    (hint, hint)

I'm really happy for Brad, but I wonder about Villa's plans. Is a UEFA cup team that finished 6th in the Premiership last season really planning to hand the keys to the goal posts over to a young keeper with no European experience? Tim Howard's success story with Man Utd. is certainly a good defense for Guzan, but I really would not be at all surprised if Villa brought in another, more experienced Premiership keeper, at least to give them options in goal.

    They have to.

I don't think they can go into the season with Guzan and Stuart Taylor as the options. Not for a team with UEFA Cup aspirations. We'll probably see Paul Robinson, Carson, or (as the rumor mill suggests) Ben Foster on loan.

Is Guzan ready to start right away in the premiership? Who knows.
It would be quite a risk to take..............

By the way, the news has hit the BBC.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/7503296.stm

Interestingly, the report the news as "Villa has agreed a fee for Guzan" and not "Villa sign Guzan." One wonders if this still has to go thru the home office.

Apparently there have been Guzan sightings at Villa Park this morning...

The rest of the team is in Zurich so I don't know if they would try for the Work Permit today or wait until Monday...

Guzan is better than Carson and Foster right now. Not after some magical year sitting on the bench learning behind inferior player. If Villa don't talk themselves into throwing lots more money into the keeper position when they have lots of holes elsewhere this could be one of the transfer buys of the year.

For anyone too lazy to go to those boards... it seems like Brad Guzan is the fans' 4-5 choice keeper behind the likes of Carson, Green, and BF. However, there don't seem to be too many complaints about him, except for when people post videos of his howlers.

They'll probably get someone else for 08-09 but it's good for Brad to get in the pre-season with the club.

Who knows, by the time the season rolls in, he may be ready for more than Carling Cup action.

Now back to the regularly scheduled discussion - screw you, Favre.

That's an interesting question. I'd bet that the club applying for a WP would spin it however worked in their favor. Guy played? Count 'em! Guy didn't play? It shouldn't count because his club wasn't required to release him.

There's still speculation in the English press that Villa want to sign Friedel as well.

I don't think Villa can go into next season with just Guzan and Stuart Taylor. Not for a team that wants to compete for European football. That's awfully risky.

Every day here there are rumors of Fridel leaving Blackburn for another club. It sounds silly, but where there's smoke there must be some sort of fire.

    Villa Hopeful Of Guzan Decision

Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill is ‘very hopeful’ that Brad Guzan will be allowed to join the club from Chivas USA.

    ....

The two clubs have reportedly fixed a price for the player and O‘Neill is expecting a positive outcome from the tribunal.

He told Aston Villa’s official website: "As everyone knows we chased him last January and were hopeful at the tribunal for the work permit and it was narrowly defeated.

"Since then he has played quite a number of games for the USA - not only in friendly matches but also in competitive games by playing a couple of matches in the World Cup. His position would have improved immensely - so we are very hopeful."

    ....

Obviously he means world cup qualifying.

He'll get it this time. Surely Villa already know they've got a near certain chance of getting the permit his time, or they wouln't have gone thru this whole process again. Surely........

Thanks, honey, but I have a headache but you put on something pretty and maybe I'll get in the mood.

Oh, and Villa (and ManCity) is still chasing Friedel.

Villa did sign Sidwell but Barry hasnt been sold yet. Now, Arsenal may be interested - do you hear this John Harkes? - as well.

Villa probably has to sell a little in order to buy.

Re: Guzan sold to Aston Villa (Sideline Views)

I've been going through the same thought process. But here's my rationale for why I think everything will be okay: I've read that teams can only appeal for work permits once per season, so if Villa fails again, they're S.O.L until July 1st, 2009. By that time, Guzan will have become a free agent and presumably signed with someone else.

They must have confidence that they'll get him this time around...otherwise perhaps they'd wait until January once he's had a chance to earn a few more caps in WCQ or friendlies?

What happened to all the money Randy Lerner promised them for transfers?

They shouldn't need to sell in order to buy.......

There is one area where Guzan is definitely a-head of Seitz in the race to be the US #1. I'll give you two guesses; but you're only going to need one. Based on recent history all of our best keepers have that in common.

OTOH, I've always thought of Guzan as being Kasey Keller to Seitz's Brad Friedel.

But Tim Howard is just Tim Howard.:)

Re: Guzan sold to Aston Villa (Sideline Views)

They seem to have a very thin roster, as they did last year.

If they get Barry-for-Finnan + $30M swap, at least they'll get a serviceable right fullback.

Last season, O'Neill had to do with Mellberg, a central defender by specialty, at the spot.

So either Lerner is cheap or O'Neill is frugal ... or both.

You'd think the market would be afloat with Villa rumors but it's not much aside of Friedel (and of Eidur Gudjohnsen refusing to go to Birmingham).

Seitz sort of needs the opposite of the hair club for men.

Re: Guzan sold to Aston Villa (Sideline Views)

Here's what I don't get. As I understand it, AV paid a transfer fee just to get Guzan now instead of in January. But if they also had plans to get Friedel, why didn't they just sign Guzan to a pre-contract on July 1 and save the transfer money? I mean, yeah, that fee isn't going to bust their budget, but it's pretty much wasted money.

Someone's got to back up Big Brad and they clearly think Stuart Taylor isn't the man to do it.

    Bingo.

Personally, I don't think there's any way Guzan goes into this season as the starter. That's awfully risky for a club with European ambitions.
