About CHI-ECU, El Grafico told that the 1st half ended 0-0 and remaining 12' Ecuador was beating Chile (RSSSF had all goals at 1st half instead ). Totally a poor display, deserving only one paragraph. BRA-PAR was rated as a good match (most of other games were considered poorly). Brandao, Da Guia & Caju are highly praised, also the brazilian forward line, all of them good with the ball, accurate at passing but not dangerous coming into the box area, interesting that they had been told by missing a real striker, having the 2nd CA goalscorer in Pirilo. Nothing is said about a specific FW, so I pick Tim for ideal XI since he was the most experienced. Paraguay was rated as a right fourth placed team, players with great enthusiasm and presence, notable intuition and agility. PER-CHI showed opposing styles, peruvians more skilled, elegant but more complicated in their play. Chile prefered a safety plan and simplicity of execution. Very smooth the peruvians, but faster the chileans. Perú in general played an average tournament from less to more, They didn't enthusiasm to public in their first games but also didn't suffer any disaster (vs Uruguay maybe?). URU-ARG, that match shows a crowd of people, even long queues (it was told that the resellers made a great business there ). Well, about the match, Uruguay was the previous favorite, but had little opposition in their previous games, meanwhile other teams played their best against Argentina (in El Grafico views). They said that the final wasn't a brilliant game with few moments of real class. The first 15' had a lighter possesion of the ball by Argentina, when Uruguay attacked more was still evident (according El Grafico) that argentine halves line hadn't been overflow, any of the offensive quintet were being organized in their play, but argies looked to have more capacity. They rate Perucca as MotM but also a surpringsinly poor performance by uruguayan halves-line, especially O.Varela (I read between the lines that in the other games they played great). In Uruguay the most dangerous in the offensive was the left side, mainly the way Porta was coming into play to Zapirain (most of his shots with few accuracy). Overall the 0-0 at first half seem like a payoff for Uruguay. In the 2nd half, Uruguay play with more impetuosity, at 47.5' a bad uruguayan pass came to Montañez whom tried to positioned better to his right foot closely followed by Chirimino, the emergency argentine LB tried to pass to Salomón but the ball was intercepted by Zapirain with great opportunism kicking a powerful and awesome accuracy shot that beat Gualco. After that Argentina was out of control and Uruguay owned the game but argentine halves line remained strong. After the 15' the parity of the game come back but the forwards failed. Into the 30' Uruguay had ball possesion again until the last 5' when argies lashed out but uruguayan defenders kicked the ball outside the field with the protest of the crowds until the final whistle. At the end, a deserved win by Uruguay.
Ah yes. I'm not sure if it is Juan or Titina. The one who was captain I think. Once I had found something (on internet), but I can't remember where, nor what it said - and it was a quite short article. I always wondered about him (maybe not the two were captain? A CH or RH, or both positions maybe?). All what I remember is that it was a particularly interesting player and that I had the feeling he was often ommited in the Peru All-time teams we can find here and there, but now I can't say why. So my request.
He's Segundo "Titina" Castillo by sure. I must admit that even being Peruvian I didn't know much about him until a few years ago and after studying him really seemed me to have been an amazing player that is generally unknown here (his nickname is usually recognized but few know anything more about him). According to what is documented he's easily the most prominent Peruvian centre-half of all-time.
Born in 1913, "Titina" Castillo was a small pyramid central half noted for his great positioning and sublime technique with the ball, being good defensively, he was awesome in the build-up, practically the playmaker in his teams. Among the best halves in two Copa Americas (1937 & 1939), his career with the NT ended at 25 years old, after he was signed to play in the argentine league. He returned to Perú when he was 30 (Perú didn't played intl matches until 1947). His last matches with the NT were as Right Half. As far as I know, there aren't peruvian sources digitally or any relevants from Uruguay or Argentina. I used to go to the National Library many years ago when it was located at Lima district. I saw there, old newspapers, magazines as Equipo (40-50s) Variedades (20-30s) and others modern mags, also there are a great El Grafico collection. All of that material is now in San Borja.
I remember where it was but I never went in its previous location. In the headquarters of San Borja I could read part of the collection of El Gráfico. You used that for your rankings of this serie, didn't you? I'm curious about how.

Celestes bring a 17 y.o youngster José García as Inside Right who is being talked greatly in his country... when Riephoff came in as Inside Left, Porta was moved to the right. The centreforward Atilio García was opportunist as always playing closer to the goal than his teammates. Uruguay rush things sometimes, when not Ecuador attacked with enthusiasm allowing Maspoli made some difficult saves. Last goal was scored by Aguayo, after a partial stop by Maspoli from a shot by centrehalf Alvarez (nothing is said about 2nd half) CHI - BOL 5:0 Chile played much better than its first game (even El Gráfico said than an illegal goal was allowed to Alcántara, after a shot hit the crossbar and then saved by Arraya). From the chilean forward the best was inside right, Clavero, whom scored a brilliant goal. The bolivian attacking quintet find in chilean backline a major barrier, these playing a man marking tactic (WM?) Day 5, 28.01.45 URU - COL 7:0 Uruguay trashed Colombia playing with absolute control of the game. Riephoff was subbed after he scored. An uruguayan goal was conceded to J.García after a crossing to Atilio who couldn't heading. It show a picture of the uruguayan back trio (GK+DF) saying that they have been playing a good tourney. The Uruguayan line-up was: Máspoli - Pini, Prado - Colture, O.Varela, Viana - Ortiz, Riephoff, A.García, Porta, Zapiraín. BRA - BOL 2:0 The brazilian team shows sparks of a great quality, then turned irresoluted and again the quality spark. They are very good with the ball but played slowly and lacking penetration. When Brazil decided to rush things at 2nd half, they scored two goals. Oberdan the keeper is playing a very good Copa. Da Guia is in its downfall, showing his quality partially, his partnet Norival played very good. Biguá is a hardworker half, the centrehalf played poor, meanwhile Jaime has a good tackling and passing. It shows a picture with the brazilian starting forward line: Tesourinho, Zizinho, Heleno, Ademir, Jorginho. The better praised are the central trio, especially Ademir for his great approaching to goal and powerful shot, also he's hardworking. Heleno is a skilled, elegant, good header but vigorous less striker, his replacement Servilio less subtle but more brave. Wingers not convinced to experts, meanwhile Zizinho is rated as hardworking and multi-role. (because of this I pick Tim as best brazilian in the previous Copa America)

Msioux, It is very good to see your list in the 1930s as I reviewed all of your lists from 1940s to 1980s and I found it is very useful. I have a point to discuss anyway. Roberto Porta is an outside-right is a new knowledge for me. He scored 16 goals in 18 games in 1938 as a winger position is an luxurious stats and you rank him in similar position for his 1940s years as an inside-left. Do you think what is his best position ?
When playing in Serie-A at mid 1930s, was still a right winger (also capped by azurri). When he returned to Uruguay at late 1930s started to played at inside forward, I don't know exactly when and how often. But, in the final of 1939 he played as winger. Maybe his peak was at early 1940s as inside left for Nacional, but he had a very consistent career at high level. A diabolic player, a great technician who drove crazy to his markers as winger and very inteligent with a superb passing skill and very strategic as inside forward.

As far as I know, for the late 1940s, two of the main SA countries: Brazil and Chile had been adopted the WM system. The other countries: Argentina, Uruguay, Peru and Paraguay mainly used the old 2-3-5 System. So, these lists still had the Pyramid System roles.
