Finally listened to the show, and yeah, Eddie seems to be gone. At the end they talk about Kinnear showing up for the Montreal game, and the wink wink nudge nudge between Miguel and the host seems imply that Miguel has more info to spill than just that Eddie is leaving. Aaargh... the off-season moves are going to kill me this year.
Well, if he ended up in Houston, that wouldn't be too bad. They could loan him back to us Or, it would be a very easy trip to go watch him play. If that does happen, it will be interesting to see how the finances work out.
What are the odds the finances come out at all? I mean, other than MLS salaries next year, I don't see much info regarding club finances. This whole Div II reorganization has offered some insight regarding club costs, as $200k is widely discussed as a typical travel cost, but in general we're sort of left guessing. [See Inside Minnesota Soccer blog for some expense figures] PS - I poked around the AISD site and found the Aztex stadium contract. Its fairly detailed, but I will refrain from posting the link. I'm not sure how the front office would appreciate it. PPS - I am oddly interested in club finances because I want to see the Aztex be successful and self-sustaining. While its not my direct financial concern (thanks Phil!), it would be nice to know that it can be made to work in Austin without a benefactor owner.
I decided to bump this thread just for the sake of posting news relating to the Aztex. From Nick Barbaro: Austin Chronicle Soccer Watch - Aztex Back in 2012 From Chris Nee: Two Footed Tackle: The Return of the Austin Aztex
New Austin Aztex soccer team debuts in 2012 This one has an interesting comment. Never heard of "Paul Danglish".
I didn't know Dalglish was working in Austin until I looked at his Wikipedia page just now. If indeed he is to be the coach, I think he's a great choice. He's got playing or coaching experience at three or four levels of the U.S. soccer pyramid. He's not long out of his playing years, either. Do we think he could be a player-coach, as one of our over-23 players?
For those who haven't yet seen the movie, there will be a Austin Premiere of Rise & Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story on November 3. The movie starts at 7:30pm - 9:00pm at the AMC Barton Creek Square 14 on 2901 Capital Of Texas Hwy. More info and RSVP on the facebook page.
Not Aztex related , but it deals with lower division soccer in Texas: The Texas Lower Division Shuffle: And You Will Know Us By the Trail of the Debt
Weird article. Not just because of the errors, but weird that someone in the UK would know this much about 4th division soccer in the RGV (or find reason to write about it).
I'm pretty sure that the author of that particular post, Elliott Turner, lives in South Texas, in the Valley.
The website is based in the UK. The author, Elliott Turner, is from Texas. Regardless of the errors, he does have a point on the gap level of soccer divisions in this country. Particularly when places like Laredo, Brownsville/McAllen and El Paso can build up local area rivalries. But the travel distances and lack of stability of teams and leagues makes it difficult to sustain it.
I think, regarding RGV, the travel distance is the one thing that non-Americans don't get. They just can't wrap their brains around the idea that Texas is the size of France (and, therefore, the whole US is bigger than all of Europe). I mean, seriously, would France try to run a 4th division league that's nation-wide? For a 4th division team to survive, they need to have 8 teams all in the valley or up along the coast. The reason they don't survive is that there still isn't the demand or desire or interest for it.
Couldn't find anything in the Statesman about the new hire. Can anyone else? But, of course, Nick is on the ball.
Not to drag this too far off topic, but... Furthermore, I don't see the financial point in operating a lower level team like RGV. Without any reasonable form of pro/rel, I don't see the opportunity to grow a team naturally from a few hundred, to a few thousand, to the 15-25k you'd want to have a really successful, thriving top-tier club. There's no doubt that Austin could support a team to the tune of 15k a match for 15-20 home games, but who knows how you'd ever develop a club to that point paying the gate keeper at each level.
If you can stomach it, The Best Soccer Show interviewed Phil Rawlins about the prospects of Orlando City S.C. moving to MLS: http://nasn.tv/2011/the-best-soccer-show-episode-16/
I'll toss this in the "any publicity is good publicity" box and share this article from the statesman: http://www.statesman.com/news/local...ing-soccer-2118667.html?cxtype=rss_news_36716 Hopefully the team can successfully work with the district and come to an agreement on noise rules that won't diminish the team's ability to provide a good atmosphere for soccer.
What time do these people think their kids ought to be in bed? This reminds me of people who buy condos on 6th street then complain about the noise. House Park has been there since 1939. The good news is it sounds like House Park is a done deal.
