If the objective is to reach a consensus or at least choose one by majority vote, we're not doing very well...
Its hard to chose a book because I don't know anything about the books. I suppose I could look at a review or something but, you know what I mean.
William Faulkner drank them all with his whiskey. Seriously- that's arguably the greatest American novel of the past 30 years. Enjoy.
OK, then. I'll take over the book club for this month. I have an exam tomorrow, so I will hold off until Friday before announcing. Then I'll buy the book and start reading over the weekend. Any particular objections to either one of my choices? I will consider all the books mentioned, but I'd be lieing if I said I'm not leaning towards those. August 1st is Tuesday!
I read Waiting the Barbarians when it came out, thought I'd discovered the next best-writer-in-the-world, read everything Coetzee wrote for the next decade, and came to the realization that Coetzee was way overhyped. Having said that, it has been 22-23 years since I read Waiting and it was very good and I'd love to be able to discuss it. So that would be my vote...
Well, Friday is an hour away and I might just buy the book tomorrow and get started. Waiting for the Barbarians it is then.
I have purchased my copy of "Waiting for the Barbarians". It is 156 pages long. We will read 5.2 pages per day and discuss it on August 31. Seriously though, let's get started and finish the first, fairly short (24 pages), Chapter by Friday, August 4th?
This kind of fell by way-side, but I thought I'd give a stab at bringing it back. I just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It is a new book (2006), only 241 pgs. in large print. I noticed a few people in the "What you're reading now" thread had read it, so maybe we can get a discussion going. I'll go ahead and start a thread, and call it the January book of the month. If anyone objects, a mod can change the title. Q
Looking for a book to read in my time between homework since this semester just started. I'll see if I can find it in my library and start on it without reading any reviews or anything. edit: sadly, it is not available in my area. For some strange reason, the audio recording is.. but its checked out. oh well. Can't join in for now.
Yeah, that's the one. Really good stuff, although some of it is too gruesome for me to read. Very entertaining though. I'll happily make it the February selection if y'all are up for it.
I'm Not Scared by Niccolo Ammaniti I had to read this for yr12 this year, and it was realy good. Quite a few soccer references too lol. Just a recomendation incase you'se finish Haunted and were looking for something else to read.
Fine with me, as I already have the book, and am meaning to get around to reading it sometime soon. I'm guessing it may not be for all tastes, though Hornby has yet to disappoint me. BTW, I believe the title is "A Long Way Down".
You are right about the title. My bad. As for Hornby and people's tastes, I think I'm in the minority of people who don't much care for him. But I know like 98% of the people on this board do, so I thought people might want to give this book a go.
