I found recently a source with all top fives of the Belgian Golden Shoe award since 1954. Furthermore, I found the complete rankings since 1988 onwards. I will post these in stages.

The Belgian Golden Shoe is a prize that is awarded for the best individual performance in a calendar-year (as opposed to a newer, and also smaller, Belgian prize, the 'Belgian footballer of the year' award, which is counter-intuitively awarded for the best performance in a season; the greatest procedural difference is that for the newer prize only players are eligible to vote, including Belgian footballers playing abroad).

The procedure changed over the years. I first call the unchanged features over the years:

    • All players who are playing in Belgium, including foreign players, are eligible for the award.
    • Players, referees, former footballers, managers, officials and journalists are allowed to vote. The proportion of these groups however changed over the years (chairman of clubs are ineligible since 1995).
    Changed features:

    • In the first three editions (1954-1956), a former winner was ineligible to win the award again. In hindsight, this deprived Rik Coppens of two Golden Shoe opportunities (also in his own view).
    • From 1970 onwards the voting-procedure consists of two rounds. The eligible voters vote one time in the end of June and one time in the end of December. This to make sure that the first half of the year is not 'forgotten'.

The instigator of the award, journalist Charles Baete, researched between 1947 and 1953 who deserved a "football-Oscar". After 1953 he came with the idea to organise a vote among stakeholders; the award was born.

His names between 1947 and 1953 (these are not 'official' Golden Shoes):

1947: Jules Henriet (midfielder/defender, Sporting Charleroi) and Torke Lemberechts (attacker/right winger, KV Mechelen).
1948: Pol Anoul (attacker, RFC Liège).
1949: "the complete Belgian national team" (Red Devils)
1950: Jef Mermans (attacker, RSC Anderlecht)
1951: Rik Coppens (attacker, Beerschot VAC)
1952: Louis Carré (defender, RFC Liège)
1953: Vic Mees (midfielder, FC Antwerp)

Very good info ... eventhough not many interest in such a league ...

It's very different VIEW that Belgium "golden shoes" are for "best player" rather than topscorer like all other leagues! Why don;t you (if possible) to list out both side by side: 10 best players and 10 topscorer yearly!

    I have.

I am also interested in Portugese football and Scottish football (but I have no info about these leagues; Scotland doesn't have such rankings isn't it?).

Of course, in the past these small leagues were somewhat stronger than nowadays.

I have also incomplete info about the ratings of Dutch players from 1984 onwards (I don't own all volumes of the magazine who publish this). I'll post this too when I have them complete.

By the way: the Belgian golden shoe existed earlier than the European golden shoe or Premier League golden shoe. Also the Dutch golden shoe is awarded for the best player rather than the topscorer. But at your request, I will also post the topscorers and their position in the top 5 (if applicable).

    Thank you, good info.

Belgian league might be underrated, because most people don't know that it was among the best in Europe during some stretches.

Also in the 'big money' era there are some quite interesting facts, such as that Vincent Kompany is one of the youngest recipients of the Golden Shoe with also the largest difference with the number two in history (second largest difference has Preud'homme in 1987)... But I'll come to that later on (I'm a huge fan of Kompany by the way, very good defender with also average ball skills; yesterday he received an incredibly difficult ball of side-back Gael Clichy and controlled it with his chest and feet perfectly).

    1990 - Jan Ceulemans
