So...if this is true, then the shoe is on the other foot. After so many MLS teams who have had to share football stadiums, now an NFL team may be sharing a soccer-specific stadium. Considering the other BS that USA Today is running with, there is certainly reason NOT to believe this is true. But to be quite frank, most of NFL's revenue is from their TV deals. The Chargers could suffer through two seasons at the Stub. What I have to wonder is why they aren't even considering the Rose Bowl?
No fanbase to speak of in LA…it's been 57 years since they played there…the traditional LA team the Rams have just returned and will soak up the lion's share of local attention…they fear they wouldn't draw decent crowds at the Rose Bowl…even at StubHub a healthy percentage of fans will be traveling from San Diego…smart move…a sold-out stadium while they establish roots…the one thing they'll have is by far the best #10 in town…expect to see Rivers' face on billboards throughout the county...
Let's not forget this has been something that has been floated for a while. It's not an idea that just came out of nowhere. This is likely done. USA Today doesn't do too much bullshit. FTW does.
MLS schedule is/was supposed to be announced today. If it's delayed, it could be due to last minute tinkering to the Galaxy's slate. Or perhaps MLS has been prepared for this for a while, and we'll see a ton of dates available to the Chargers in the fall.
The Rose Bowl has been approached several times about hosting an NFL team temporarily and have declined. The only reason the Chargers will be @ Stub Hub is the fact that they have no fan base to speak of in LA and 60k empty seats at the Coliseum looks bad on TV. I would bet on every home game being packed with fans of the visiting team.
MLS/Galaxy need to make it patently clear that the Galaxy have priority scheduling, NOT the Chargers.
Pasadena's city council voted not to consider any NFL tenants at the Rose Bowl, and USC's 98-year Coliseum lease permits only one NFL team to share the stadium.
I'm pretty sure when the ordinance was passed, they were still thinking about the possibility of the return of the Raiders and the "South Central" fans they attracted. Of course I type this from my hotel in Carson. Los Angeles has changed a lot in 20 years.
I'm guessing that mid-week, 15k cap on fans will also be waived for the Chargers. Would be pretty damn funny if it wasn't.
The Rose Bowl wants more tenants. The people who live near the stadium don't want them. There are a fixed number of events right now and they fight any attempt to increase that. I think they are limited to 12 big events per year but can petition the city council to add up to six more. That's it and changing the limit is very hard.
The optics of having NFL lines on your field for the home stretch of the season, for a tentpole franchise is a big downside.
