Not sure we needed an entire thread just to say he's bad, but I'm all in for it. He's bad. End of analysis.
I think he knows this, and I feel sorry for him. It is not his doing - it’s a cynical ploy by the team to capture some vestige of interest from the press and fans during an otherwise humiliating run. Wondo bleeds black and blue and it can’t be fun knowing that is the only he’s out there.
Wondo need to be a leader and tell the coach to play him as a sub and let the next generation play the minutes.
I don't think Almeyda likes Hoesen or any other forward on the team. Wondo is probably showing more in training and that's why he is starting him.
Wondo seems a step slower and not able to turn as quickly... yesterday I saw him pass up a couple of shots after turning in the 18 that I think would have been shots last year. That being said, it's hard to judge since we're so awful everywhere else and there haven't been any service. I don't think this new systems suits him, even if it was working. I do think it fits Hoesen though.
Wondo Hoesen Espinosa Tommy Calvillo Luis Felipe LaCroix Kashia Flo Lima JT Let’s give this a shot from the start?
I know it’s blasphemy to say it. Trade him to Houston (or any team that might make the playoffs), let him come off the bench there and break the record. He retires. Statue goes up outside Avaya in 2020. Quakes pay him to be a special advisor to team (this is to make up fore the years he was way underpaid, though part of that is his fault for not having an agent) It’s obvious the FO is promoting the hell out of Wondo Watch”, but Its only tarnishes his reputation to stay. Let’s say he scored in the final minute of yesterday’s game. Would it be appropriate to celebrate when everything around this team is in shambles. Locker room moral has to be lower than last season. He derserved better.
Wondo getting the ball in the box less than before... Also being played as the target striker has only ever worked for him when LD was playing CAM underneath him for the nats. The only player who has that style and quality in this league is Darwin Quintero, who we didn't buy.
Game 4: 3-0 win over Portland Wondo: 0 minutes The Quakes had 19 shots, 13 on target. The Quakes had their first points, first win, first game with multiple goals, first clean sheet, first non-embarrassing performance, first game where they didn't look like they were playing with ten men... Wondo's replacement, Danny Hoesen: 90 minutes, 1 G, 0 A, 5 shots, 4 SOG, 1 key pass
Hoesen didn't even have a very good game, and yet in one start he did more than Wondo has all season... Wondo in 4 starts: 360 minutes, 0 G, 0 A, 5 shots, 0 SOG, 1 key pass Hoesen in 1 start: 90 minutes, 1 G, 0 A, 5 shots, 4 SOG, 1 key pass
Gentlemen, this is not quite a fair analysis. One could just as easily point to Yueill and Salinas replacing Vako and Judson, and the new formation putting Godoy into a defensive rather than offensive role. No striker will score without service, and that is the big difference we say last night. Oh, and Portland also suck.
Thanks for doing this xbhaskarx. Understanding that it was a different opponent and game, etc., still notable how all of Danny's touches were in the offensive half. And how he was able to get on the ball not just in the middle but on both sides as well. It didn't seem like were getting pressed as much as in the first game, and maybe the midfield changes helped in getting the ball forward faster as well. But, still is very clear that for our system to work we need someone with more speed than Wondo up top. Looks, at least for now, like Wondo's best role will be in subbing in for eithher Danny or Magnus (game dependent).
That may be true, but the fact that Hoesen's shots were on frame does speak volumes. It's also true that seeing Wondo on the bench may have gotten across to the other players that if they don't produce, they won't play. A message that should have been sent weeks ago.
Good points. To be clear I am not arguing that Wondo should start over Hoesen. Just wanted to point out that there were a number of changes. I am happy to see the team play a more positive style of soccer. When a team plays negatively any striker would have to dip further back to "find the game." Personally I would like to see Hoesen and Wondo partner. Both have had great games with a more direct partnership.
Almeyda's system requires a single striker, like it or not. Since he's made it clear he won't change his system, the decision is going to have to be made.
Wondo is probably not done yet. He will probably play part time this year but come October /November, he and the club will have to make a decision on his future. That is only 6 months from now so I think this is his last season with the club as a full timer They could make him a player coach though but I don't see the club shelling out $500-$800k for him next season.
Now firmly ahead of Ralston yet still back of Stahre in coaching ranks. Using data to diss Wondo can be played with the Savior Skipper, too.
