Carlos Dos Santos (CJ), goalkeeper. '00 #usynt GK CJ Dos Santos has joined SL Benfica Academy. Dos Santos was stellar for the Philadelphia Union U14-U16 the last two seasons.— Joey (@USAprospects) August 26, 2016 He has USYNT caps: http://www.ussoccer.com/players/2015/06/04/16/15/carlos-dos-santos#tab-1 Someone has gone to the trouble of putting together a bio on him: http://www.ussoccer.com/players/2015/06/04/16/15/carlos-dos-santos#tab-1 Mother is Portuguese. Father is Cape Verdean, born in Portugal. Comes out of the Philadelphia Union Academy.
He's been called up to Bethlehem Steel to sit on the bench once or twice. Doesn't mean much, other than Philly seemed to like him as a U16 and wanted to give him a sense of the pro level.
Made his Benfica U-17 starting debut yesterday in the Benfica-hosted Youth Cup, a 5-2 win over Aalborg BK from Denmark. Via his Twitter feed, he has also trained with Benfica B (the reserve team, in Liga Pro) twice this month. http://www.slbenfica.pt/30/news/info/bhYgEKidp0eWpUdYTXJDdA Hard work in the past, present, and future! Listen to my first interview. Thank you to @BenficaPodcast for allowing me to share my story from #Philadelphia @ussoccer_ynt @SLBenfica https://t.co/LI7pKZVfiC— CJ dos Santos (@cj_dos_santos) July 12, 2017 He was born in Cape Verde and raised in the US. A fan of Benfica almost since birth with the influence of his father and grandfather. Has been with Fox Chase Soccer Club, Philadelphia Soccer Club, FC DELCO, Philadelphia Union, and SL Benfica in that order. And the US U14s, U15s, and U17s. Had initial struggles with the Portuguese language but took classes and got help from the Benfica players and coaches to improve. Has played with both the U19s (Juniores) and U17s (Juvenis) of Benfica, and expects to be with the Juniores full-time this upcoming season, perhaps with an outside shot at Benfica's B team. Speaks highly of Benfica's organization, and the sacrifices and support he's received from his family. Hopes to make the U17 WC squad. He made one start during the U17 WC qualifiers, and thus is provisionally cap-tied to the US.
It was great to meet @keaton_parks today. Another 🇺🇸 in the @SLBenfica ⚽️ family. Let's make history 👊🏽— CJ dos Santos (@cj_dos_santos) July 25, 2017
Back with the U17s for the first time since the CONCACAF Championship. He's very likely to make the World Cup squad. http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/201...for-vaclav-jezek-tournament-in-czech-republic GOALKEEPERS (2): Carlos Joaquim Dos Santos (S.L. He's his Benfica age group's 3rd keeper. There are some players in the '99 age group in the team, and the starter is a '99, but the back up is a '00. http://www.zerozero.pt/equipa.php?id=6444
Named to the final US roster for the U17 World Cup, where he will likely serve as backup to Garces. http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/2017/09/21/16/40/20170921-news-u17mnt-world-cup-roster-release GOALKEEPERS (3): Alex Budnik (Sockers FC; Arlington Heights, Ill.), Carlos Joaquim Dos Santos (S.L. His team won the youth championship. CJ played a game for Juniores SL on June 2nd. Here's the highlights where you can see him a few times. I think he's too old to play Benfica's U17s so I assume U19 is his next step.
Second day of training w/ @slbenfica U23 🇵🇹🔴⚪️. Maybe @zlatan_but_a_car will know?
Last year that was the case (kind of... all of the B Teams in the 2nd division play under Olympic rules, so they're allowed 3 players over 23), but this is the first year of the Portuguese u23 Championship. As that article mentions, Sporting is pulling their team out of the 2nd division, and Porto is apparently mulling it over, but from what I can tell Benfica will have both a B team and a u23 team this year.
https://www.slbenfica.pt/pt-pt/agor...benfica-juniores-jogo-treino-caldas-pre-epoca The Benfica site says "Carlos Santos" started in a friendly today for the Juniores, which I believe is the u19 team. I wonder if they'll have him bouncing between the u23s and u19s.
