A blast from the past, with cameos from all the old favorites including the Enormous Pile of Warmed Over Shit formerly known as The Worlds Largest Mayor. Hunt was referring to a Lashutka pledge, which Hunt seemed to regard as ironclad. Lashutka, as a deal-clincher, had promised MLS officials that Columbus would build a soccer stadium, a promise that kicked the city’s latest arena/stadium effort into high gear. And: "Whether the league ever got off the ground—and it was real iffy there for a while—was not weighing heavily on the mayor’s mind. The city had already reaped the PR reward." “So what?” Lashutka told Suburban News Publications when asked about the possibility of Columbus’s MLS team going belly-up. “If it doesn’t work, it was nothing ventured and minimal effort and finances expended." http://www.columbusmonthly.com/cont...e-crew-make-it-in-columbus-february-1996.html
I remember voting for the Stadium and it was stated that if the league folded they would just fill in the hole with dirt.
Jeff Long really, really hates Columbus, OH. Latest blog post: https://jefflong62.com/2015/10/08/well-folks-i-wasnt-born-here-but-im-sure-dying-here/ Relevant quote: "Or I could be dyeing here, if there were any kind of textile industry here now or whenever this glorified truck stop of a city was actually worth the trouble it would take to drown it in the Scioto River." And by "relevant", I mean it's the entirety of the post.
An even better question: Who’s going to go see these guys play? The target audience, as one team official says, will be “affluent people with children who play soccer.” Because the tickets are so expensive.
