Champions League Salzburg 3 - 0 Shkëndija Red Bull earns a convincing home win without conceding any away goals. Well positioned to advance. The loser will drop into the Europa League. Incidentally, Sturm Graz also dropped into the Europa League after their Champions League qualifying loss to Ajax. They're paired with AEK Larnaca of Cyprus in the third qualifying round.
Europa League Sturm Graz 0 - 2 AEK Larnaca Besiktas 1 - 0 LASK Slovan Bratislava 2 - 1 Rapid Wien All three Austrian clubs lost. Sturm is in bad shape, but narrow away losses by LASK and Rapid leave them with a chance to advance.
Champions League Shkëndija 0 - 1 Salzburg Salzburg advances 4-0 on aggregate. Next opponent is Crvena Zvezda, a.k.a. Red Star Belgrade of Serbia, which needed extra time to advance today.
Europa League AEK Larnaca 5 - 0 Sturm Graz LASK 2 - 1 Besiktas Rapid Wien 4 - 0 Slovan Bratislava After losing its first Champions League tie 5-1 to Ajax, Sturm crashed out hard from the Europa League as well. This one was even worse, 7-0 on aggregate to AEK Larnaca. Gotta feel bad for LASK, which had a very respectable showing. The team from Linz were up 2-0 and on their way to ousting Besiktas when the Turkish club scored a crucial away goal in the 90th minute with their only shot on target. Rapid is the only Austrian club to advance. A convincing home win reversed a loss in the away match and sent them through.
Champions League Red Star Belgrade 0 - 0 Salzburg A draw away is good, but no away goals. Need to win at home now to advance.
Europa League Rapid Wien 3 - 1 Steaua Bucharest Good result at home, somewhat tarnished by surrendering an away goal and red card to Berisha.
Salzburg 2-2 Red Star Belgrade Salzburg blew a 2-0 lead and let Red Star Belgrade advance on away goals. Salzburg had way more shots (26 to 8), shots on target (10 to 3), and corner kicks (11 to 1). https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsl...ound=2000979/match=2025301/index.html?iv=true has information. Red Star Belgrade reached the Group Stage of the top competition for the first time since the 1991-1992 European Cup.
Salzburg dominated the match and were in control but gave up two goals about a minute apart halfway through the second half. Very disappointing. This has not been a good year for Austrian teams in Europe.
Europa League Steaua Bucharest 2 - 1 Rapid Wien Rapid was down 2-0 at the half and losing the tie on away goals. Then Sonnleitner got the crucial away goal in the 63rd minute to send Rapid through 4-3 on aggregate.
Europa League Rapid Wien 2 - 0 Spartak Moscow Leipzig 2 - 3 Salzburg Rapid leads Group G after a good win at home. Villareal and Rangers tied in the other group match. Salzburg earned a wonderful away win over their Red Bull brethren in Leipzig. Celtic beat Rosenborg to join Salzburg atop Group B. Great start to the Europa League group stage for the two remaining Bundesliga teams. Maybe they can salvage something of what has been a poor European competition so far for Austria.
Europa League Salzburg 3 - 1 Celtic Rangers 3 - 1 Rapid Wien It was Austria vs Scotland today in the Europa League. The home teams won by identical 3-1 scores. Salzburg now leads Group B with 6 points, while Rapid sits second in Group G with 3 points.
Europa League Salzburg 3 - 0 Rosenborg Villareal 5 - 0 Rapid Wien Salzburg maintained its perfect record to lead Group B. Rapid lost big to Villareal and fell to third place in Group G--but only two points behind Rangers and Villareal.
Europa League Rosenborg 2 - 5 Salzburg Rapid Wien 0 - 0 Villareal Salzburg maintains a perfect record with a nice win at Rosenborg. Now leading Group B by 6 points and pretty much have first place wrapped up. Rapid could only manage a draw at home, but after losing 5-0 at Villareal a couple weeks ago, they must be somewhat satisfied with the result. However, Rapid now sits last in a tight Group G.
Europa League Salzburg 1 - 0 Leipzig Spartak Moscow 1 - 2 Rapid Wien Salzburg continued its perfect record to secure first place in Group B. And in beating Red Bull brothers Leipzig for a second time, the Austrians sent the Germans into third place and on the brink of being eliminated. Rapid came up with a huge win in Moscow to move from fourth to second place in Group G. The group is tightly packed, but a draw at home against Celtic on the final match day would be enough to secure advancement from the group.
Europa League Celtic 1 - 2 Salzburg Rapid Wien 1 - 0 Rangers It was Austria vs Scotland again this round, and the Bundesliga clubs came out on top. Salzburg finished Group B play with a perfect 18 points. Rapid only needed a draw to advance but finished tied with group winners Villarreal on points with the win. Second place in Group G on goal difference is enough to move on.
Round of 32 draw today. Salzburg will face Club Brugge. Two of the more beautiful cities in Europe. I think Salzburg can prevail here. Rapid Wien drew Inter Milan. Rapid has had a poor Bundesliga season, so their Europa League success is surprising. But I’m afraid this will be the end of the campaign.
Europa League Club Brugge 2 - 1 Salzburg Rapid Wien 0 - 1 Inter Milan Both Austrian teams lost. Tough coming back from the winter break to face two teams that have been involved in league play. Salzburg got a valuable away goal and can overturn the first leg's result. Rapid is in a very difficult spot losing the home match. Not expecting them to advance.
Europa League Salzburg 4 - 0 Club Brugge Inter Milan 4 - 0 Rapid Wien Salzburg did manage to overcome the loss in Bruges with a convincing home win to advance. And as expected, Rapid was again overmatched versus Inter. So Salzburg is again the last remaining Austrian club alive in European competition. On to the round of 16...
Europa League Napoli 3 - 0 Salzburg This result is going to be very hard to overturn in the return leg. Would have been nice to come home with at least an away goal. But the match wasn't as lopsided as the score would indicate. Salzburg actually had more shots on goal than Napoli (6-5) and the teams were even in total shots with 15.
Europa League Salzburg 3 - 1 Napoli Napoli advances 4-3. The away goal was the difference. But it really wasn’t that close, as Napoli scored early in this one, meaning Salzburg needed five goals to advance. Still a respectable result overall, but the Austrians are no longer represented in Europe.
