Now it's Clint Dempsey vs Landon Donovan who will be the candidate for the USMNT best player ever played for USA...We'll never forget their contribution and sacrifices...
I've always been pretty firmly on team Landon for greatest ever. But I do think longevity matters in such comparisons and Donovan retired too early while Dempsey is hanging on and still being a leader out there. If he can come up with a big goal or two in Russia, it may be time in my estimation to revive the argument. I still think at both of their peaks, I'll take Landon over Clint if we're choosing teams, but all-time greatest is more than who was the best on their best day for me. And every time Clint comes up big for the US, things get less and less clear cut.
I don't see why they always have to be pitted against one another in the first place. It's not like U.S. soccer has been constantly swimming in bright spots in its history, so the need to build just one of them up is a bit weird.
The weird thing to me is a thread that is about appreciating one player is filled with comments about another player. That is the real head scratcher to me.
I don't like when people tear one down to prop up the other. But, if you start discussing greatest ever players, comparisons are inevitable.
Yeah, CD is making it a really interesting argument; I don't see him slowing down. If he gets the WC goals record, which I think is very possible, it makes things even more interesting.
To be fair, Landon should have been startintg last World Cup. Would probably have 6 or 7 goals. Landon would have around 70 goals overall. This such a silly argument to me. But that's what makes sports fun. People have different opinions.
If Landon could pass to himself he'd have 100g/100a. Dempsey is a great player, and he's been a huge part of the team. But his interest in this record is hilariously petty and stupid.
Dempsey said in an interview that he felt like he already broke the record because he did it in less games. It was kind of weird. But whatever. Good for him.
These guys are competitive. You could tell by LDs reaction during the game that he wanted the record. I don't fault either of them.
now that is a tad awkward, but gotta give it to ole Dempsey. he's 34 and a year removed from something that could have killed him.
Just logged in to say thanks for never being afraid to try sh!t Clint Dempsey! Congrats on a great career
