Maybe I am way off here, but when the new domestic Canadian league takes off, they should make it a spring/summer league only. This way, franchises could operate on far less money than if it is a normal seven-month season and players could play overseas from August through the following spring. This is the same approach used by the WNBA here in the states. A spring/summer league would probably have a chance at decent tv ratings before all of the established sports start. The WNBA never runs into the NFL season.

The existing teams here are already basically a spring/summer season. This schedule is almost dictated in all locales by weather. Going to the Storm games in May with the temperature in the low 30s and the snow shovelled off the pitch and onto the track. Could proably rough it through September, but October starts getting dicey in various places and that puts them into the heart of the college outdoor athletic season.
