It's the first time in over two years that Austria haven't emerged from a competitive home match with three points, a fact that will no doubt make Wales feel even more like this was a well-earned point in Vienna. Matchday 7 - 2 Sep Wales - Austria Serbia - Moldova Georgia - Ireland Matchday 8 - 5 Sep Austria - Georgia Ireland - Serbia Moldova - Wales
Wales 1 - 0 Austria This was a tough loss for Austria. Austria now sits in fourth place on 8 points. Gotta make up 5 points on second-place Ireland in the last three rounds. That's almost impossible, especially considering one of Ireland's remaining matches is home to Moldova. The only silver lining is that all three of Austria's remaining matches--Georgia (H), Serbia (H), Moldova (A)--are winnable.
Austria 1 - 1 Georgia Well, I think this result extinguished any hope Austria had. Serbia won at Ireland, which was a favorable outcome, but the Austrians simply couldn't do their part. I caught the last half hour of this one, and Austria just weren't good enough.

On 10 October: Austria beats Moldova and Wales and Ireland draw. If Moldova draws at Ireland, then Austria has to win their games by at least 6 goals and overcome to overcome the goal differential. To qualify for the Playoffs, Austria also needs to not be the worst Second Place Team. Group H is the only group with a possibility of not having a team with 15 points or more. Bosnia would have to lose to Belgium and at Estonia. (or one draw and a disastrous goal differential in the loss) Greece would have to have to lose or draw to Cyprus and Gibraltar.
Austria 3 - 2 Serbia Georgia 0 - 1 Wales Ireland 2 - 0 Moldova Austria's road to Russia has officially ended. Though they beat group leaders Serbia via a couple late goals, Austria needed Wales and Ireland to drop points. Austria will finish Group D in fourth place, leaving Serbia (18), Wales (17), and Ireland (16) to fight for qualification.
Moldova 0 - 1 Austria Serbia 1 - 0 Georgia Wales 0 - 1 Ireland Austria finished the campaign with a pair of wins and 15 points. But no matter what the result of this match, Austria was going to end up in fourth place in Group D. Serbia won at home against Georgia to retain the top spot and automatic WC qualification. Ireland got a huge win at Wales to vault over and eliminate the Welsh. Ireland now goes into the second-place playoff round.
