My Vote has to go to Giuseppe Signori. He wouldn't even run up to the ball. He would just stand next to it and still get lots of power on it. Of all the years i watched Serie A, i've never seen him miss one.

Yeah - didn't he hit something like 49 out of 50 in his career?

Surely not number one but among the best of Bundesliga's history is Borussia Dortmund's longtime captain Michael Zorc. He hit 49 out of 57 penalties.

Mendieta is also excellent at penalties - he usually just places them beyond the keeper's reach without needing to resort to blasting them.

One miss - a save by Mark Crossley, so he never missed the target (no excuse for a professional footballer).

Shearer, if only for his PK against Germany in Euro '96

Thanks. I haven't been following his Boro career that closely.

My vote goes to Mendieta. If am not mistaken, in EURO/2000 he scored from the penalty spot which was his 41'st penalty goal.

I think when Marco Van Basten played with Milan he had a 94% penalty rate.

The three that stand out are Koeman,Mendieta and Le Tissier, different styles, but all phenomenal.

Shearer used to be great as well but he has lost his touch a bit.

I know Matt Le Tissier had an awesome record from the spot, but Johnny Hubbard, a South African who played for Rangers in the 1940s and 50s, would have had a comparable record.

Best penalty I've ever seen was one taken by the then Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper, Kevin "Pie-Man" Pressman, in a penalty shoot-out in the early/mid 1990s (can't remember who the opposition was). Left-footed, hit it like he was taking a goal kick, right into the top corner at about 100 miles per hour (just got his weight behind it I think). Pure class.

He gets my vote as well. PKs are mainly about overcoming the psychological pressures and Beppe Signori was at the top of his game back when Serie A was the toughest league in the world.

If Sacchi had actually subbed him in then he should have been the one taking that famous penalty for Italy in the WC'94 final instead of Baggio.

Yeah, Signori was the man at PK.

How about the great Eusebio, goalies hated when he took PKs because he struck them whcih such violence

I know that Simao from Benfica/Portugal has an acuracy rate of like 90% or something like that.
