Essentially, yes. Dallas wanted to sign Richards, but you have to play in the academy of the MLS team for a full year before being eligible. However, because there was competing interest from Europe for Richards (remember that Cory Gibbs brough Richards around to other places in Germany, Schalke included), MLS made an exception where FCD could sign Richards early, but he would still have to complete his full year with Dallas before being eligible to play in MLS. Of course, Dallas felt that the U19s for another semester would've been silly for Richards, so they sent him to Bayern under their new agreement.
Well, maybe. It also might be the third highest for an American out of MLS this week, depending on when this deal and the Steffen deal officially happen, and how much the Adams deal was for.
The EPB situation and the Richards situation have a lot in common SKC & FCD sent EPB & Richards on loan to big Euro clubs with options to buy. Both played well on loan. Porto did not exercise its option, Bayern did. The key difference is that EPB was nearing the end of his contract after the Porto loan. When Porto walked, there wasn’t much SKC could do
Note...…………………FCD owner asked about this at the USL press conference today. Dan Hunt says adamantly that Richards has not been sold.— 3rd Degree (@3rdDegreeNet) December 6, 2018
I do think this is a great advertisement for the domestic scouting and recruiting model really working. In the matter of only a couple of seasons Richards went from Birmingham United in Alabama to the Houston Texans in the DA to an MLS DA at FC Dallas to Bayern Munich (potentially). There's a real story to tell there regarding how the system "should" work.
Oh, I forgot about Sanchez. That was back when teams raked in 3/4 of the profits for academy signings.
I guess economically it makes sense for FCD/MLS - basically free money - but I think it's a steal for Bayern. and its amazing for the player.... I don't think FCD can or should push much more for more money but its more of steal that both sides can be happy about. that said, if it had been 2 or 3 or 4 mil i wouldn't have been shocked, either.
Bayern U19s lost 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim. Sounds like Bayern were the better side and Chris Richards had a couple scoring chances, but couldn't convert. Dominating but not scoring enough has been a theme for the Bayern U19s in UEFA Youth League. https://t.co/1iHLt5lwE9— scuffed (@scuffedpod) December 8, 2018
??? EPB was on a loan with a buy clause. The club declined to exercise the buy option. Am I missing something?
I thought the price was set in the loan agreement. After the loan they decided he wasn't worth that price.
Good grief. Porto tried to "negotiate" ex post facto. KC said FU. But really -- and it makes me sad that people here don't remember this -- the relevancy is when KC turned down 1mil from Juve when EPB was 17.

Not final yet. Dec. 6th tweet from 3rd Degree a few posts above stated that Dan Hunt was "adamant" that Richards has not been sold to Bayern.
IIRC, the rumor in the EPB thread at the time was that Porto was having financial issues and couldn’t afford the initial $1 mil fee

Looks like there's a decent chance Richards will be recalled by FC Dallas after his loan ends. The "he" in the tweet by 3rd Degree is referring to owner Dan Hunt: Yes, he said it to a couple reporters. "Richards is part of our plan going forward." He was quite firm about it.— 3rd Degree (@3rdDegreeNet) December 12, 2018
