I think a good portion of the civic South has been giving a f#ck you to Yankees, the Feds & black people since they lost. Every once in a while the Southern powers-that-be (now old crusty white Republicans but it was Democrats for a long time) have to be reminded - and we know this is difficult to swallow like grits are - that y'all were slave-labor-luvin traitors to the Union and no, that's not something to be celebrated and landmarked and called your "heritage." At least not in the 21st century.

 

This article is originally from WaPo, not an alt-right group. It's about lefties instigating the violence at right-sponsored marches. I don't think that's a good look for the left; better to be on the moral high ground, as with the (extremely peaceful) Women's March, than to have this be a battle of my aggressive young males who get off on kicking people vs. your aggressive young males who get off on kicking people.

If this was all there was to the statue worship it wouldn't be that important. The statues were only a part of an effort to to whitewash southern history and destroy Reconstruction and end any rights for blacks there. Coincidentally there is a confederate general who served with Lee at Gettysburg who has been deleted from the iconography because he served as governor of Virginia in the 1880's voted in on a coalition of black & white voters. They had the audacity to raise taxes and to use it on things like public schooling. On of you here who are more learned than I or better google-fu skills can find more details.

 

You are more to the point than I. The erasing of Mahone may have been coincidental but that is just a pretty strong coincidence. I have been on other website where posters state that this (statues) are nothing more than honoring heritage. Having said that I haven't seen anyone argue successfully why Mahone has almost no statues compared to lesser-ranked officers such as a JEB Stuart, PT Beauregard or a John Hunt Morgan.
