Do you have authors you like for fiction and nonfiction? In elementary school I read Killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan about students who kidnap their strict English teacher and he ends up dead. I liked the book. Protagonist Susan McConnell, a good girl, joining a plot to do something bad makes the book interesting. Mr. Griffin dies early in the book and you read about the cover-up. Lois Duncan wrote a nonfiction book about investigating who murdered her daughter. I haven't read that book.
