They chose to pay that fee when they were told in avance that would happen. No one forced them to pay it. FC Edmonton refused to join USL and sat 2018 out. They knew that the likelihood of staying long term in USL after a CPL launch was slim. Fury misread the situation or actually believed they'd get their way anyways... That's on them
Well.. that’s a bit of revisionist history, now isn’t it? FC Edmonton didn’t refuse to join USL, there were serious questions of whether Edmonton had closed up shop or not. They hadn’t committed to playing in NASL in 2018 and I don’t believe they were even included in NASL’s proposal for another year of waivers. By all appearances, Edmonton seemed to have already been shutdown before they announced they would take the year off and join the CPL in 2019..
Nope, Fath went on record that he would not join USL. https://edmontonsun.com/sports/soccer/fc-edmonton-ceases-operations “We will not go to the USL and we’re not going to the MLS, those are really the only two other leagues,” Fath said. “As far as the CPL, I think the CPL is exactly what Canadian soccer needs moving forward.”
There's been chatter around the league about potential loan deals. Think Canadiens graduating from youth teams but not yet on their club's first teams.— Ryan Brandt (@Ryan_Brandt) December 16, 2018 And I'll be honest, I was skeptical initially about what kind of interest Canadians abroad would have but from talking to a bunch have heard the opposite. Everyone wants to be a part of @CPLsoccer - if not this year, then down the road. Glad to be proven wrong, exciting times!— Ryan Brandt (@Ryan_Brandt) December 16, 2018
Would like to introduce myself. I've been here on this forum for ages, being a Peruvian who used to live in Canada. I am going back in a few months and finally my wishes of giving Canada a proper football league has been granted, meaning my interest is now peaking. I've adopted myself as a York 9 fan. Looking forward to some fun away days when I get back.
To my knowledge, so far Forge and FC Edmonton will be the contenders first season. However, it's still very early and it depends on the rest of their signings. I'm fairly confident Edmonton will challenge though due to their history compared to the rest.
This is it. Ottawa behaved poorly. Until the CSA made an issue of it, however, CONCACAF should have kept out of things (at least in public). I still hope we see Ottawa in the USL for 2019 and then the CPL for 2020 onward but there are ways to do things that don't make everyone look like ham fisted incompetents.

I could see them getting a temporary stay for this season given that they are already well into planning for the USL season, but I'm not sure where CAS would come down on them staying in USL after this season.
I'm not sure what it said, but I think I figured out who said it: If this refers to the RFC Seraing case, that's not right. That case was about whether arbitration clauses are valid under Belgian law. Here, Ottawa is consenting to CAS jurisdiction and Belgian law is irrelevant anyway https://t.co/f5CmURrfJw— Steven Bank (@ProfBank) December 19, 2018
He had wrote: The Ottawa Fury CAS challenge is almost certain to fail. In Sept the Brussels Court Of Appeal decided that CAS no longer has the final say in sanctioning clubs. So even if rule in Ottawa’s favour (which is far from certain) it would largely be symbolic as it’s not enforceable. But he was corrected as you pointed out Also, this shows that Ottawa are likely to get their injunction for 2019 until the CAS rules on their case Presumably, Ottawa has requested expedited procedures and seeks at least a provisional remedy allowing them to play this year in USL. Similar standard to prelim injunction requiring irreparable harm, likely success on the merits, and interests outweighing those of CONCACAF/FIFA https://t.co/xm6cnLa0h5— Steven Bank (@ProfBank) December 19, 2018
BTW, I put in a request to create a CanPL forum, if you agree, feel free to put your support in. There's a certain threshold for number of people supporting a request before it will actually get created. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/canadian-premier-league-forum.2091665/
If anyone isn't already following Professor Bank, I would highly suggest you do. He's a wealth of knowledge for legal insights associated to FIFA from a legal standpoint. Miki is also a good follow for legal insights, but he's currently more MLS and US Soccer related. In relation to the current topic at hand, I'll also add this from ProfBank: FIFA has occasionally issued statements that suggest some willingness to consider moves that might simply be motivated by the search for better competition. For example, consider this from a FIFA official in response to reports that Rangers and Celtic might consider the EPL pic.twitter.com/WwhOuO7dFm— Steven Bank (@ProfBank) December 19, 2018 It'll certainly be interesting to see how this shakes out for 2019 and beyond.
Thank you, I really appreciate this. I had created this one under CONCACAF https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/concacaf-new-division-1-league-the-canadian-premier-league.2049388/ I have neglected it a bit but I should document it in the following days
Just to save you on work, maybe consider just dropping a link in the CONCACAF forum pointing to this thread? Also, go to the thread I created in the Customer Service forum and say you agree that a CPL forum should be created.

Actually a fair number of MLS teams play top collegiate teams and youth national teams as part of their preseasons - at least when they stay in the U.S. A fair number of MLS teams do tend to spend a week or two out of the country during the preseason as well.
Random question. What would the CPL and CSAs reaction to solidarity payments be? Is that doable in Canada?
