Columbus Crew SC vs Philadelphia Union 2008 MLS CUP CELEBRATION Oh, dear me-bus, I miss the 2008 team and the sweet, sweet feeling of winning trophies. Please, Guillermo, lend us your strength and show us the way to MLS Cup. Amen. And now, for the main event... Sapong - 4 Previous Meeting: May 9, 2018 @ MAPFRE Stadium Columbus Crew SC 1, Philadelphia Union 0 Notes: It's a busy week for the Union. They hosted (and outperformed, using a B squad!!) a very good SKC team on Sunday. They travel to Houston for THE CUP Final on Wednesday night (pray for extra time and penalties). Then, on Saturday, it's off to Columbus for a huge match that could massively influence playoff positioning. A loss will hurt, and it may keep us out of fourth. A tie isn't great but Philly will be under more pressure, especially considering their remaining schedule. A win could see us level on points with NYALPHABET for third place (depending on the match against Chicago on Wednesday). So, you know, JUST WIN, BABY! Discuss.
We catch a break with Philly going to the USOC Final midweek. They are playing really well. We have been getting results at home but still seem in 2nd gear. Looking for non-Zardes production on offense and 3G still searching for Mensah's partner on D. Still, I think we are up 1 in a hard fought affair & get an insurance goal late. A winger scores!
Honestly, I'm not feeling great about this one. Philly is flying high right now, and we've been less than stellar. Now, if we play our best soccer, I think we take them easy, but how often have we seen that this season? Nope, nope, nope. Not feeling it.
We have to win, I can't take a week of @hangthadj gloating about his warnings that Philly might catch us. We need the 6 point game here!!!
Crewster forecast updated through the weekend: EAST Atlanta 69 NYRB 65 NYC 56 Columbus 53 Philadelphia 52 DC 50 Montreal 46 New England 41 Toronto 39 Chicago 34 Orlando 31 WEST Kansas City 60 Dallas 59 LAFC 56 Seattle 53 Portland 53 Salt Lake 51 LA Galaxy 47 Vancouver 46 Minnesota 42 Houston 38 Colorado 30 San Jose 26
As I said elsewhere, this game lined up perfectly for us in the schedule. The Union will be playing their third game in seven days. Beyond that they will be coming off a US Open Cup hangover, regardless of whether they win or lose on Wednesday. Despite the Union having advantage in the coaching box with tactical genius Jim Curtin leading the way, this is 3 points for the Crew. This one has the @hangthadj guarantee.
OK, I just bought my tickets in sec 104. I'll be the guy in Crew gear standing with a guy in Union gear. I'm really amped about this match--the most important one of the season to date! The weather looks perfect, too. And, for the first time since moving back to Ohio 4 years ago, I'll be staying in Columbus and not driving back to NE Ohio...so I'm not going to be driving. Watch out, MAPFRE!
Also, I'd appreciate help for scheduling my friend from Philly, who is flying in for his first away match. I think his plane arrives at 9am and I won't be down to Columbus until about 3pm after my kids' soccer matches. Where should I send him for breakfast/lunch/midday? I'm sure he'd want to watch Liverpool-Chelsea. Is there a sure thing for that, with food? Short North? Any of you want to watch that match with a great brit / educator/ Union fan / Liverpool fan / music aficionado? Should I take him to the tailgate before/after dinner? Land Grant? Old Skool? O'Reilly's? It's been a minute since I've lived in Columbus... I welcome all itinerary suggestions!
Fado at Easton will have the game and is close to the airport. Will he be schlepping luggage or dropping off at a hotel prior? I'm pretty sure Endeavor (formerly Zauber) in Grandview shows the matches. McClellan's Pub on Sawmill is the Liverpool bar. I can endorse O'Reillys. Old Skool is fine and forgettable, though I've never eaten there. The same people that do local cantina. The Crest has a million beers and a good food menu. Or you can go to Lineage Brewing instead. Their food menu isn't extensive but the savory pies are great.
Reposting here becuasee @Ch(Elsey) posted to the wrong thread: I'm stoked to be at the match! Sorry to miss GBS, Moreno, Gaven, O'Rourke, and Marshall. They were all key pieces of that glorious 2008 squad.
I have been railing on this celebration for months in that thread. Glad you get to be at the event that celebrates the MLS Champions even though will not be in attendance. I have been meaning to message you - Are you going to the tailgate? With kids?
I'm hoping to make the tailgate--but no kids at this one for two reasons. 1) My childhood friend Gary, who I've only seen twice in the last 10 years, is flying in for the match from Philadelphia. He's not bringing his kid, so I'm looking forward to some adult conversation/catching up. Gary's largely responsible for getting me into soccer 25 years ago when we were middle schoolers in Wilmington, DE. We bonded over music and technology, and then he infected me with this sport. 2) My kids' cousin-siblings (each of my wife's sister's kids are within 2-months of my kids' ages) are spending Friday night at our place. They're going to be in no shape to make the trip (without a massive meltdown). I'd rather avoid that, especially since Gary will be in town.
I’m surprised “the Crew” got that many people to agree to come, considering those coming must have heard “the word on the street” of the reunion Kyle Martino tweeted about. LOL
Pretty sure I went to every home game in 2008 but I have no idea who Andrew Peterson is. I'm wondering if there are other players and maybe even Sigi wondering who the hell he is.
I actually have one of his game jerseys (garage sale) because he was #13, as I recall (my number as a player). He got into two games with the Crew--one start in 2008.
