Just a quick gathering of opinions on the quality of the league

I was at the inaugural game, watched it again, saw Pacific vs Halifax last night. From what I saw, it seems that the league was not exaggerating when claiming that the quality would be high at kick-off and wanting to be above USL Championship and projected to be under MLS (Most Central American leagues are there).

Most analysts (even known skeptics), fans, casuals and non-fans admitted that the quality was much better they anticipated. I've watched my load of USL games (Ottawa Fury and TFC II) and the level of play was similar from the get go. I saw absolutely nothing suggesting it was lower. As the game progressed, it kept going higher. I found the play to be more entertaining.

The most skeptical sports journalists are in the French province of Quebec as they barely cover CPL and are all about Montreal Impact...However: (translate in twitter)

    That was pre-game
(Most thought it would be somewhat like USL One) Half-time
(Saw a level comparable to USL Championship) 2nd half (when Forge started to play really well)
(Saw that they could be trouble to lower tier MLS - wouldn't look out of place)

The point is that low expectations were exceeded. I think the spring season will be your "tune-up" season. I felt that Forge and Halifax used the wrong starting XI which saw a drastic change of their style of play once subs were being made. Some guys had no business being starters and better options were on the bench. Teams will know one another better, team chemistry will be better.

The Fall season (July to October) will be CPL's true season and I expect CPL to achieve a higher level of play than USL Championship and for the quality to keep rising over the years.

My thoughts from the CPL game between Forge FC and York 9 FC on the personal level. Well everyone else is doing it!

I turned down an offer to see a special screening of the Avengers movie to attend this game. Then I have to replace my old car on three days notice and leave the lot with a '13 Dodge Avenger!

^ Thanks for your extensive description of the game experience.

Too bad you didn't skip out on a special screening of the new Aladdin movie instead - you could have ended up with a flying carpet!

News on the Montreal Area team

    https://www.tsn.ca/radio/montreal-690/bunbury-2021-is-more-realistic-1.1298455

    Important points/quotes:
    • "This will happen" - very assuring words
    • There will also be a franchise in Quebec City
    • Plans to Open up a developmental program in Montreal that "will be second to none"
    • Spoke with commissioner Clanachan and said, wants to get things right even if it means 2021. 2020 still on the table
    • Laval is the first location, but others are being assessed
    • Believes the league will be important, "great start just need to keep the momentum going; not let the "excitement die off"
    • Says that in his opinion, the quality of play was very high for CPL.

The goal must be one additional team next year for a total of 8. Anything past that is a bonus.

An even eight would be nice. The goal, however, must be getting the teams right rather than getting them in 2020.

Saskatchewan Selects relieved their kit today. They will be playing their 1st game on May 4th against USL Two Calgary Foothills in a bid to test the market for a club into the CPL
    Looking good for the tickets

Seen too many leagues start with lots of hype and balloon up quickly only to pop. Hope we focus on growing smart and not growing fast.

More positive reviews regarding Onesoccer production of the CPL and some jabs in the thread at Ottawa's decision to remain in USL

I think the league is going to need some expansion teams. Aside from wanting more than seven teams in the league I think that it is unrealistic - despite the best efforts of all involved - to expect that every new team is going to survive long term. History is simply against it. Getting at least a couple in soon is good but, yes, grow smart rather than fast.

Fantastic news for Saskatoon. The ticket sell is going fantastic and it looks like Saskatoon are closer to get a CPL club [IMG]

A CPL rule that will massively help the Canadian program is for teams to have to play a minimum of 3 U21 Canadian players for a minimum total of 1000 minutes per season.

There were some skeptics on this rule as they believe it would affect teams flexibility with their rosters.

Pacific FC is ahead with theses stats
1 win and 1 loss so far. I expect that this will allow the National team to field much stronger U squads for Olympics Qualifications and World Cup thanks to CPL as they will have clocked lots of professional minutes

You think both Saskatoon and Regina should have a team of their own or do you think its vital for Saskatoon team;s territory to include Regina?

Looks like the Saskatchewan game testing the market was a success. The Saskatchewan Selects lost 2-1 against USL-2 (Reigning Champions) Calgary Foothills in Saskatoon. Good crowd for a cold night

Pickering Club wanted to acquire an MLS franchise
    https://www.crainsdetroit.com/artic...vsWg6H58xk_kndn6pSnQWE1-hkU5X7iGt7Dw34w4IdCo8

Greek-born Canadian commercial property developer Andreas Apostolopoulos, who bought the Pontiac Silverdome in 2009 and Detroit's historic Penobscot Building last year, wants to build a privately funded 25,000-seat open-air stadium along with a mall, residential space and office towers on the site of the half-built Wayne County jail.

His Toronto-based Triple Properties Inc. is among the companies that submitted bids to Wayne County seeking to acquire the five current justice properties and the former Detroit Police Department headquarters at 1300 Beaubien St.

Apostolopoulos wants a Major League Soccer expansion franchise, but the league's expansion plans beyond adding a second New York team in 2015 are undetermined.
