    ...........

    ..........
(Take that as a... no? Maybe?)

Brazil are confirmed for a pre-World Cup trip to the US from Feb 27 - Mar 5, playing England, Japan and the US in the SheBelieves Cup.

In January, Brazil had a 32-player training camp with 8 new call-ups, indicating how coach Vadão will approach the WWC. For the 17 Brazil-based squad members, it's a month-long camp. List: CONMEBOL.com (Archived), CBF (Archived)

Besides the four Silvas, this graphic is completely unhelpful because nobody refers to any of the players by these names.

I notice Barbara is back in goal for Brazil after her hand-fracture from some months ago. And she's in good form, judging from some saves she's made: for those who don't have time to watch the full match, I re-post here the highlights @Lechus7 had already posted on the friendlies thread:

The answer to your question from about 3 months ago seems to be a resounding: no! After that lonely win vs Japan at ToN 2018, Brazil record has been of 8 losses in the last 8 games (including 4 games following your question from January, 3 of them consisting in a disastrous SheBelieves campaign)!!!:eek::eek: Has ever any top 10 team done worse than that? I can't remember anything alike for sure.

To be fair, it has to be noticed that Brazil chose not to thrash hopeless low-rankings teams in their friendlies: all of these losses were vs top-10 teams, except this last one vs Spain, that's currently 13th (but they're sure a rising team, probably worthy a top-10 spot). Between August 2018 and now, Marta & Co. have lost vs: USA, Canada, England, France, England again, Japan, USA again and now Spain.

Maybe they can stop the bleeding tomorrow vs Scotland?

Hm, many of the players trace their line back to bastards then.
Silva or da Silva, means IIRC 'from the woods' and was the surname given in Portugal and Brasil when the father was 'unknown', except for in fishing village where a name I can't recall meaning 'from the sea' where instead used.

    Women's World Cup 2019:

    Formiga's World Cup record

2019 would be her 7th World Cup finals, more than any player before:
    - https://thewomensgame.com/news/brazilian-formiga-in-seventh-heaven-525321 (Archived)

"Formiga has featured at every World Cup since 1995 when as a 17-year-old she came off the bench.
"Her six previous World Cup's mean she shares the record for the most appearances with Homare Sawa, who led Japan to their World Cup triumph in 2011." - (The Women's Game)

Well, it could just mean the family lived in the woods before surnames became popular. I think we went over this with a UNC player whose Italian name means roast ham.

Silva is the seventh most common name in Luxembourg, ( and the most common non German name) so I’m not sure what that says about practices in that country other than Luxembourg was under both Roman and Iberian control once and is wooded. Brasil is, after all, named for a tree that was heavily lumbered in the colonial era.

These little traditions happen in English, too.

Fitzroy means “ son of the King”, and was appelated to illegitimate children of the English Monarchs.. Robert Fitzroy, first duke of Glouster, for instance, was the illegitimate child of Henry I of England.
The name Fitzhugh is also associated with illegitimate birth. It was considered preferable to be an illegitimate Royal than a commoner.
I’ll leave it to you to trace the first mention of the fitzgeralds, fitzgibbons, etc in the world.

Likewise, illegitimate children often took the name of the town or castle they were born in. In at least one case, spelling changed. The Duke of Wellington’s family used the name Wellesley. One illegitimate child ( Arthur) took the name Wesley. ( he later changed it to Wellesley)

In Spanish, Ferdinand and Isabela were both of the illegitimate house of Transtámara ( a location and castle in Castile) which was an illegitimate cadet branch of the Spanish house of Ivrea,( a town near Turin Italy) which was an illegitimate cadet branch of the Italian Ascarids (a dude named Ascar) of the Italian house of Burgundy ( a now French county- illegitimate descent from Hugh Capet)
That particular branch’s main problem wasn’t illegitimacy, but rather inbreeding that caused it to die out. Odd paradox.

the quasi title Hidalgo ( fijo de algo - son of somebody) was sometimes used for questionable descent of minor nobility in Spain. These folks were often dirt poor, so they are the ones that became delanteros and conquistadors . Sons of Somebody often weren’t, or were on the back side of the totem pole.

And it is thought the practice occurred in the Bible as well. Names like Barabbas ( son of the father in Aramaic) and Barnabas ( son of consolation- also Aramaic) are thought to skirt Hebrew patronymic practice for either legitimacy or biblical plot line.

Yes, it was Gambone, if I am not wrong. :giggle:

It's interesting that it looks like it comes from French, instead of from English (fitz = fils = son in French; roy = roi = king in French). :coffee:

Not surprising. Henry I was the fourth son of William the conqueror, and though the Normans were originally Danes or Norse, they assimilated linguistically rather quickly( to French. Their English came more slowly) Henry used the family name Beauclerc after the small town in Northumberland in which he was born. ( some say he was born in Selby, in Yorkshire), either of which which made him the first Norman King born in England. I don’t believe he ever learned English ( and English back then wasn’t what it is now). Henry IV was the first Norman English king to take the Royal oath in English, and it was up to Henry V to be the first to write in the adopted language.
Henry I died in his favorite hunting castle outside Rouen, after re-conquering Normandy.
William was also known as William the Bastard, being the son of Robert I of Normandy, who never married, and his mistress Herleva.

And Robert’s descent supposedly traces him back to Rollo, the supposed illegitimate son of Harald Finehair the Dane. At least he is associated with Göngu-Hrólfr the Dane and invaded France, became the first Count of Rouen and Duke of Normandy.

Göngu means walker. He was supposedly so big he could not find a horse big enough to ride. Danish horses were pretty small back then. Their descendants are Icelandic horses, a protected breed.

Estádio Rei Pelé & Rainha Marta: A group of Brazilians are reviving the campaign to rename the Maceió stadium to include Marta as well as Pelé – the change was approved in 2008 by Alagoas state government, but was vetoed by the then governor. (Report on marca.com) The stadium's nickname is Trapichão, which sounds like more of a rap music thing.

Following the money is excellent advice, and it can tell us exactly how far every World Cup team will get!
An odds calculator, the Soccerbot, puts Brazil in a 4-way tie for the last 2 quarterfinal places. Maybe they'll make it, if they pay more money to the $occerbot

    USA 2-1
    France 7-2
    Germany 11-2
    England 7-1
    Japan 14-1
    Netherlands 14-1
    Sweden 20-1
    Australia 20-1
    Brazil 20-1
    Canada 20-1
    Spain 25-1
"David Sumpter's Soccerbot model is up 2,000 percent and just released Women's World Cup 2019 picks"

It's a fascinating group – I expect it'll be close for 2nd place, and the 3rd-place team will go through. But 3 points may or may not be enough for that, on the evidence of 2015.

Vadao officially out now, and it sounds like Pia is pretty close to being officially in. Man, after coaching the US for a long time, she's really chomping at the bit for coaching both of the US' two biggest rivals, isn't she? X-D
