The Round 2 fixtures have been drawn. The most interesting is the clash between Bundesliga clubs St. Pölten and Ried. The rest feature lower-level teams hosting either Erste Liga or Bundesliga opponents. Matches will take place September 20 & 21. Bundesliga clubs Mattersburg, Altach, and Ried crashed out of the competition. The first two lost to Regionalliga opponents, while the latter was paired with a fellow Bundesliga side. Horn and Austria Lustenau of the Erste Liga also fell to Regionalliga opposition. The Round of 16, to be played October 25 & 26, will feature the following: Bundesliga (6): FC Admira Wacker Mödling, FC Red Bull Salzburg, FK Austria Wien, SK Puntigamer Sturm Graz, SK Rapid Wien, SKN St.Pölten Erste Liga (6): Blau Weiß Linz, FAC, LASK Linz, KSV 1919, SC Wiener Neustadt, WSG Swarovski Wattens Regionalliga (4): ASK Ebreichsdorf, SK Ertl-Glas Amstetten, SV Grödig, SV Licht Loidl Lafnitz
Round of 16 SV Grödig 1 - 0 Wattens SV Lafnitz 1 - 5 Kapfenberger SV Wiener Neustadt 1 - 3 Admira Mödling Amstetten 3 - 4 LASK Linz ASK Ebreichsdorf 4 - 5 Austria Wien Red Bull Salzburg 2 - 0 Floridsdorfer AC SKN St. Pölten 1* - 1 Sturm Graz BW Linz 0 - 4 Rapid Wien Only one Bundesliga club lost--and that was league leaders Sturm Graz falling in penalties at fellow Bundesliga side St. Pölten. Austria, Rapid, and Salzburg are all still in it. Three lower-division teams advanced: LASK Linz, Kapfenberger SV, and Grödig. Now there's a long break in the competition until the quarterfinals on April 4 & 5.
Quarterfinals SV Grödig 0 - 3 LASK Linz Austria Wien 1 - 2 Admira Mödling Red Bull Salzburg 2 - 1 Kapfenberger SV SKN St. Pölten 1 - 3 Rapid Wien Grödig, the remaining Regionalliga club, kept the match close against Erste Liga leaders LASK Linz but ultimately gave up some late goals. Austria Wien, winner of 27 cups, crashed out at home to Admira Mödling. Rivals Rapid Wien, second with 14 cup titles, advanced. The match that should have been the most lopsided turned out to be the closest. Red Bull Salzburg, winners of the last three cups, needed extra time to advance at home over mid-table Erste Liga side Kapfenberger SV. With the victory, Salzburg extended its cup win streak record to 22 matches. Semifinals will be April 26 & 26.
Semifinals Admira Mödling 0 - 5 Salzburg Rapid Wien 2 - 1 LASK Linz Salzburg easily disposed of Admira Mödling, while Rapid sent the last lower-division side LASK Linz out of the competition. LASK Linz, which will join the other semi-finalists in the Bundesliga next season, tied the match in the 90th minute before Rapid won it in injury time. Rapid has had a poor Bundesliga season by the standards of the club with the most league titles. I'm not sure the last time they finished in the bottom half of the table, but that's looking likely. They will be looking to make amends by dethroning the three-time defending Cup champions Salzburg on June 1.
Final Rapid Wien 1 - 2 Red Bull Salzburg The final took place in Klagenfurt this year. Rapid was looking to salvage something from a season that almost saw them finish in the lower half of the Bundesliga. Red Bull Salzburg was looking to continue its dominance over Austrian soccer. The teams exchanged goals early in the second half, before Salzburg got the winner five minutes from the end. With the 2016/17 Austrian Samsung Cup in hand, Red Bull Salzburg has now won 24 straight cup ties. Impressively, Salzburg has also won its fourth Austrian double in a row. The club is in a class of its own in Austria...
