I feel like your one of the few people in this forum that is in touch with reality of what things are really going to be like during and after this is over. The only "value" that is going to come out of this is the "experience". But the so called infrastructure invests made in the country for the world cup like airports, freeways, and trains will "ficar só na promessa" as we would say in Brazil because there is no more time to invest in that. The stadiums will barely be finished in time which in reality is the only thing that counts anyways. But unfortunately the majority of the stadiums with the exception of Coritiba,Porto Alegre,Rio,BH, and São Paulo(well not really sure about that) will become white elephants. The reason for this is because the other cities either have teams that are in the inferior divisions of the Brazilian League or in worse cases like Manaus and Cuiabá, only participate in state leagues that only last around 4 months.

And this reduction in unemployment wouldn't have happened without the Olympics?

Itaquerao (meant to be the host stadium for SP) just broke ground 2 days ago. It should be ready 2-3 months before the WC starts.

It reminds me of some stadium at South Africa that was on the final stage of building while the WC had already started.

the situation is QUITE simple in Brazil.

there is a public biddings law that prevents corruption and overpriceing.

in cases of EMERGENCY, the bidding law can be avoided, and the government can hire companies without a propper bidding for smallest price.

thus, everything is postponet to the limit, so we can have ultra overpriced construction, with hundreds of millions extra cash going into pockets of politicians and companies.

the world doesnt need to worry. Its brazilians who have to worry, because all that taxpayer money will be lost.

Exacly. The World Cup will be perfect, but the brazilian people will heavily overpay.

    I believe in Santa.

really, WTorre was prepared to make the new Parque Antartica bigger... there was also the possibility of reforming the Pacaembu... but NOOOOO... all these problems for help Corinthians build its stadium!

here at Porto Alegre, Grêmio is building a UEFA standart stadium for 56 thousand people... and it wasnt even chosen for the World Cup!!! (and it is the most advanced of all stadiums being built in time for the Confederations Cup)

All the while, taxpayer money is being spent on dozens of public stadiums around the country!!!

Does this include built-in time for the inevitable delays which occur? I assume so as the article I read today said Corinthians stadium is scheduled to be completed in December 2013.

There was an interesting post regarding Itaquearo that I'll reference here but summarize below:

    1. The future owner of Corinthians stadium presented a 48,000 seat stadium proposal that FIFA denied
    2. Creative financing raised the budget to $430 million (USD), enough to be able to present a stadium with a seating capacity of 70,000 (temporarily, will be reduced after the WC)
    3. FIFA once again denied the proposal. Back to the drawing board and now the cost is $680 million (USD)
    4. The regional government won't front the costs and the owner refuses to pay for them as well...thus we're at a standstill

    Possible results:
    1. (Likely) São Paulo gives up the opening ceremony, opening game and a semi-final. The club builds a 48,000 seat stadium suitable for games up to the quarterfinal stage. Opening game and ceremony move to the National Stadium (Brasilia), Mineirao (Belo Horizonte) or Arena Fonte Nova (Salvador).
    2. (Possible) Regional government caves and puts up the necessary funds to fund the full project and São Paulo receives the opening game and ceremony.
    3. (Unlikely) Another stadium is chosen to host games in São Paulo up through the quarterfinal (i.e. Corinthians stadium isn't built and a smaller venue hosts the early round games)
    4. (Improbable) The stadium doesn't go through, no replacement is found and São Paulo doesn't host any games

We'll see if they can get their act together but I agree with those that say it'll probably get done but at a far more expensive level than it otherwise would have been (or needed to be) if the planning had been done properly.

The big problem in Brazil, just like it was in South Africa, will be transportation infrastructure. The stadiums will be ready and there will be plenty of hotels, but it looks like getting people from point A to point B is going to be the biggest difficulty, not surprising given the size of the country and its lack of a modern, world-class rail system.

FIFA could do a lot to alleviate transportation concerns by organizing group stage matches by city, so that most, if not all, of a given group's matches are in nearby cities. But they've never done that before, and it seems unlikely that they will see the light and do it for Brazil 2014.

I only decided to go to South Africa after the draw, when my country (the USA) ended up in a spot in the draw where all three of its group stage matches were in/near Johannesburg. Otherwise I would have stayed home due to the difficulty of moving around South Africa.

Yes they did, actually before the 1994 WC held in the USA, all group stages matches were held in nearby venues within the group that was defined to any team, and also as another issue it wasn`t necessary to have such big stadiums, which are now a set requirement, which enabled smaller countries with smaller cities to perform as hosts themselves.

That's an important concern. Brazil is huge and people won't be travelling by bus, car or train.
The government annouced huge investments in airport infrastructure yesterday, but who knows if it will be enough.

They kind of tried to do it in 1994, but not very well. Groups A & B were split between Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit with only Colombia and Cameroon having all three games in the two west coast cities; Groups C & D were split between Chicago, Boston, and Dallas; and groups E & F were split between New York, Washington, and Orlando, with only Italy, Norway, and Saudi Arabia having all their games in NY or DC. So out of 24 sets of supporters, only five didn't require at least one plane flight to see all three of their teams matches.

Its almost been a year since the last World Cup.

Im pretty sure there will be plenty of stories about how the World Cup has affected South Africa a year on from the event.

It might give a good indication on how the World Cup will impact on Brazil.

Didnt FIFA give a South Africa a massive loan to build the stadiums?
the repayment have forced high ticket prices at those venues and no one can afford to go to the games .So they have basically got a load of empty stadiums now .
