Bomb under Belgian Jupiler League. Belgian top clubs gathered today in Eindhoven with Dutch clubs about the BeNeLiga. https://www.vi.nl/nieuws/discussie-beneliga-nieuw-leven-ingeblazen "Achter de schermen is oriënterend gesproken over een Belgisch-Nederlandse voetbalcompetitie. Dinsdag is in het Philips Stadion een vergadering geweest met tien clubs en de Nederlandse en Belgische voetbalbond. Bij het overleg waren vertegenwoordigers aanwezig van Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, AZ, Vitesse, FC Utrecht, Club Brugge, Standard Luik, Anderlecht en RC Genk. AA Gent was verhinderd. Voor het eerst waren ook de bonden aanwezig nadat een aantal clubs eerder al om tafel had gezeten voor verkennende gesprekken." Behind the scenes, an exploratory discussion was held about a Belgian-Dutch football competition. On Tuesday a meeting was held in the Philips Stadium with ten clubs and the Dutch and Belgian football associations. Representatives from Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, AZ, Vitesse, FC Utrecht, Club Brugge, Standard Luik, Anderlecht and RC Genk were present at the meeting. AA Gent was prevented. The unions were also present for the first time after a number of clubs had already sat down for exploratory talks.
https://www.consultancy.nl/nieuws/29327/monitor-deloitte-en-knvb-praten-clubs-bij-over-beneliga According to Deloitte the BeNeLiga in potential is significantly value enhancing.
Not everybody is enthusiastic about it. This Belgian is against it. https://sportmagazine.knack.be/spor...-opinion-1611771.html?cookie_check=1594557713

The Eredivisie's deal with Murdoch runs until the 2024/25 season. In Belgium a new TV deal was made which also runs until the 2024/25 season. It's a 5 year deal instead of the usual 3 years and it was struck, late, once Deloitte's 3rd BeNe League study was complete (one of the last "hurdles", the rights holders, were also part of that 3rd phase). With the end dates of both TV deals harmonized, might we see the creation of the BeNe League in 2025? UEFA once promised Holland and Belgium to let both of them keep all their European spots after joining forces. Yet that was back when the women's BeNe League was created (with an experimental format that was supposed to evolve over time) and Platini had sway within UEFA. The offer was for the men's game but I can't say if they would have made good on their promise (doesn't matter any longer, need to know what's on the table now).
10 spots for an 18 team league would be too many, but if they made it a 20 team league.. maybe. But that still seems high.
The experimental format of the woman's BeNe League had initially a Red and Orange league. The first half of the season teams would compete in their respective national competitions and in the second half both Holland's and Belgium's top four teams would face each other. For the men's game no details were given. Probably they based their offer on the women's BeNe League format (still that format was intended to evolve to a single top tier league and it did ahead of time).
https://nos.nl/artikel/2345651-voet...ga-clubs-gaan-voor-tien-europese-tickets.html Plenty of info in the article. As I thought, we might see the creation of the BeNe League in 2025. Clubs from Holland and Belgium are expected to ask UEFA to let both of them keep all their European spots after joining forces (cfr. Balkan countries or Ireland). Tomorrow they'll vote on this issue and likely will go ahead with the 4th phase of the BeNe League study.
What was decided today: - a concrete proposal will be finalized by the end of this year (including a detailed revenue forecast) - clubs that miss out on the BeNe League will be compensated and all plans will be discussed with these clubs - UEFA will be consulted (including about the European spots, 5 each, same as the current situation) ... https://www.telegraaf.nl/sport/2107...clubs-leggen-be-ne-liga-plannen-voor-aan-uefa
Youthful fervor skewing perception of the Eredivisie's history? Maybe I'm mistaken but wasn't the Eredivisie founded after a merger of smaller (regional) competitions. Only 64 years of history, a neophyte really, while the Belgian league was the first on the continent, over 125 years of history. For the far less historied Eredivisie the BeNe League is another merger. The Dutch being neophobic, luddites, laggards, ... as is their tradition.
Yeah, everything happens 25 years later in the Netherlands is the saying. And we like to "look the cat out of the tree" first.
That's nonsense. We were (one of) the first European country to semi-legalize cannabis, abortion, gay marriage. Also the third in the world with representative government and pretty early with universal suffrage (not like Switzerland that waited until 1971 when women could vote). There is a point to make though that the Industrial Revolution arrived late in Holland (but definitely not the IT and automation revolution, or the closing of the coal mines) and there is a more conservative Zeitgeist since 2001.
This part: „In België gelooft men meer in het theoretische model en het potentieel”, zegt Croonen. „In Nederland heeft men meer: interessant, het kan wel, maar kunnen we dat allemaal concreter krijgen?” Fits into the pragmatic, mercantile (waiting for the numbers) and anti-ideological tradition. The organicist tradition of the elites. With scepticism to "vision" ('vision is an elephant', said our PM), theoretical models or ideology. http://rozenbergquarterly.com/merij...s-of-the-swing-tothe-right-in-dutch-politics/ Voltaire said: "canard, canaux, canaille!"
UEFA wants to slash in the tickets for Holland and Belgium. https://www.telegraaf.nl/sport/1139443162/be-ne-liga-verder-weg-dan-ooit So they can give even more to others...
The UEFA is using the population argument https://www.reddit.com/r/Eredivisie/comments/j6yzej/de_telegraaf_beneliga_far_away_as_uefa_boss/
That's a non-argument. IIRC our clubs said they wouldn't go ahead if UEFA wants Holland and Belgium to give up 5 spots.
Maybe it's an idea to first start with a cup tournament. Some countries as England and France until recently have after all two cup tournaments.
How about this as an idea. Keep both leagues to have the max UEFA spots, but let the top 5 play an overall BeNed champions round and thus keep all the national titles intact.
Just think about it to add Scotland's Celtic and Glasgow Rangers to it and downscale the Eredivisie to 15 clubs to make room. That would make for some epic interesting matches.
