Salzburg is the four-time defending cup holder and the team to beat... The first round saw St. Pölten (Bundesliga) as well as Wattens, Wiener Neustadt, and Floridsdorfer AC (all Erste Liga) exit the competition. Next round will be in September. Round 1 ASK Ebreichsdorf 0 - 0* Austria Wien ASKÖ Oedt 3 - 1 ATSV Stadl Paura Kalsdorf 0 - 2 Neusiedl am See Parndorf 2 - 1 First Vienna FC SC Weiz 2 - 1 SV Lafnitz St. Johann 0 - 1 Kapfenberger SV Seekirchen 1 - 2 Grödig Vorwärts Steyr 1 - 4 Wacker Innsbruck Vöcklamarkt 7 - 0 Wörgl Amstetten 1 - 0 Wiener Neustadt Bad Sauerbrunn 0 - 4 Bruck an der Leitha Horn 3 - 1 Floridsdorfer AC Deutschlandsberger SC 0 - 7 Salzburg Kitzbühel 0 - 1 LASK Linz Lendorf 1 - 3 Admira Mödling Pinzgau Saalfelden 1 - 6 Mattersburg Stripfing 0 - 1 Austria Lustenau Wiener SK 0 - 4 Ried Ferlach 1 - 3 Gleisdorf Stadlau 1 - 2 Wimpassing Anif 5 - 1 Kufstein Hohenems 3 - 4 Union Gurten SC Mannsdorf 1 - 2 Wolfsberger AC Bad Gleichenberg 5 - 1 Wattens Schwarzach 0 - 3 St. Florian Dornbirn 1 - 5 Altach Hard 0 - 3 Sturm Graz Elektra 2 - 1 Traiskirchen Karabakh Wien 1 - 5 BW Linz Schwaz 0 - 2 Rapid Wien SAK Klagenfurt 0 - 5 Hartberg Austria Klagenfurt 2 - 1 St. Pölten
There are still three matches to be played next week, but here are the Round 2 results so far. No Bundesliga teams were eliminated, though Altach and Salzburg needed extra time and LASK Linz needed PKs to prevail. Two Landesliga (fourth division) teams took out Erste Liga (second division) opponents, as Wimpassing (Burgenlandliga) and ASKÖ Oedt (Oberösterreichliga) upset BW Linz and Austria Lustenau. And in a matchup of two Regionalliga (third division) clubs, St. Florian advanced over Weiz. Round 2 Wimpassing * 3 - 3 BW Linz ASKÖ Oedt 2 - 0 Austria Lustenau Gleisdorf 1 - 2 Wolfsberger AC FTSC Neusiedl am See 1919 0 - 1 Ried Grödig 4 - 4 LASK Linz * St. Florian 1 - 0 Weiz Amstetten 0 - 1 Wacker Innsbruck Horn 3 - 3 Hartberg * Anif 1 - 2 Sturm Graz Vöcklamarkt 0 - 3 Austria Wien Union Gurten 3 - 4 Altach Elektra 0 - 4 Rapid Wien Bruck an der Leitha 1 - 3 Salzburg
In the final three matches of Round 2, three Regionalliga (third division) clubs hosted opponents from higher divisions. Parndorf lost to Bundesliga side Mattersburg, but the other two managed to advance. Having already ousted Bundesliga bottom dweller St. Pölten in the first round, Austria Klagenfurt claimed the scalp of Kapfenberger SV of the Erste Liga (second division). And Bad Gleichenberg took out Admira Mödling, meaning the Bundesliga is left without its two Niederösterreich clubs in the competition. Round 2 Parndorf 1 - 2 Mattersburg Austria Klagenfurt 3 - 0 Kapfenberger SV Bad Gleichenberg 3 - 1 Admira Mödling The final 16 are comprised as follows: Bundesliga (8), Erste Liga (3), Regionalliga (3), Landesliga (2). That's as much lower-league (third and fourth division) representation as I can recall in a long time.
Round 3 ASKÖ Oedt 0 - 3 Mattersburg St.Florian 0 - 4 Hartberg Ried 4 - 1 LASK Linz Sturm Graz 4 - 1 Altach Wimpassing 1 - 0 Wolfsberger AC Bad Gleichenberg 0 - 3 Salzburg Austria Klagenfurt 4 - 2 Wacker Innsbruck Austria Wien 1 - 2 Rapid Wien The big upset of the round was Landesliga (fourth division) club Wimpassing eliminating Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC. Also, Austria Klagenfurt of the Regionalliga (third division) defeated its third straight higher league opponent by taking our Wacker Innsbruck. Rapid won the big Vienna derby over Austria, one of four Bundesliga sides to be eliminated. Only half of the remaining clubs are from the top division, which is somewhat surprising, but the list does include the top three in the league. The final eight are as follows: Salzburg, Sturm Graz, Rapid Wien, Mattersburg (Bundesliga) Ried, Hartberg (Erste Liga) Austria Klagenfurt (Regionalliga) Wimpassing (Landesliga)
Well, the Austrian Cup is on a four-month break until it resumes with the quarterfinals on February 27. All four Bundesliga teams will play at home: Salzburg - Austria Klagenfurt Sturm Graz - Wimpassing Rapid Wien - Ried Mattersburg - Hartberg
Playing at home, all four Bundesliga teams dispatched their lower-level quarterfinal opponents. Rapid had the toughest task against Erste Liga leaders Ried and had to come back from a halftime deficit. The others won quite convincingly. Quarterfinals Mattersburg 4 - 1 Hartberg Sturm Graz 3 - 0 Wimpassing Salzburg 7 - 0 Austria Klagenfurt Rapid Wien 2 - 1 Ried
Semifinals Mattersburg 0 - 0 Salzburg * Sturm Graz 3 - 2 Rapid Wien The top two teams in the Bundesliga will also face eachother for the Cup. Both semifinals went into extra time, and Salzburg’s even to PKs.
Final Sturm Graz 1 - 0 Salzburg (AET) Having just secured its fifth straight Bundesliga championship with a 4-1 win over Sturm Graz, Salzburg was going for its fifth straight Cup title against Sturm as well. Had to like their chances... But as it turned out, Sturm fans greatly outdid their Red Bull counterparts in Klagenfurt and buoyed their team to a great effort. The match remained scoreless. Then Salzburg went down a man with 20 minutes left in regulation. By the end of the 90 minutes, Salzburg had used all three subs, while a pleased Sturm manager had made no changes. Finally, ten minutes from the end of extra time, Sturm Graz got the goal needed to secure the title and end Salzburg’s win streak at 29 ties and four titles. Sturm last won the Cup in 2010. This was a big rollercoaster week that included a heartbreaking Europa League semifinal exit followed by a Bundesliga title followed by a loss in the Cup final. So in the season that saw Salzburg achieve its best result in Europe, it also failed to win the double for the first time in five years.
