@PDG1978 @peterhrt @wm442433 and friends While we wait for the rest to move on, here's a little puzzle. Order the following players of the 69-70 season: -Cera, Ancheta, Brito, Israel -Deyna, Bremner, Cera, v Hanegem
I think I will have to leave you to your own research and analysis for such comparisons at the moment mate. I have thought of a few general ideas regarding players I might consider, and begun to look into the Brazilian competitions with a view to trying to get some guide as to how their World Cup stars were doing overall domestically (I assume we will take into account all local competitions in Brazil ending in September 1970, as well as obviously the RGP national league of 1969). But not much else in detail yet.... Deyna scores a nice goal away at St Etienne, and sets up Lubanski vs the Dutch in WC qualifying for the winning goal, I can mention, but those are things you will have picked up or known about I'd think anyway certainly. Lubanski does get awarded with the (or a) Polish Player of the Year award for 1970, with his impact in the Cup Winners Cup possibly even effecting that (not sure, but seems feasible....and I think it is calendar year not for 69/70 season if I'm not mistaken), but Deyna's stock does seem to be on the rise in general I'd say (taking a Polish Player award for 1969 it seems, as well as the Polish mention/nomination from their journalist to the East German magazine for that calendar year - both those moments I mention occurring during 1969 too of course, but then so too for example Lubanski's performance/excellent goal vs Rangers). I seem to recall Ancheta being well rated/regarded as far as the World Cup goes (maybe @comme felt he did well if I remember correctly?), but unfortunately Everyfourthyear.com doesn't seem accessible at the moment so his France Football ratings (and those of all other players except the 10 listed by Tom as the highest average rating scorers in another thread) might not referenceable currently, which would be kind of bad timing!
Re: the bolded part - I meant the Hungarian magazine Nepsport I think didn't I? The East German poll for 1969 as shown now by schwuppe does have Lubanski included in some teams of the year including the Polish one, and Deyna doesn't get such recognition. Lubanski had been mentioned in Nepsport as well as receiving votes in team of year polls in previous years already.
Last time I watched, Brito's mistake led to Italy's goal. BTW most of Brazil's goals could be accounted to Facchetti.
We're potentially going off topic but it's Clodoaldo who caused the goal with an attempted flick that created pressure out of nothing and gifted the Italians.
From the technical sheets of the newspaper As of the matches of the World Cup of 1970 and a quick glance at the chronicles, here are some brief comments to the most outstanding selections of the championship: Brazil: In the first match of the championship, Gerson, Jairzinho and Pelé are qualified with 3 (outstanding), with Clodoaldo, Tostao and Rivelino with 2 (notable). Gerson stands out above all, "who was the driver of the Brazilian team, omnipresent throughout the field despite his short trot." Before Gerson does not participate (something that is mentioned several times, giving it a great importance); plays Paulo Cesar who is qualified with a 3. Clodoaldo, Jairzinho and Pele had a 2. Outstanding match of Pele against Romania. Piazza, Paulo Cesar, Jairzinho and Tostao are qualified with a 2. However, Brito is suspended. In the quarterfinals, in the 4 to 2 to Peru, the best is Tostao, who is qualified with a 3. Carlos Alberto, Clodoaldo and Rivelino obtained a 2. In semifinals, outstanding for Jairzinho, notable for Carlos Alberto, Clodoaldo and Rivelino, On the contrary, Brito is again suspended. In the final match of the championship, Gerson has the exceptional rating of a 4, something very strange in the newspaper As, which gives an idea of his perfect performance. Carlos Alberto would take a 3, while Clodoaldo, Rivelino, Jairzinho, Tostao and Pelé obtained the rating of notable (2). In view of this, it seems that the best Brazilians of the World Cup were: • Gerson: For his extraordinary performances in the first and last matches. • Jairzinho: To score in all the matches and his usual high scores. • Pelé: Because he maintains his excellent level as he showed in this championship. • Clodoaldo, Rivelino and Tostao also maintained a very high level. • Carlos Alberto goes from less to more throughout the championship, finishing the same with a great match culminated with a magnificent goal. In advance of the events, these 7 players are serious candidates to be considered among the best of the 70 World Championship and, therefore, of the 69-70 season. We emphasize on the other hand that, according to the newspaper As, the performances of Piazza, Felix and Everaldo were acceptable, while that of Brito was loose with two suspended included. The time that Paulo César replaced Gerson did it in a formidable way. When I can, I will summarize Italy.
Based on various feedback, I am replacing Brito with Gerson. Tostao might join him, together with Pelé and Jairzinho, based on his bola de prata (Placar award).
Italy: Win the first game to Sweden by 1 to 0. 6 players are rated with 2 (notable): Albertosi, Burgnich, Domenghini, De Sisti, Riva and Rossatto. Against Uruguay, draw at 0. Albertosi, Burgnich, Rossatto and Riva repeat rating (2), like Boninsegna. In the last match of the first phase, poor draw at 0 against Israel. The best was Burgnich (2), while several players are qualified with 0: Domenghini, De Sisti, Mazzola, Boninsegna, Riva and Rivera. Therefore, as so many other times, disappointing first phase of Italy. In how many of final, thrashed to Mexico (3-1), with outstanding (3) for Domenghini, Riva and Rivera, notable (2) for Burgnich, Facchetti and De Sisti. The change of Rivera by Mazzola stands out, something that gave speed to the attack. Great match in the semifinals and victory in overtime against Germany; Burgnich, Rossatto and Boninsegna are qualified with a 3. Albertosi, Cera, Facchetti, De Sisti and Domenghini, 2. However, Riva is "rewarded" with a 0. In the final they are defeated by Brazil, getting Rossato and De Sisti a 2. Continuing the habit, Mazzola leaves the starter and does not do especially well, entering the end Rivera, who was not qualified by the short time he was in the field. According to these data, my nominations for the best players in this championship would be Burgnich and Rossato. Irregular many of them and simply disappointing Mazzola. As we all know, it was very controversial the substitution of Rivera, who had few minutes in this World Cup despite his importance in the quarterfinals. Germany: The championship begins with a short victory against Morocco. Grabowski is qualified with a 3 replacing Haller (0). Schultz, Beckenbauer and Seeler get a 2. Golead to Bulgaria (5-2). In this game, the one that makes a great match is Libuda, which is why it was qualified with a 3. Vogts, Schnellinger, Beckenbauer, Overath and Muller get a 2. In the 3 to 1 to Peru, Libuda repeats with a 3; Muller and Overath had the same qualification. For the newspaper As, the German performance against England was sensational, with an outstanding rating for Maier, Vogts, Schnellinger, Beckenbauer, Overath, Seeler and Grabowski. The critics think that the best was Beckenbauer. Another great match in the semifinals despite the fact that in the end Italy is imposed. Schultz, Beckenbauer and Overath are qualified with a 3. For Schnellinger, Grabowski and Seeler, 2. 0 for Maier ... Another 3 for Overath in the game for the third and fourth place. As considers Overath, perhaps, the best midfielder of the World Cup "with endless bellows to go up and down and a sense of the extraordinary pass". For Schnellinger, a 2. Of these high ratings, quite a few players could be nominated among the best: • Overath, with 4 outstanding performances. • Muller, for his 10 goals in 6 matches of the tournament. • Beckenbauer, for its continuous construction from the center of the field. • Schnellinger, who played Libero for his regularity. • Seeler for his great effort in a position more delayed than usual. • Grabowski and Libuda for some extraordinary performances.
Uruguay: One of its main figures, Rocha, was injured a few minutes after the debut of his national team, almost unprecedented in the championship. In the victory over Israel it is highlighted that the framework was "magnificently defended by Mazurkiewicz". Then, draw against Italy with remarkable performance of Mazurkiewicz and Matosas. Although they lose against Sweden, they talk about a great game of Mazurkiewicz, qualified with a 3 (outstanding). However, Matosas suspends ... In the quarterfinal match, the USSR is defeated by the minimum with a remarkable performance again by the goalkeeper and the famous defenses Matosas and Ancheta. The same qualification deserves these three players despite the defeat in the semifinals against Brazil. In game for the third and fourth place, new defeat, but once again Mazurkiewicz is evaluated with 3. Analyzing the technical files, it does not seem that Uruguay's role in the World Cup was too relevant; however, I understand that the fabulous performance of his goalkeeper was key in his final classification. Undoubtedly, in response to this, the only Uruguayan footballer that I would highlight is Mazurkiewicz. England: Start your journey in the World Cup with a short victory against Romania. Ace stands out as a great figure of the match (3) to Cooper ("made an extreme recital", "skillful dribble, will and bravery.) Physical resistance." Banks, Moore and Bobby Charlton are qualified with a 2, while Ball and Peters get a 0. Against Brazil, the chronicler highlights the fabulous exhibition by Banks (3), Moore and Peters are qualified with a 2, but Ball repeats suspense The first phase ends with a victory against Czechoslovakia Banks, Moore and Cooper return to be the best (2), but Bobby Chartlton ("a caricature of himself"), Peters and Bell, 0. In quarterfinals does not play Banks and England (Bonetti) fits three goals from Germany. The best classifieds would be Moore, Cooper and Peters. Therefore, for his merits in the World Cup, for the time being he would nominate Banks, Cooper and Moore.
Peru: In the first phase are Cubillas in the victory against Bulgaria, Perico Léon (3), Cubillas and Challe (2) in the 3 to 0 to Morocco, and Chumpitaz (3), Cubillas and Sotil (2) against Germany. Brazil wins a Peru quarter-final, highlighting all Cubillas (2). It seems clear that the most outstanding player of the Peruvian team and deserving of a nomination was Cubillas. USSR: Shesternev and Muntian are qualified with a 2 (notable) in all the games played by the Soviets in the World Cup. Bishovets, however, was much more irregular in his performances. I will nominate Shesternev and Muntian. Other selections: Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia disappoint. I can not find a reason to nominate any of his players. Belgium began to win easily in El Salvador, but then lost the other two games. The best player could have been Van Moer, but I do not see him as a candidate. Regarding Sweden, he highlighted the victory against Uruguay, but not with Israel. Kindvall scored two notable (2), but was not effective in the goal. Of the other teams, there is no specific player that can be put on the list. In summary: In an attempt to choose 23 players among all those who participated in the 1970 World Cup, and based on what the Como newspaper published, the final list is this: Brazil: Gerson, Jairzinho, Clodoaldo, Pelé, Rivelino, Tostao and Carlos Alberto. Italy: Burgnich and Rosato. Germany: Overath, Muller, Beckenbauer, Schnellinger, Seeler, Grabowski and Libuda. Uruguay: Mazurkiewicz. England: Banks, Cooper and Moore. Peru: Cubillas. USSR: Shesternev and Muntian.
Nice work posting these summaries. It helps to see extra viewpoints etc, although of course we already have the France Football ratings (which inevitably won't tally with the Spanish sources exactly - they use a difference scale too of 1-6) and any individual game can be seen on Footballia for example. I've read that sources in the USSR did determine Byshovets to be the team's best player of the World Cup actually, although I can see that Shesternyov is playing well and in an assured manner in a team that doesn't concede many goals at all, and he's also the Player of the Year for 1970 in the USSR overall. Byshovets' goals are really impressive to be fair I'd say too, but France Football do show some irregularity in ratings for him also (but at a good level between 3 out of 6 and 5 out of 6).
I would love to have the ratings of France Football. Could you tell me the link to access them? Thank you.
Byshovets: In the match against Mexico, he was rated 0. There is a clear chance of a goal that failed. In the 4 to 1 to Belgium was the best (3). To El Salvador, two goals and a rating of 2. In the quarterfinals, he is qualified with 1.
Sure, yeah - sorry I'd not realised you'd not seen them since I posted the link earlier but probably didn't make it clear enough and anyway it's not on the official 69/70 thread as we haven't kicked it off yet properly, so it could easily be missed on here (since I didn't make any summaries about the ratings like you are doing). It's a source which has been discussed and used quite a bit previously on this forum but some like you are quite new here so won't be aware of it: http://www.everyfourthyear.se/1970/ So you just need to click on each fixture and the grades out of 6 appear next to player names. For the Final itself a pitch is shown and you just click on the pitch (showing the names of each team on it) to reveal the ratings for that match. As you can see... Shesternyov - 4 vs Mexico, 5 vs Belgium, 4 vs El Salvador, 4 vs Uruguay Muntian - 4 vs Mexico, 5 vs Belgium, 4 vs El Salvador, 4 vs Uruguay Byshovets - 3 vs Mexico, 5 vs Belgium, 5 vs El Salvador, 4 vs Uruguay So they are all equal on average! Maybe the conclusions would not be completely removed from the Spanish ones though I don't know. It should be noted probably that France Football tended to be fairly generous with ratings in 1970, but still those are all pretty good overall I'd say (none of them were top 10 among all 1970 WC players though - Tom summarised before himself and I think a lot of Brazilians were present among the top 10). It should also be noted that not all the line-ups seem 100% accurate in terms of how they are shown there in terms of formation and player positions/roles (it is not a France Football website, but it's just that their grades are shown) - the games can be seen though anyway like I said. It might just have been on translated Russian Wikipedia that I saw a reference to Byshovets as best USSR player in the World Cup - I didn't check the link number 5 I don't think either yet to see what it contains: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Бышовец,_Анатолий_Фёдорович (If you copy that into Google you should be able to click on 'translate this page' I think - maybe you will even see it in Spanish!).
To navigate from the World Cup Final (which appears at first) to the group games, just click the right arrow in the middle section with the date of the match and goalscorers in it.
With the ratings of France Football I have made an analysis of approximately 60 of the most outstanding players of the World Championship of 1970, some of which I was discarding in successive phases. First, I calculated the average per game considering only the score obtained by each player who had played a minimum of 3 games and 270 minutes. Then, I added to these ratings a correction factor consisting of adding 10% for victory, discounting 10% for defeat and adding or discounting 1% for the difference in goals. Next, to this rating I applied another correction factor based on the result of their selection in the tournament (+1% to the quarterfinalists, + 2% to the semifinalists, + 3% to the finalist, + 5% to the winner). In total, 3 different averages. Observing the position of each player in each of them, I have established a classification based solely on statistics, without any subjective criteria, which is ordered as follows: 1.- Jairzinho 5,314 2.- Gerson 5,246 3.- Pelé 5,137 4.- Tostao 5,133 5.- Clodoaldo 5,131 6.- Rivelino 5,068 7.- Carlos Alberto 4,95 8.- Beckenbauer 4,628 9.- Cubillas 4,519 10.- Muller 4,413 11.- Byshovets 4,405 12.- Kavasashvili 4,362 13.- Van Moer 4,271 14.- Fuentes 4,25 15.- Moore 4,249 Charlton, B.4,249 17.- Mazurkiewicz 4,246 Mifflin 4,246 19.- Overath 4,225 Seeler 4,225 Grabowski 4,225 22.- Nunweiller 4,214 23.- Schnellinger 4,159 24.- Burgnich 4,155 Boninsegna 4,155 26.- Mazzola 4,143 27.- Albertosi 4,13 28.- Banks.- 4,114 29.- Shesternev 4,111 Muntian 4,111 31.- Cooper 4,053 32.- Larsson, Bo 4,051 33.- Maier 4,038 Vogts 4,038 Schulz 4,038 36.- Brito 4,032 37.- Matosas 4,024 38.- Chumpitaz 4,019 Challe 4,019 Sotil 4,019 41 Dobias 4,002
Nice work comme - there is also some discussion about World Cup ratings already in the main thread so maybe even worthwhile copying that over too? @Titanlux had provided some Spanish ratings and verdicts and I'd provided the link and instructions for viewing France Football ratings. EDIT - Ok, cool, that's very much done now I see too (maybe comme was already about to add those posts in even before my reminder).
This would be I guess my other useful post from the discussion thread relating to 1969/70, with some Chelsea match reports contained: The original post I referred to is not visible there, but it was my shortlist of 30 names and now I'm ready to convert that into my selection of 23 names as follows anyway.... My probable podium candidates (two rising European stars, albeit already having shown plenty in the 60s, joined by a Brazilian World Cup star who has also been in a good vein of scoring/general form in domestic football): Franz Beckenbauer Johan Cruyff Jairzinho My outside chance podium candidates: George Best Dragan Dzajic Gerd Muller My calls for other top 10 players (following the format of the posts I made in the other threads): Rivelino Pele Teofilo Cubillas Wlodzimierz Lubanski And also in approximate, but indefinite order, the other players I'm voting for within the 23: Luigi Riva Bobby Moore Tostao Kazimierz Deyna Wim van Hanegem Albert Shesternyov Carlos Alberto Torres Pedro Rocha Peter Osgood Gianni Rivera Wolfgang Overath Clodoaldo Gordon Banks Which leaves the remainder of those 30 names I came up with who can be my honourable mentions, as my calls for being among other prominent contenders for recognition outside of the 23 players I'm voting for: Ladislao Mazurkiewicz Rinus Israel Gunter Netzer Gerson Sandro Mazzola Anatoliy Byshovets Ove Kindvall
I will continue to provide information. Of the sensational work of WFHC, these were the best footballers in their posts in 1970: Mazurkiewicz, Carlos Alberto, Moore, Van Hanegem, Jairzinho, Gerson, Tostao and Muller. It would be a luxury to have the valuable opinions and contributions of Dearman !! Kicker World class: Second semester 1969: Beckenbauer, Overath, Schulz, Vogts First semester 1970: Beckenbauer, Muller, Overath, Schnellinger, Seeler, Vogts International class: Second semester 1969: Held, Hottges, Libuda, Maier, Muller, Netzer, Seeler First semester 1970: Grabowski, Held, Hottges, Libuda, Maier, Netzer, Schulz
As it happened in the previous season, we were not able to get any information about the votes of the correspondents of France Football. I can only contribute this image where the votes given by 23 of those correspondents are read badly enough. It is possible for me to read each one's comment. I put it here in case one of you has a better view than me and it helps you.
