Puck, you did a great job to combine all the stats for all players ...

However, do you see any correlation to what most people commonly talked of certain players at a particular WC?

    James,

I feel I'm right now not yet in a position to say something about it.

I'll try to answer this question, or say that I can't answer it, when I've finished this series...

Thanks for that. Great effort, as usual :). Why don't you include duels won stats however ? They can be considered as legitimate criterias as well to rank individual defensive performances IMHO. If you take them into account then a player like Laurent Blanc would appear very high, whereas his name doesn't appear anywhere in your ranking.

    Quick reply.

Dunga had less than 15 clearances. That is why he missed out. Generally, only few midfielders and almost no attackers met this criteria.

Blanc had less than 10 attempted tackles.

About duels won: as talked about earlier, I remember, it is a bit of a 'vague' and unclear concept (certainly next to other categories) and it is both an offensive and defensive criteria.

Opta doesn't categorize it among the defensive statistics section. Outdribbling an opponent is (in many occasions) also a duel won, so an offensive action. That are the two reasons. Hope you see the logic of this reasoning.

For me, there is no question that Blanc was a nice complement to Desailly - and vice versa - and both covered the others his weaknesses very well. It is a partnership, and that is the limitation of those statistics. As well as various intangibles (for example, the one applying pressure while the other wins the tackle and boosts his percentage...)

Thanks mate. Of course duels won remain quite a vague concept that includes both offense and defense but in that particular case, the fact 3 out of the 5 players with the highest duels won % and 4 out of the 9 players with the highest number of duels won are French defenders is a good explanation of why the French backline was so good in that WC IMHO,

If I'm finished with all editions I'll make such ladder for each World Cup, for the defenders of the last eight teams.

This is what Opta says about duels

    http://www.optasportspro.com/es/acerca-de/blog-optapro/posts/2012/optapro's-event-definitions.aspx

But in their tool they did not put it under the defense category, which is the reason why I dropped it (and this categorization makes sense).

Do you have a source data file for all of these? ie a spreadsheet which has the data you used to calculate these?

Yes. I made one to aid me with this.

If you see an error let me know. I think it is correct.

    ---------------------------------------

Regarding the omission of the French CB pair in this overview: both had less as 10 attempted tackles. Thuram attempted eight in 660 minutes. Gallas 7 in 660 minutes. Both met (by a large margin) the 15 clearances condition.

That is why they missed out. Reason for this 10 tackles condition is to apply a bit more certainty and reliability in the data.

No, I'm not saying it is wrong. Just would be interesting to see all the raw data if you have extracted it from the Opta site.

Interesting to see some "unknow" players topping some list.
I'd like to know some countryman opinions.

    Superb job, Puck

The context is important, I think.

Gusin met all criteria but played only 281 of the 480 minutes (Ukraine played 5 games + 30 minutes of extra time). He wasn't a starter in all games.

Materazzi was, as known, used as replacement when Nesta caught an injury during the tournament. He played 363 of the 690 minutes. And was red carded plus not a good reputation.

Ayala was seen as one of the best defenders of the tournament and made the all-star team but eventually his journey ended at the quarter-finals (5 games). Same for the Brazilian pair (Lucio + Juan).

It is understandable that captain & winner Cannavaro took the spotlights. Zidane won the Golden Ball with 2012 points, Cannavaro was second with 1977 points. Pirlo was third on a large distance, 715 points. Of course, he won the 2006 Ballon d'Or, which was largely based on the same World Cup.
Purely rated as a defender, the Opta statistics makes the reputation credible, I think.

Think it is important to keep these contextual things in mind but I share your view that some relatively unknown names look very good (Bruno Pezzey for example).

At the end of this, I'll also make a ladder with duels won percentage, absolute number of duels won and number of successful passes (which measures involvement in the game).

I'll skip the pass accuracy because that is a bit deceptive; then Schwarzenbeck looks suddenly nearly as good as Beckenbauer and other Italian defenders better as Baresi. I think in case of defenders it can be an deceptive statistic and is more valuable for mid-fielders and forwards.

I'll also skip the attempted number of shots because in case of defenders it doesn't exceed the 10 shots (also in case of very offensive ones), which makes it an unreliable measurement.

    Thanks for your answer, mate.

The conditions you made for the stats looks good. I personally would add two (one or another) conditions to make sure, the player was a starter, for a final result:
    * A nominee must play more than 50% of #games for a finalist (f.e in 2006 4/7 matches, in 1954 3/5 matches, etc.)
    * A nominee must play more than 60% of full minutes his team disputed.

This left the likes of Gusin or Materazzi out.

btw, Pezzey was among the top defenders in late 70 - early 80s, i think.

I think you're talking bollocks. Why would you leave Materazzi out of the WC06 stats, when he was one of its leading protagonists?

You could use the pass accuracy in the opposite half instead.

It depends on how you interpret it but if it is interpreted as 'passing skill' in general or 'passing proficiency', 'passing accuracy' etc. then I think it can be misleading for defenders.

    Some examples involving cultured sweepers:

    Passing accuracy in opponents half

    1974 World Cup:
    Beckenbauer (GER) 83.7%
    Schwarzenbeck (GER) 83.0%

    1978 World Cup:
    Galvan (ARG) 83.6%
    Tarantini (ARG) 76.0%
    Passarella (ARG) 71.7%

    1982 World Cup:
    Cabrini (ITA) 77.5%
    Gentile (ITA) 72.0%
    Collovati (ITA) 59.2%
    Scirea (ITA) 57.7%
    Bergomi (ITA) 57.1%

    1990 World Cup:
    De Agostini (ITA) 82.9%
    Vierchowod (ITA) 76.7%
    Maldini (ITA) 75.0%
    Ferrara (ITA) 71.4%
    Bergomi (ITA) 69.6%
    Baresi (ITA) 68.5%
    Ferri (ITA) 67.2%

    1998 World Cup:
    Desailly (FRA 81.0%
    Blanc (FRA) 73.3%
    Thuram (FRA) 72.7%
    Lizerazu (FRA) 72.6%

Demonstrates how it can be misleading. Desailly over Blanc in ability to play accurate passes? Really? The passes are probably devoid of risk in case of Desailly but what does this stat add for defenders?

This 'weakness' mentioned above is less apparent in case of midfielders. For midfielders it has more added value.

Of course, I already said/clarified this on the first page....
