There wasn't a problem when they offered to act as hosts, only later they decided not to be hospitable: Komende donderdag speelt AZ in Enschede tegen Royal Antwerp FC in de play-offs van de UEFA Cup.
Well, it's the one who decides. Whether he's right or not in this case isnot possible to be managed by football people.
He knew before agreeing to host the tie "Suzanne and Freak" were performing in his city. Then simply speak up before the offer is made. They were consulted and signed off on it. Pacta sunt servanda, donot break your word.
Excellent performance & results by both PSV & Feyenoord. AZ will have to fight and show their best in the away game though.
Two wins and a draw are decent enough though all teams played at home (AZ's home for the day was Enschede). Four wins next week will go a ways to helping out the coefficient.
Antwerp is really a fake club in my eyes, hopefully AZ can do the job. Antwerp is like AZ under Scheringa but even worse. Football clubs are excellent for money laundering as well.
It turns out that the mayor of Enschede did find plenty of extra manpower (from Amsterdam, Limburg, Northern Holland, ...). Police might have even outnumbered the few fans that went as roughly 90% of seats went unsold. Most likely the extra manpower wouldn't have been needed if the mayor hadn't reneged on his promise (a pity for the Dutch taxpayers). What a joke.
I really hope AZ goes through. It will give the AZ talents invaluable experiences they can put in at Orange level.
No they're not, they are 7 spots behind: https://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/country/#/yr/2019
That isn't the most recent ranking. This season Cyprus are almost 4 points behind Holland. If APOEL wins the return against Ajax they'll only be 2.5 points behind. Also next season, when the 2015-16 results are scrapped, they'll automatically gain almost 3 points on Holland (and the season after they'll gain more than 3 points on Holland, ...). PSV denying Cyprus points and adding those to Holland's coefficient is helpful.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_coefficient#Men's_Country_coefficient is usually the most up to date listing as the points are always added in following that days match. The bottom line in UEFA competition is to "....just win baby..." (quote from the late Al Davis, owner of the Oakland Raiders of American football)

Nope. They play their EL/CL matches with internationally matured players, while we had teams that were newbees on that stage with rookie/very young players or with teams that didnot take the EL serious like PSV and Ajax until recently did as they were more interested in securing the top two spots with access to the CL. It now dawns on those two that this behaviour is in the longer run biting them with even the champion having to go through multiple qualies. I some years ago blasted both for that ignorant attitude, but it's only now after they were bitten by the by me predicted outcome they changed their tunes.
The problem is with the teams that get quickly eliminated from the competitions. Yearly country coefficients are figured out by - (total points from all clubs)/(# of clubs in the competitions) Last year Ajax got lots of points but the other clubs were all eliminated early on so all the Ajax points were divided by 5. Utrecht getting eliminated from the EL without winning a match was not a good thing. Lots of draws are not a good thing either. PSV dropped four points for not making it to the group stage of the CL. The reorganization by UEFA doesn't do any favors either because any team that automatically goes into the group stage gets 4 points. Spain, Italy, Germany, and England all start with +16 because of this. It's possible after next week that Cyprus have only APOEL in the competition, if PSV take care of business. The problem is that the Dutch model of keeping players for only 2-3 years makes for high squad turnover. This is maybe OK in the Eredivisie but really causes problems in European competition. As @feyenoordsoccerfan pointed out these other teams have decent rosters with players of international experience. They also tend to be physically stronger than the young Dutch teams.
I already have not much respect for Hugo Borst, but this is another low for him: https://www.ad.nl/nederlands-voetbal/ He's talking in his column in AD about the clubs/players that get extra preparation time by postponing matches in the week before a European match. He calls them wimps, softies because of that. If you can't grasp the importance of it for Dutch football to make sure we get at the kick off with as good a prep we can manage then you're unworthy to be a sports columnist.
All right! Ajax took care of business today. Now Feyenoord, PSV, and AZ need to step things up tomorrow.
Ajax will be in pot 2 for the UCL group stage draw. Zenit or Chelsea (from pot 1) would be a dream scenario... coupled with nobodies from Pot 3 (e.g. Salzburg) and Pot 4 (Genk). But crooked UEFA will surely make Ajax life miserable and hand Ajax the toughest draw possible... something like Liverpool, Ajax, Lyon/Inter, Galatasaray

Stengs saves the day for the Dutch football in the last minute. Still, AZ will have to go through extra-time. Come on boys!
