Re: CCL Group B UNAM will likely take the 1st spot but 2nd place should be up for grabs. In the end I think Houston will take it.
Re: CCL Group B ONLY watched the last 10 minutes of the unam/san fran game. seemed like a good match. was pumas playing with only mexicans? didn't see a an extranjero
Re: CCL Group B Pumas was playing with 9 men and still showed chances toward the end. Martin Bravo failed in his debut as he threw an elbow. The suplente gk, failed and was also ejected. Bad game from a bunch of bench riders Palencia was the only starter to play.
SF - UNAM draw is good result for Houston. I can make an argument that a SF loss would be even better. Prior posts indicates that UNAM may not be committed to this competition. Or may be dealing with fixture congestion. A road draw while resting the first team is not a bad result. The result also supports my thought that the road games in Panama and El Salvador are going to be tough.
Re-scheduling of the LA Firpo @ Houston game just got more difficult with the cancellation of Houston's league game this weekend. That game, versus San Jose, has been reset for the only opening the Dynamo had to host Firpo (Oct. 15). I imagine the Firpo game will have to go into November which is during the all important MLS cup tournament.
The timing was just to quick to move that game to another city like Frisco, is my guess. Plus, the Dynamo dont want to give up on their home game (both competitively and revenue wise). I agree with their thinking.
Houston v Firpo game that was postponed due to Hurricane Ike has been rescheduled and will now be played on November 26.
Agreed. Firpo played horrible. They came looking for the draw and practicaly only played one attacking player the whole game. We were lucky to get out of there with only 3 goals against, as UNAM hit the post twice and missed atleast two more shots straight in front of the goal. Our left backs (both of them) played horrible and all three goals came from that side. It has to be said though, that we have just got a new coach and our team, although pretty much the same as last year, is nowhere as good, and is even struggling to get wins in the league. Congrats to UNAM.
I've not seen it reported but I'm sure we all know that SF - Houston in Panama was 0-0. Both teams had chances and could have taken the points. The Monks came closest with a header off the cross bar. I think Houston created the most quality chances. Houston played a bench heavy team. Ching, De Rosario, Davis and Mullan did not start in favor of the 2nd string players of Kamara, Holden, Ashe, and Cameron. Mullan came in at 60', Ching at 70' and DeRosario at 75'. The last 30 minutes was all Dynamo pressing for the win while SF hung on by their nails. A Panama player slap/punched Dynamo keeper Onstadt right in front of the referree. The ref moved to reach into his back pocket. The Monk however was rolling around on the ground like he'd been shot and somehow the ref forgot about the card. The referreeing was bewildering as usual in Central America.
How it looks so far? - UNAM cruising as expected. Victory next week hosting Houston will come close to locking up qualification for them. - With only two points from two home games SF looks like the weakest team. Next week's game for them at Firpo will be huge. Realisticly, they need to win either that game or the following week in Houston. - Firpo has lost their game at UNAM. Yawn. Tells little because everyone in the group will lose in Mexico City. - Houston is happy with their road point. Next week they will try to steal a point at UNAM. If they do, they are sitting pretty. If they fail as you have to expect, then they still have control of their destiny with three out of four games left at home.
I feel good about it as well, but I don't think we could qualify out of Group A. That is a strong group. Qualification for the Dynamo won't come easy. If Pumas gets a result in Houston in 3 weeks then that could leave the Dynamo on 4 or 5 points with only the two Firpo games to play. They may need to win both. I'm assuming in that the Dynamo beat SFFC at home.
I am. Let's go Dynamo! It's nice to see an MLS team having some pride. Edit: Pumas scores one as soon as I'm done posting this.
