Excuse me? You used the word historically, as I quoted you. I just gave the history of the last five competitions.
Historical as in historically Europe consists of more competitors cause at some point in time they were put together in one geographical context= continent. Not historical as it concerns women's footy history.
I agree with both of your premises. Euro cycles do provide more high-level matches more regularly. I wish USA had the same kind of regular high-level competition. Eventually , it will pay off for Germany or some other Euro team. It's all because Europe had wheat and the horse. All other civs got hosed by the map generator.
They also got Australia, both you are essentially correct. Europe/UEFA have organized a nice 4-year cycle and wouldn't want to break it for anything.
most realistic? the game is still developing in the americas, and is likely to develop a copa america (that includes all north and south america) for the wnts and a champions league (also bicontinental) for the clubs. these tournaments will be the way fifa develops the game in this part of the world if they can get concacaf and conmebol to work together.
Considering how often USA fans bemoan the lack of serious CONCACAF competition I'm naturally inclined to think the Euro competition has to be a real advantage for European teams. But, hey, there's always the possibility of real evidence throwing some cold water on the idea. But it depends on how we choose to cherrypick the evidence. Leaving aside the Olympics for a moment, because the top European sides clearly don't give the Olympics quite as much priority as the US and some other non-European nations do, if we look at the last 3 World Cups, half the semifinalists have been from Europe in each of those World Cups. But admittedly I don't know the best way to tell whether the Euro competition has been a great benefit or not. About the same number of European teams have been in the top 10 FIFA rankings from 2003 to now, and the proportion of teams in the top 20 as well. Not much change. As an aside, perhaps we need to keep in mind that in European qualifying (both World Cup and Euros), around half the teams are not stronger than CONCACAF teams. Germany, Sweden and France are playing teams from Azerbaijan, Montenegro, Macedonia, Faroe Islands and what have you.
Possible. Still not quite the competition of European standard, dont you agree? Europe is where the money is, travel distances are shorter, the footy infrastructure is more developed in UEFA(predominantly from men's footy). Let's say we give Concacaf and UEFA 100 years to develop. Would you say Trinidad will be able to catch up as much let's say Portugal can do? Yes, Uefa has those teams as well and given the recent qualification we had many teams winning 10 out of 10 games. In Concacaf qualification there's just one team who can do that. Projected on Europe it would be like EU28 would be playing vs Serbia to qualify for a WC. UEFA offers in the middle and upper third more competition and sooner or later it'll pay off. That recent records dont prove that is IMHO due to that this is quite a new phenomenon, a development of the last 10 years when many European FAs kind of "discovered" women's footy. E.g. France and England were nobodies 10 years ago. And if we speak about how UEFA teams do at the WC then you always have to take into account that UEFA teams play other UEFA teams in the group stage and from their higher number of participating teams it is more likely they face other UEFA teams in the knockout stages. E.g. at this year' s MWC Portugal didnt reach the roundof16 cause they were beaten by a higher goal differential due to by a loss to Germany. You can interpret really only something out of inter-confederation results. Like when this year Germany is going to play France in the quarters while a filler team like Canada has a free way through to semis.
great for the game. start reshuffling the woso world order when real soccer cultures place $$, time, and attention on the table.
Happy 29th birthday to Marta, Women's FIFA World Player of the Year five times in a row between 2006 & 2010. Baller. pic.twitter.com/oaSqUgrCYm— Squawka (@Squawka) February 19, 2015
Happy birthday Marta! Is this her greatest ever goal? http://t.co/MU0JKNm7v3— FIFA Women's World Cup (@FIFAWWC) February 20, 2015
looks as if, Formiga will step away from the international game in December. At 38, it's time but sad to see her go. Following #BRA defeat on pens vs #SWE in the #Rio2016 semis, 38-year old Formiga said she'll retire from international football in December— Paulo Freitas (@Cynegeticus) August 16, 2016
Formiga's regularity will be sorely missed by the NT. Today, among the midfielders and forwards, she was the only one who played up to the expectation. Andressa Alves, Marta, Bia, Andressinha and Debinha (I wouldn't sub her though) left a lot to be desired. And for those who don't know, a few days ago was announced that Italy, Russia and Costa Rica will be featured in the international tournament that happens at the end of the year.
Marta: They eliminated us, damn, they're going to the final now. They're going to lose after that? Oh my god, they can't! I can't accept it!— Linda Eriksson (@Linda__Eriksson) August 16, 2016
Marta should just join Sweden's team. She's practically one of them by now. I think it's safe to say that she is "cursed" at ever winning a major tournament title for Brazil. She's felt more torture than any female player on earth, after the .......... -2004 Olympic Final (in Extra Time - Wambach Goal) -2007 World Cup Final (Marta missed penalty kick - loss to Germany) -2008 Olympic Final (Hope Solo stuffs her shots left and right like a brick wall, Carli Lloyd scores the winner in ET) -2011 World Cup Quarterfinal (Abby Wambach in the 122nd minute, Penalty Kick loss immediately after that) -2015 World Cup Round of 16 (Uspet loss to Australia who they were heavily favored against) -2016 Olympic Quarterfinal (missed penalty kick by Marta, who looked like she was going to die right afterwards) -2016 Olympic Semifinal (Heartbreaking penalty kick loss to Sweden) Seriously, this resume of torture is the complete 180 of Carli Lloyd's heroics in her career in big time matches. Marta is arguably the greatest individual player of all time, when not factoring in team success (championships). But until she wins that Gold, she can't be validated as the best of all time if you factor in team championships.
My bad, Twitter app has an automatic translation feature but I couldn't the English portion to appear. Tweet: "Out of the Olympic women's #Futebol final, Marta thanked the support of the crowd and promised to fight for #Bronze #BRA ⚽ "
Absolutely. Their crowd has turned out to watch them play, but of course, it took a major tournament for that to happen. The true measure of success is to see what a 2017 "Friendly" home crowd attendance looks like vs. a "Friendly" from 2015 at home.
Why non Brazil fans are so "concerned" about our team is beyond me... 😢❤ pic.twitter.com/0ApBB16InI— Seu Esporte (@SeuEsporteBR) August 17, 2016
