Australia signs new deal with Nike

    Lucrative deal for FFA
    Wednesday, 13 December 2006 @ 11:22 AM
    sportal.com.au

Football Federation Australia has announced the biggest ever football sponsorship deal in this country, signing Nike as the official performance partner for the next nine years.

In only his third day on the job, new FFA chief executive Ben Buckley welcomed Nike's continued involvement with the sport and said that while the deal was confidential, he could reveal it was about three times more valuable than Nike's previous sponsorship with the national football body.

"It is, by now some distance, the largest sponsorship agreement and corporate partnership agreement that the FFA has ever entered into within Australia," Buckley said in Melbourne.

Nike has been sponsoring the Socceroos, the Matildas and the various Australian junior teams since the inception of FFA in 2004 and according to Buckley, the Australian football jerseys have been embraced as a 'symbol of international sporting success for all Australians' since then.

"It's no wonder so many tens of thousands of Australians now own one and you only have to look at some of the cricket that is going around the country at this particular point in time to see that this particular jersey has become an icon and a sporting symbol to all Australians," Buckley said.

The managing director of Nike Pacific, Paul Zadoff, said that the deal would extend for nine years to include the 2007, 2011 and 2015 Asian Cups as well the as the next two FIFA World Cups for both men and women.

Not only will Nike provide uniforms and equipment for the national teams, but Zadoff said that the company would help to market and grow the game at all levels in Australia.

Maybe why the cricket uniform has gone to an all green outfit for this summer's one day series. They have to get some sort of difference between the two, so the canary yellow one day outfit is gone!! :)

SMH, who cares? We've gone between yellow and green socks since the move from the white socks. The white socks have never really worked with our kit. They only really work if your jersey colour is white a la the current English strip.

They can and should be in some cases. If national colours weren't trifled with the wallabies would still be playing in blue, maroon or green.

Maybe the smh should investigate who authorised the blasphemous change to the current length of the kits shorts. I'm sure the socceroos would have been playing in mid-thigh length shorts for the entire time they were playing with white socks, before some heathen at adidas decided to add about 5 inches of material to the bottom of the shorts.

Maybe nike's next socceroos kit will feature the white socks and a return to the rediculously short shorts. Hell, may as well bring the shirt collars back while we're at it and make the jerseys out of wool.

Glad to see the 'Roos have a new jersey. I still miss the old one with the circled number (were those "Upper 90"s?). A bit dark for me, but I haven't seen the other jersey.
