Joya got the start in a Copa MX game this week; Necaxa lost 5-2 to Zacatepec.

He did okay in the little time he played. I forgot that he can play on the wing.

Benji hasn't played since Feb 23, Necaxa's 2nd to last group game in the Copa, but the team is now in the semifinals against Cruz Azul tomorrow.

Benji appears to be out of contract. It doesn't look like he's at either Necaxa or Santos Laguna.

Do you think he has much interest from MLS teams?

No idea. It's not like there aren't a few older mediocre players who can be replace though. He did train with Colorado and Seattle in the past.

it's possible that he isn't even mediocre by MLS standards.

2 years ago I would probably agree but he has matured and played a lot more pro games. At age 22, he would at least be somebody that could come off the bench for an MLS club.

he's played 270 minutes since leaving Chicago, at the esteemed levels of Ascenso MX and Copa MX. he wasn't exactly effective two years ago and doesn't have extreme youth on his side. Chicago had him around, Colorado and Seattle had him in camp, no one wanted him.

NASL or USL make a lot more sense.

I think job #1 for SKC and Benji is to figure out what his long-term position is.

He looked OK as a possession/attacking mid with the U23s at Toulon and with the U20s. Seems to be able to do a little of everything, but not a lot of anything, which is probably why he has bounced around.

Joined Irapuato in Liga Premier, the third tier of Mexico. There are three other Yanks at Irapuato.

Released by Oakland Roots today because of this:

His full name is Héctor Benjamín Joya Jiménez, if that tweet is confusing.

Damn, wearing a mask at your mug shot is many layers of trouble. Went to the Roots' inaugural game and Benji played well. Jack McInirny (sp?) also rose from the dead to score a brace. Hoping they make some real progress and good on them for dumping a guy who creeps on children.
