    Best players 1957-59

Reviewing peruvian stats, I want to make some changes:

Right Back: Fleming down to mid ratings. Ismael Soria at the bottom. And Brush is out.

CenterBack: I name in, peruvian Jose Fernandez amongt 6th-8th position.

Left Back: Dante Rovai is out.

Right Half: Argentinian Sabino Bartoli named in instead Grimaldo.

Inside Right: argentinian Eugenio Calla instead Vides Mosquera.

Left Winger: I named out Borges, and named in paraguayan Ricardo Quiñonez amongt 3 last spot.

Some.great stuff going on here guys.Just to add a few anecdotes.River after the maquina in the forties developed two great teams in the fifties with some true greats.None greater than a Uruguayan hardly mentioned here as he fell out withbthe top brass in Uruguay in the late forties. It was said in Montevideo in 1950 after the Maracanazo that
SI IUGABA WALTER GOMEZ HABIA GOLEADA.
It was sung in the Monumental of half a decade in the days when 100,000 packed the place
LA GENTE YA NO COME POR VER A WALTER GOMEZ.
Its enough to say that Gomez was bought to replace Alfredo Di Stefano and that to this day the Uruguayan is probably more remembered by River fans for his glorious play.

    Uruguayan FW at 50s

    Thanks mate.

As you said, Walter Gomez was the best uruguayan player when WC-50 was played. I'm not so sure, but thought that he has played in all 5 forwards position at international level.

Gomez, maybe reached his peak between late-40s and early 50s.
Other famous uruguayan FW, Omar Miguez, reached his best at mid 50s. At least, in Copa America 1956 and also WC 1954.

Cubillas first season was in 1966 and could had 2 great seasons in that period. Not much to be named in a 60s all star team, IMO.

    BTW, great selections :)

Bolivia's best player, some argue better than Etcheverry or Platini Sanchez:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYd6fuokACQ"]Copa América - Bolivia Campea CA 1963 - YouTube[/ame]

He was the reason that we won the Copa America in 1963. He was our captain and won it for us at the age of of 37!!!!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Víctor_Ugarte

Another great bolivian player from this era was Blacut... although he may have been late 60s early 70s.

He went on to play in Germany for I believe Bayern Munich.

    Great work as usuall!

Just one correction: Exchange Bauer and Rui. Bauer was the CH and Rui was the RH for São Paulo FC.

    Some suggestions:

Dagoberto Moll: uruguayan with some really good years for Deportivo La Coruña in the beginning of the 50s.
    http://www.canaldeportivo.com/revista/revista9/articulo41/pagina42

José García: another uruguayan, was a regular starter for the NT until he was transferred for Bologna. He also had some good years in Europe.

    Thanks for your kind words!!!

I search for Sao Paulo line-ups from mid-40s to early 50s. But i don't find them.

Most sources from brazilian NT seems like they line up a mid like this:
BAUER - RUI - NORONHA (Sao Paulo's halves) usually interchanged with
    ELY - DANILO - BIGODE

In WC'50 Bauer joined the 2nd midline in the RHB role, being Danilo Alvim the attacking centrehalf.

BTW, i really like to find more info, about Jose Carlos Bauer and Sao Paulo line-ups

About the uruguayans, is unbelievable the depth of quality players they had in those years. Many of the players that weren't in the WC'50 squad, were stars in top leagues as the italian, spanish, argentinian & El Dorado. Even so, they weren't favorites to win the title. Top sides were Brazil, England, Italy & Argentine (withdrew).

From the IRs list, Coll could be named out, his best years were in the chilean league (maybe the best foreign player ever).

From the CFs list Rene Melendez could replaced Solano Patiño, but paraguayan was one of the stars in El Dorado.

Another option is named out Lopez Fretes to make room for "Loncha" Garcia.

Well, those formations are a little bit wrong. Bauer was always the center man in a line of 3. In a 3-2-5, than maybe he was a RHB in a line of only 2.

    Here some São Paulo line-ups:
    http://cacellain.com.br/blog/?p=15590

    http://cacellain.com.br/blog/?p=22656
Here you will see Rui as CB, Sastre as RH and Bauer as CH.

    http://www.saopaulofc.net/spfcpedia/grandes-idolos/
Here you will see Bauer in a list of the greatest volantes (DMs-CHs) of São Paulo FC history at the official site, by the side of players like Dino Sani, Toninho Cerezo and Mineiro.

Also, he was a really big player (some sites says 1,89m), the biotype for CB and anchor DM roles. I really can not see him as a side player in the midline.

About the uruguayans, they sure had a talented generation. No wonder they made a really hard game against one of the most talented generations of Brazil and won playing in Maracanã the 50'WC final.
Those names are just to create more difficulties in the elaboration of your lists. :D

    Early 50s

    Nice links!!!

So, if Bauer & Danilo were both CHs, the only explanation that they played together is that the team was playing something like 3-2-5, being both the two halves, playing similar roles.

I think Flavio Costa has been experimenting with advanced formations for that era (most SA teams used to play 2-3-5), so that's makes sense.

BTW, uruguayan Jose Garcia would be a nice option to be named in. I'll look for more El Dorado players. Note that most top players were acting in Colombian league in this period.

    Brazil
Well, for me it's something like this:

In a brazilian book about the history of the World Cups, PVC (Paulo Vinícius Coelho - famous soccer journalist in Brazil, with a passion for the history of team Formations) made this Formation for Brazil in the 50'WC.

As you can see, Bauer is a CB and Augusto a RSB.
So, with these players (Bauer and Augusto) out of their original positions (Bauer was a CH and Augusto was mainly a CB for Vasco da Gama) with their polyfunctional qualities, I think the team could change the positioning in the field during the game to something like this:

So, If needed, Flávio Costa could change the team formation from a 2-3-5 to a 3-2-5.

But, I have to emphasize one thing, this is just a theory I have.
The official formation was a regular 2-3-5 with Bauer as CB and Augusto as RSB.

That's very interesting formation you've got for Brazil WC50/

i've always thought Jair was playing in a more advance position than that ,,,

    Lima, Peru
Nice draws MB. I'll go for the 2nd one. Defensively closer to Magycal Magyars does in the 50s (Bauer in the Zakarias role)

I found only Guerin from 80s. True gems, but that's was a long time agooooo.
