It is reported that Ian Bridge is out as head coach of the U-17s. http://communities.canada.com/thepr...1/08/ian-bridge-out-as-women-s-u17-coach.aspx This isn't such a surprise. It was posted elsewhere that Bridge was under contract for 2009 and the CSA kept him on as coach of the U-17s instead of putting in someone of Morace's choosing, presumably so they wouldn't have to compensate him. The announcement of his appointment in summer of 2009 was very careful in not stating that he would lead the team into competition in 2010. It is unfortunate for the team of course that they have to adjust to a new coach and possibly a different style with not very long before qualification.
The U-17s are having a camp in Toronto right now. There's no announcement on the CSA site yet. This is the roster from the report on the first exhibition match: Rachelle Beanlands Diamond Simpson Alison Clarke Shannen Jainudeen Katherine Caverly Nicole Setterlund Sabrina Hémond Abigail Raymer Nour Ghoneim Caroline Beaulne Amélia Pietrangelo Eve Badana Emily Campbell Annie Renaud Haillie Price Yazmin Ongtengco-Hintzen Chantale Campbell Kinley McNicoll Victoria Parkinson Charléne Achille Kylie Davis Ally Courtnall Cantave, Haisha D’Angelo, Sabrina Therien, Sophie With no announcement we also don't know who the coach is at the moment, presumably one of the assistants Rosenlund or Page.
Canada announces its roster for the CONCACAF U-20 championship. http://canadasoccer.com/news/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=3933 It's a pretty mysterious team to most Canadians. A small number were at the U-20 or U-17 WCs in 2008 but most are recent additions to the national program. They are very young and have little international experience. 10 out of the 23 are eligible for the 2012 U-20s compared to only 3 on the American roster of 20. Clearly, Morace has built the team that she wanted. This will be her first meaningful test.
Canada wins their first game, over Costa Rica, 1-0. CSA game report. I'll leave the analysis for those better qualified but I thought it was a promising start. Canada had trouble linking in midfield but I expect this will improve as they play more games together. CR was expected to be their toughest test in the group. CR has 12 players from the U-17 team that defeated Canada in the CONCACAF semi-final in 2008 and went on to compete in the WC. Lamarre, who's a bit of an iffy passer I think, looked wonderful setting up the only goal. Leon also showed some enterprising moves. Morace is going with speed up front. There aren't the big girls as in past teams, like Armstrong or Ezurike or Granberg. On defense Morace has a little more experience. All four defenders are in college and all have played W-League as well. There were a couple of terrible clearances and Woeller didn't have the quickness to keep up with her attacker some times but after that shot off the post in the first half CR didn't have many really good chances.
Courtesy of the Rivalry Forum, news that Brittany Timko and Emily Zurrer have signed to play in Germany for SG Essen-Schönebeck: http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/...artikel_SG-verpflichtet-Zurrer-und-Timko.html Also, Kelly Parker has signed with SC Freiburg: http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/frauen/startseite/520082/artikel_SC-holt-Parker-und-French.html This is very welcome news as Canada needs to have many more players in high level leagues.
Canada gets its last chance at U-20 qualifying. http://canadasoccer.com/news/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=3958 I would really hate to see them fail. From past CSA behavior they would unplug the program until just before 2012. The girls who would be eligible then would have no benefit from the national team program for the next two years except for the few who get invited to senior camps. This would only make it more difficult to catch up with Mexico in 2012. Apparently there has been illness in the Canadian camp. How much this has interfered with fielding the best team we don't know.
Canada was unable to qualify for a spot in the U20 WWC - and there were three spots open from CONCACAF. Carolina Morace has certainly failed her first real test as Canada's head coach. This shouldn't come as a complete surprise to anyone who has taken a look at her record (or Italy's for that matter), but that's not much consolation. I hope we're not witnessing the beginnings of the return of Canadian women's soccer to pre-Pellerud 3'rd world status.
It's that time of year again when American colleges announce the players they have signed up for the coming fall. A number of current and former Canadian YNT players are going to continue their careers in the NCAA. Here are some I've noticed: Michigan: http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/spec-rel/020410aaa.html Nkem Ezurike, a forward from Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia; Vicky Parsons, a goalkeeper from Mississauga, Ontario; and Shelina Zadorsky, a left defender/left midfielder from London, Ontario. The schedule for the CONCACAF U-17 finals has been announced. http://www.concacaf.com/page/WUnder17s/NewsDetail/0,,12813~1953542,00.html The latest CSA article: http://canadasoccer.com/news/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=3968 Expectations for this team are not very high. The U-17s finished in third in 2008 which would not qualify them this time. Their coach, Ian Bridge, stepped down because the CSA would only offer him a short term contract. They have had noticeably less preparation time than the U-20s did, although there's still time for another camp and preparatory games (and considering that the U-20s will not require their budget for this year money should be freed up). No final roster has been released yet. There doesn't seem to be much information available online about these players but here's an interesting story about Ally Courtnall, daughter of former Vancouver Canuck Russ Courtnall. I noticed that she's not on the U.S. U-17 player pool any more so I suppose she's made up her mind which country to play for (or the decision has been made for her).

Over on the Rivalry Forum there's a link for the highlights of the Essen Schonebeck - Gutersloh game in which Timko and Zurrer debuted. On Feb. 13 2 p.m. CET there will be a live stream of the Freiburg - Potsdam match on DFB-TV which could see an appearance by Kelly Parker for Freiburg. On the other hand, two Canadians who have recently been overseas, Katie Thorlakson (Australia) and Kaylyn Kyle (Sweden), were recently seen suited up for Surrey United of the Vancouver area MWSL. I suppose they must have had their amateur status re-instated.
Signing announcements for Danica Wu, Ohio State and Adriana Leon, Notre Dame. This is more information than I've seen elsewhere for these players.
This may be worth mentioning here: Apparently Canada are scheduled to play a friendly against Germany in September.
That's good news. What's not good news is that Brittany Timko reportedly tore an ACL in the game against Poland.
Canada's U-17s are involved in a 4 Nations tournament in Trinidad and Tobago with the host team, Mexico and Jamaica. http://ttffonline.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1187&Itemid=1 It's unusual to play a group opponents just before qualifications, but Canada hasn't been able to play any internationals with this team so they could hardly turn down the invitation from Even Pellerud, former head of the Canadian women's program.
Canada U-17s defeat Jamaica 4-1 http://canadasoccer.com/news/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=4002 after losing 2-1 to Mexico in the first game of the T&T 4 Nations tournament.
In one of the stories concerning Kara Lang's re-signing with Vancouver she lets out the news that the NT is playing China in April. (But surely she can't recover from her ACL injury fast enough to play next month?) In other news, noticed that Atlanta Beat released both Christine Latham and Sharolta Nonen.
2 matches vs China in April 27th 29th in China is coming true. and the wps have started.does Sinclair and Leblanc ,Chapman will go China and play the two matches?
Thanks for that. I expect one of the WPS goalkeepers to be there since the usual third string, Stephanie Labbe, apparently will be staying in Sweden. The Norwegian club LSK Kvinner announced on their site that Canada will be visiting Norway for a game June 3. http://www.lsk-kvinner.no/sak/004013.asp
Noticed over on the college forum that this agency http://www.cwfootball.com was acting as agent for a number of N. American players in WPS and in Europe, including the three Canadians in Germany. Looking at their list of players we learn that Selenia Iachelli of Edmonton and former Nebraska Cornhusker is with ASD Torres Calcio in Sardinia.
