I'm expecting Cameroon & Equatorial Guinea to qualify. South Africa barely got by Kenya & Ivory Coast hasn't faced any competition in this qualifying tournament.
Wouldn't surprise me though if we see the same two African teams again in this Olympic tournament. Cameroon and South Africa, just like 2012. But Equatorial Guinea will probably be slightly favored over South Africa. If South Africa can keep the game low scoring, that's their best chance to beat Equatorial Guinea. South Africa has to turn it into a low-scoring slug-fest, like they did to Japan's reserves in the 2012 Olympics.
Zimbabwe will play Ivory Coast on Aug. 23 as FIFA has allowed the match to be rescheduled. The first leg that Zimbabwe failed to show up for & was fined for remains as a 3-0 win for Ivory Coast as a forfeit. What a mess. http://allafrica.com/stories/201508130868.html
Ivory Coast women withdraw from Olympic qualifiers Ivory Coast women's team have withdrawn from qualifying for the 2016 Olympics ahead of Sunday's third round second-leg match away to Zimbabwe. Ivory Coast had been handed a 3-0 walkover in the first leg after Zimbabwe failed to travel to Ivory Coast because of a lack of funds. The latest twist puts Zimbabwe through but their place in the next round, to face Cameroon, is in doubt. Fifa wants assurances they have the funds for both home and away games. The matches, which would determine who reaches tournament in Rio, are scheduled to be played in Yaounde on 2,3 or 4 October while the return leg match would be played in Harare a fortnight later. http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/34022035
YIKES!!! Just when I thought it couldn't get worse. Will Ivory Coast be fined as well?? If Zimbabwe can't afford to travel to Cameroon, should FIFA/CAF change up the final round to a three team round-robin?? This sucks that this happened when the other three match-ups were all very close in outcome. Maybe the CAF should restructure the Olympic qualifying tournament so that the final round ends in a round-robin tournament like the World Cup qualifiers are?
FINAL ROUND Today Cameroon 2 - Zimbabwe 1 South Africa 0 - Equatorial Guinea 0 Second legs to be played on Oct. 17. Winners qualify for 2016 Olympics
Congrats to them! After all the issues with the Zim federation a couple months ago, I do hope that the ladies are given enough money to train for and travel to the Games.
Equatorial Guinea 0-1 South Africa South Africa qualify for the Rio Olympics as the 2nd CAF team. EDIT: Loving this: RIO HERE WE COME SCENES OF JUBILATION IN BATA @BafanaBafana @DChimhavi @JVWGirlsFootbal @Banyana_Banyana pic.twitter.com/sQwFS0MVts— SAFA.net (@SAFA_net) October 18, 2015
just goes to show again how the CAF is improving. Neither South Africa or Zimbabwe qualified for the World Cup & both are heading to Rio 2016.
Tunisia has gotta be thinking, "Everyone from Africa is qualifying for these world tournaments but us". This includes youth WWC's, in addition to senior WWC's and the Olympics. Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Even Zambia and Gambia have qualified for youth WWC's. Tunisia? Nope.
Tunisia only came close to qualifying for the 2012 & 2010 U-17 tournament when they lost to Gambia(2012) & South Africa(2010). The top teams in the CAF now are: Nigeria, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, South Africa, Cameroon & Ivory Coast. We'll see where Zimbabwe(currently ranked #107) falls after the Olympic debut.
Equatorial Guinea will not compete in the preliminary competition of the Women's Olympic Football Tournament 2020 following a decision taken by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. The Disciplinary Committee held the Equatorial Guinea Football Association liable for the use of forged or falsified documents. More precisely, it found evidence of the use of two passports with different dates of birth for the player Camila Maria do Carmo Nobre de Oliveira, who participated in several matches of the preliminary competition of the Women's Olympic Football Tournament 2016. Two birth certificates containing divergent information regarding the player’s parental filiation were also provided. In addition to the expulsion from the Women's Olympic Football Tournament 2020, the Equatorial Guinea FA was sanctioned with a fine of CHF 40,000, a reprimand and a warning, on the basis of art. 61 par. 4 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC). The player was sanctioned with a ten-match suspension, to be served in the next matches of the representative team of Equatorial Guinea for which she would be eligible, as well as a fine of CHF 2,000, a reprimand and a warning, on the basis of art. 61 paras 1 and 2 of the FDC. The decisions of the Disciplinary Committee were duly notified today. Further investigations related to the eligibility of several other players are currently ongoing
Probably similar to how North Korea, after having failed WWC drug tests, were banned from the next WWC but not other competitions. I guess FIFA doesn't like applying punishments outside of the competitions the infringements were made on.
