Darcy Norman's resume is grade A, anyway. Norman’s soccer-specific experience includes time as Performance Data Analyst and Fitness Rehab Coach with the German Men’s National Team from 2012-2018, helping Die Mannschaft to the 2014 FIFA World Cup title and third-place finish at Euro 2016. From 2015-2018, Norman also worked as the Director of Performance with Italian club AS Roma, helping the side to a semifinal appearance in 2017-18 UEFA Champions League. Prior to those positions, he worked as the Strength Coach and Rehab Specialist for Bayern Munich, helping the German club to the 2009-10 Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal Championship and the Final of that season’s UEFA Champions League.
Once it was revealed that JK left off LD to take two injured wing/forwards in his stead I lost nearly all respect for him as a coach. The discussion of overrated is irrelevant and smacks of the fallacy of infinite choice. LD was fit and ready, he was clearly a superiour player to the injured alternatives. That was an outrageous decision. I challenge you to point out a more deliberate sabotage of a team, ever. JK set the roster up like it was an exhibition. I can't think of a guy in any sport I follow being cut from a team that so clearly needed his services without an arrest intervening.
I have it down as the worst managing decision across any sport I follow. It is the worst because it was premeditated.
That pic reminds me of one of those graphic Captcha things: "select all the pictures with people happy with the status quo" sort of thing.
"Make first [touch relevant?]." "Rotation to disorganize [defense?]." "If marked move to open space." "Time on the ball stay, not [rush?]." "Start the attack on one side, finish [on the other?]." "Time off the ball pushing forward, runs to [their area?]." Defensive principle: "Press after loss of possession." Exercises: 4v4 +3 Functional 11v11 Tournament 6v6 Very fundamental stuff. Although the 4v4+3 are fun, I remember playing those a lot back in the day.
The problem is that by going to the games, you are just handing USSF more money and that won't change anything.
I agree with all this. Plus, they are putting all this time and effort into this roster. Most of this roster is not really even vying for a spot on the real roster. There are guys they are paying, housing, and teaching in depth daily who can't even crack a USL starting 11. They have everyone in a bunker, but 80% of the guys in the bunker on radio silence are not the guys you are going to war with.
Everybody is excited and happy! 🎥 @JozyAltidore and @JmoSmooth13 stopped by #JanuaryCamp to get their first taste of the new #USMNT era. Nice to see ya, guys! 👋— U.S. Soccer Men's National Team (@USMNT) January 22, 2019
In GC 2003 and 2015 were jointly held with Mexico and Canada respectively, and 2019 will see a single doubleheader abroad for 2 of the non American groups. Olympic qualifying is about half abroad half here, and it's been decades since we've hosted U20 or U17 regional championships. It's about greed, both ours and the region's. Ours is straightforward and I assume theirs that they get their share of the gate at massive American football stadia for popular teams like us and Mexico. In terms of deciding to continue this, I am sure that there is some sort of hosting vote or bidding process with a nexus where we submit our willingness and they then choose ("confirm") their host. All we have to do is say, nah, how about every other time Canada, Mexico, someone else handles this instead. I am sure we are a willing participant in CONCACAF's rubber stamp. The only other thing in that neighborhood of unmitigated greed is any game we play on rolled out sod, which also sometimes counts GC. That is not preparation for real soccer games, that is a spectacle, and it usually involves Brazil, Argentina, some team that could provide a serious contest, but instead we get some distorted simulacrum of soccer.
We shall see who sticks and you are probably right. They are probably coaching up many players in the system who we won't see again. I do expect a more serious version of this, this summer at GC. This is more like practice (but for the coaches) or symbolic. But they won't get this long of a chance for the March window or any May games. It'll be GC camp. Catch 22 being that I wouldn't trust Sarachan's talent eval and if Berhalter is truly changing the team then he should be broadly looking at how the pool fits his system, basically a redo of last year. But I assume some mix of our selecting to win obsession and the drive to school the core players will turn GC 2019 into a perceived A team camp. In which case this summer the perceived "right players" will get the same system boot camp. My concern is based on how we fared under Sarachan I would question if we had identified the right players. I think a lot was Sarachan's lack of tactical nous and conservatism. But I am not sold this will be the endgame group either.
I count many on this roster who are serious contender to make the qualifiers: - Steffen, Bono - Cannon, Glad, Lima - Acosta, Arriola, Delgado, Canouse, Trapp - Zardes That's 11 players, a sizable contingent. Most of them would be backups, but we need to find a winger, a left back, a defensive mid, a center back who's not just the physical type (virtually all our CBs in Europe are troncos), a backup keeper, and a couple of strikers in case Weah & Haji don't pan out.
Apologies, I never realized one joke harkening back to "Anyone can play left back", would lead to five pages of JK-LD bullshit...
You see, in a more soccer-savvy country, they'd put those two in a show to talk about the sport and call it something like "The Landon & Jurgen Show."
Would you believe that "We will build a wall and Mexico will pay for it"? Show me the facts, please. Give me names. Be sure to remember that AJ got hurt in training in Brazil long after the cut to 23 was made.
Let's start with Aron Jóhannsson (spelling courtesy of Wiki). IIRC he was injured before the World Cup, was not 100% at the Cup, and only saw limited action there. US Soccer records show that Jóhannsson replaced injured Jozy Altidore v Ghana, then DNP v Portugal, Germany or Belgium. What say you? Edit: Nice edit, but not true. He was hurt during his club season, and he never returned to full fitness pre-Cup.

Didnt miss any club games. Was left on the bench during the WC warm up games. Then got injured after the World cup
Not true this was analyzed and addressed ad nauseam: Johannsson could grit his teeth and play through the ankle pain, but in Brazil, another old injury began to flare up: "I had a hernia in 2012. They did the surgery, but apparently they didn't make it good enough." Johannsson couldn't remember exactly what set it off, but said it began bothering him right when they got to Brazil—long after Klinsmann had cut Donovan. "In training, I couldn't show my level," Johannsson says. "I was in the physio room four hours a day trying to get ready. [They would do] everything. Treatment, needles, ice, everything. They tried everything. In the [Ghana] game, I had no problem. I felt nothing. I don't know if it was the excitement and the adrenaline, but you know in trainings after that I couldn't show the coaches or the players my best level." https://sports.vice.com/en_us/article/yp74ag/aron-johannssons-injury-hell-is-finally-over Johannsson's injury wasn't picked up during the Yanks' World Cup in Brazil but was an long-term injury that the striker wanted to address, Stewart clarified. "He's had this injury for a longer while than at the U.S. national team," Stewart said in an telephone interview. "It was something that you could play with; it wasn't a problem to. I've played with the same problem myself. Once it's time to rest, it's something that can aggravate you every time you step out on the field." http://www.espn.com/soccer/united-s...n-aron-johannssonjozy-altidore-and-freddy-adu
Berhalter has slashed the squad down to 23 players for the matches: DETAILED ROSTER BY POSITION (Club; Caps/Goals): GOALKEEPERS (2): Sean Johnson (New York City FC; 5/0), Zack Steffen (Columbus Crew SC; 6/0) DEFENDERS (8): Reggie Cannon (FC Dallas; 2/0), Nick Lima (San Jose Earthquakes; 0/0), Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls; 2/0), Daniel Lovitz (Montreal Impact/CAN; 0/0), Mark McKenzie (Philadelphia Union; 0/0), Keegan Rosenberry (Colorado Rapids; 0/0), Auston Trusty (Philadelphia Union; 0/0), Walker Zimmerman (LAFC; 4/1) MIDFIELDERS (10): Paul Arriola (D.C. So now I have to fight a war on two fronts simultaneously? This was pretty easy to find: https://www.transfermarkt.com/aron-johannsson/verletzungen/spieler/119169 Aron Jóhannsson INJURY HISTORY 13/14 Knee Injury May 1, 2014 May 15, 2014 14 days {Missed} 5 Games 14/15 Ankle Surgery Jul 3, 2014 Sep 29, 2014 88 days {Missed} 8 Games 14/15 Groin Surgery Aug 18, 2014 Oct 27, 2014 70 days {Missed} 9 Games You guys worry me. But Jóhannsson himself is not really the point. Klinsmann was not going to include Donovan on his roster, period, under any circumstances. It's not that Donovan just missed out, or was in Klinsmann's top 30 but not his top 23. Klinsmann could not bring himself to go to Brazil with 22 warriors plus Donovan. Jóhannsson's presence on the roster is just one element of proof, but in truth he is almost entirely irrelevant to the larger argument. Donovan's fans were frustrated then and are still frustrated now because they knew and know that Donovan was obviously and evidently one of the top 23 players available in our pool at the time. But Klinsmann had his own ideas, and it was his selection to make.
Some of you are going to be on your death bed and instead of rosebud you'll be whispering Donovan, Klinsman or Arena.
