In the 2nd leg, another Catalina Usme free-kick goal was enough, despite the best efforts of Millonarios' Mariana Pion and Karen Páez:

Unlike the 10am semi-finals, the final will be evening kickoffs for América v Medellín on Tue 24 Sep, and the return leg on Mon 30 Sep.

The post above reminded me to check on how the 2019 CLF is shaping up... and apparently, during the gap of posts during the WWC, C'BOL expanded the tournament! It's now 16 teams instead of 12, with the four new berths going to the four strongest nations historically (BRA, CHI, COL, PAR). COL, with the defending champion spot, will have three total nations in the 16-team field; the hosts are Ecuador(!) so they'll get a second spot as well.

No one has posted about Chile in a long time, and we also missed something big there... Colo-Colo didn't win in 2018! They didn't even make the final  However, when the expansion was announced, CHI didn't just award the extra spot to the 2018 runners-up Palestino: considering how good Colo-Colo has historically been in the CLF, they had Palestino and Colo-Colo do a play-off for the second spot, and Colo-Colo won it.

The official draw hasn't happened yet since it won't occur until next week. ECU (discussed above) and COL are the two nations that don't have their two berths each decided yet. All four "new" berths are in Pot 4, while looks weird by eye since they're from the 4 strongest nations, but I guess it doesn't matter which pot they're in as long as they're in the same pot.

The expansion to 16 teams means we'll actually have a QF round this year - two teams from each group advancing - so that's exciting. :)

Public unrest on the streets of Quito, Equador. State of Emergency exist and government was moved out of the capital to Guayaquil. Start of Copa Libertadores Femenina (11th Oct) is rather doubtful in such conditions.(FIFA surely remembers interrupted and abandoned youth tourney in Nicaragua from last year)

FEF CONMEBOL - CONMEBOL LIBERTADORES FEMENINA ECUADOR 2019 COMMUNICATED The Local Organizing Committee of the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores Femenina Ecuador 2019, according to circular DCC 260/2019 sent by CONMEBOL on Monday, October 8 of this year, informed all delegates, Press and general public that meetings have been held with CONMEBOL authorities, security delegates and members of the National Police to ensure the logistics of arrival of international delegations. At the moment they have arrived 80% to the city of Quito and are staying in their respective hotels. However, the FEF and the Local Organizing Committee are constantly monitoring the situation so that the tournament starts with the necessary guarantees and security. Guayaquil, October 9, 2019 f FEFecuador

uh...guarantees of what exactly? o_O... ie. that even in case of really bad luck the angry mob will never attack the team bus on it's way into stadium or even better that they will hide all their fire bombs and stones and in turn start to cheer the passing team and wave their flags of support?

"You can't guarantee anything in football. All you can guarantee is disappointment." - wise words from Graeme Souness

The stuff in Ecuador today is terrifying, but it has mainly been between the protesters and government. Conmebol are hoping (and we're all praying) that won't affect the players at all. They're training together in Quito.

The Libertadores tournament will start as scheduled, on Friday night – but likely without fans permitted in the stadiums, say the tournament previews, on Expreso.ec (Archive) and EFE (Archive)

Day 1: Fri 11 Oct, in group A and B. (Ecuador time = North American CT)

Atlético Huila [IMG] v [IMG] Peñarol
    Deportivo Cuenca [IMG]
    v [IMG] Estudiantes de Caracas

    19:30 ECT / 00:30 GMT
Cerro Porteño [IMG] v [IMG] Colo-Colo
    Mundo Futuro [IMG]
    v [IMG] Ferroviária

The club with the best name, Mundo Futuro, won the Bolivian cup final v San Martín de Porres, in a year when some clubs went professional (possibly).

It's difficult to imagine a more low-key Libertadores than the 2018 women's edition, but 2019 might be. Conmebol is no stranger to street clashes, after the awful scenes at the Libertadores men's final.

If I had to judge right now, Group A looks like the Group of Death - two past champions and no debutantes. Conversely, Group B looks like the Group of Life - only one previous champion, two debutantes, and the fourth team has a pretty poor CLF record. Groups C and D both seem to have two clear teams to advance, though the Colombian team in either group could cause a surprise.

^ Disregard, that's an unofficial account. Conmebol's official page has almost no updates either.

[IMG] The first Libertadores goal is by Uruguay's champions Peñarol, Jemina Rolfo scoring (28'). But the tournament's defending champions Huila from Colombia have recovered, and Huila lead 2-1 at half-time. These are the lineups:

Huila: Lisbeth Castro; Leivis Ramos, Nubiluz Rangel, Carmen Rodallega, Carolina Arias; Daniela Caracas, Carolina Arbeláez, Jessica Peña, Fany Gauto, Marcela Restrepo; Ivonne Chacón. - Entrenador: Albeiro Erazo.
Peñarol: Sofía Olivera; Idanis Mendoza, Daiana Farías, Paula Viera; Florencia Vicente, Agustina Arámbulo, Jemina Rolfo, Ximena Velazco, Lorena Graña, Stefany Suárez, Lourdes Viana. - Entrenador: Daniel Pérez.

[IMG][IMG] The other game, the line-ups for Cuenca v Estudiantes Caracas - 0-0 at half-time.

Have they ever moved a Libertadores tournament? I suspect it's Ecuador or bust, they'll just cancel it. If it were the men's, then Conmebol would use all its resources and move it to Madrid again

The protests have been frantic in Quito on Saturday, there was no way football could go ahead. The tournament has a few rest days between the groups/QF/SF and final on 27 Oct, but losing them is a problem. They could make it a straight knockout cup, or cancel it.

UAI announced they were doing fine and were safe. We should be conscious that we don't really know the general situation in Quito. "The city is on fire" isn't a helpful view. Latin America gets so many stereotypes about how violent it is (usually from the country that passed the "2nd amendment") or just dumb racist lies
