Must be Mexico's fault that they belong in this region...

It's Mexico's fault that there is no talk in the press about the fact that there is a Copa America next year that Montagliani doesn't want to allow Mexico to play for because CONMEBOL didn't play it in the US or invite all those shit CONCACAF countries that would have gone 3 and out like they did in 2016.

It really does suck Mexico isn't playing the Copa America and on top of having gold cups every two years we now have a pointless nations league calendar.

But that's a huge leap to predicting we won't perform well in Qatar. I'm much more optimistic with this upcoming cycle than I was in the previous one where we did play a Copa America. It could be an issue much further down the line though.

A competent manager coaching the national team who fits well with the skill set Mexican players have to offer as well as how individual players are doing career wise at the club level are far more indicative of national team success.

20 to 30 years ago our pool of players desperately needed a taste of higher level competition with the national team since so few played in Europe. Those copas were awesome. Garcia Aspe mentioned the other day how important that was back then since most of the players careers were based domestically.

But that's not really the case anymore.

Clickbait-y from Martin but guess that's part of the job at Mediotiempo.

I think your underestimating the amount international competition does to Mexico. You're forgetting that Mexico also played a Confederations Cup last cycle and the cycle before that. Mexico has to rely on talent in Europe but the NT needs to be tested as a team too. People keep underestimating how getting to the Round of 16 isn't easy and it's hard work and Mexico has been hand in hand participating in Copa Americas and Confederations Cups throughout this whole run of being the only team along with Brazil in getting to the Round of 16 since 94. Not having anything to test this team besides friendlies is a huge risk since talent wise we aren't exactly thriving. We just saw how a bad squad and a tough draw can doom a team in Poland. While I don't think Mexico isn't down that path yet, it can be that bad because as I've said before, Mexico has more players in Europe but so does everybody else and the 2016 Copa America showed that if we don't keep up, they can get past us and fast.

Agreed that people tend to undervalue the difficulty of always making it past group stages but it's just too hard to predict or make foreboding assumptions about a tournament that's three years away. It's kind of ridiculous and why I thought that was clickbait-y.

Case in point in the 2005 confederations cup we looked great after playing the likes of Japan, Brazil, Germany, and Argentina but then a year later at the actual world cup struggled terribly with Iran, Angola, and Portugal or how bad we looked the year before 2014 when we had arguably our best world cup ever abroad.

Tata is experienced, competent, and seems to understand how to get the best out of Mexican players in a collective sense.

Getting optimistic over one friendly is silly but over a span of four games vs south american opponents with the challenges Tata dealt with personnel wise, I think it's more than fair to be pleased and hopeful.

More than anything, what upsets me about not playing Copa America or confederations is as a fan not seeing my national team play meaningful games with moderate to high stakes involved. Some of the funnest memories I have of Mex is playing in those games and elevating their prestige.

We should be doing everything humanly possible to always participate in the Copa America as well as Libertadores. I think everyone here agrees with that.

Tata also so far seems to strike a good balance of humble work and strong leadership. He's being understanding about different situations with players such as Hector Herrera and Chicharito without being a pushover about it either such as with Tecatito and probably Carlos Vela.

He's got a clear idea for how he envisions Mexico to play. He's studious and confident in his work but humble enough not to entertain mad notions of implementing wild tactical or individual experiments. It is just the beginning of course but it's encouraging and looks to be a nice fit.

His failures as a manager came in places where there were massive egos and insane levels of expectations due to the tradition and history of Barcelona and the Argentinian national team. He was unable to assert himself in and dominate those spaces even though I don't think Argentina fared too poorly under him given the circumstances.

I don't expect Martino to have those sort of problems here and he seems to have taken those lessons in stride.

Mexico should use the ligue of nations as preparation for the Olympics and try to look for friendlies in South America, Asia, and Africa.

The thing is I still feel you're underestimating how valuable that competition is. Yes Martino is a great coach but this is new territory.

Yeah playing in european clubs is important but also who are the top teams in international football? UEFA and CONMEBOL. They have their euro club experiences but they then also have UEFA Euros, UEFA euros qualifiers , Copa America and WC qualifiers in between. Stuff like that is important. Outside of them, all the teams to do well are probably African teams who have better competition than CONCACAF. Still it might be argued that Mexico is the best team outside of UEFA and CONMEBOL. And how did it got there? By playing in Europe and competitions like Copa America and the CC in a way. It sure isn't by playing those CONCACAF teams and facing awful level of play and bunkering. Martino is great but this will be the first tenure in years where if Mexico doesn't push for it, it will have no official competition outside of CONCACAF and that will be a huge disadvantage compared to past national teams.

Chile aren't consistent enough. On any given day we could beat them (or vice versa) . They had good runs recently and last century

    Ugh

I’m at the point right now I’m which I don’t mind our Euros sitting out Copa Oro anymore

Rather use that useless tournament to test out young players

What a waste. Sucks to no longer participate in South American tournaments anymore

Using those autumn friendlies under Tuca is just as ridiculous. Those rosters were half assed and or inexperienced.
