I hope we play with full teams. Some of their fans seem to love to talk sh*^@ about how they're better than us. Maybe if we beat them they will shut up.

Yeah but can it top the stupidity displayed between Iranian and Mexican fans prior to their meeting last year.

Would this be considered a "good" friendly by this board? Probably not if we don't play on "European soil."

Note that the article is dated February 16. Given that the Australians live in the future, I fear that they may time their visit such that they arrive here already knowing the result of the game and precisely how we beat them, thus allowing them to adjust their tactics to win the game. FIFA should require them to arrive in the US at least 24 hours before kick off.

Out of curiosity when are you playing the Argies? We've got them in June, and Uruguay just prior to the AFC bullshit.

Re: Australia Match later this year?

June 28, for our Copa America opener, in Venezuela.

Funny... weren't you and I merely speculating blindly about this yesterday? :D

Now, for personally selfish reasons, I'd prefer this game to be played at the MCG or at Telstra Dome. But any kind of a meeting between these teams is a really damned good excuse for a friendly... in more ways than one.

The short article in The Age alludes to the game being played towards the end of the year, rather than in the American summer. I'm sure we'll have a full team on the pitch at that time, but the Socceroos might not, with both the Euro and A-League seasons underway.

But once this match is confirmed, this is something that my household, for one -- being married to an Aussie woman -- will circle our calendars for.

And funny enough... this rumor's being floated on the date of my wedding anniversary, too. :)

Actually, wouldn't this be a good match to be played in London at Craven Cottage or the like?
We both have several players over there.

Re: Australia Match later this year?

I wouldn't be surprised if that happened. Certainly a possibility.

And FWIW, the Socceroos' "home away from home" for staging friendlies in London has been Loftus Road, which is QPR's home ground.

They recently (as of a couple of weeks ago, or so) played Denmark there.

i'd hope this would be a late may match, before gold cup...

scotland and australia before gold cup isn't too bad, although neither is a latin style side!!!

guess that's why we get ecuador and guatemala in march??

so the lad down under is complaining about being in asia, versus oceania, and basically having a play-off to advance to the finals??

Australia? Hell yeah bring 'em on! I love the Socceroos. Our federations and soccer movement almost mimic each other perfectly. I have wanted a US-Aussie match-up for years. London would be perfect and there probably would be a great crowd. But where we play it doesn't matter. They would be a perfect test before the GC and CA!

BA's first game as US coach was against Australia at Spartan Stadium (0-0 tie IIRC)

Spot on. I was there for that one.

Was a dreary match on a dreary night, and my right arm was in a cast. But at least my painkillers were good. :)

Seriously, we are equal with the Socceroos. Also, in Germany last year, the most amicable fans were the Australians IMHO.

We are botrh unpretentious and respectful of those better than us. We're not the pompous ingrates that are most other soccer nations (see Mexico).

    So bring 'em on!!!!

Mm..I'm almost sure that's not the way we're perceived by the rest of the soccer nations (xcept Central Americans and the U.S. of course)

Re: Australia Match later this year?

Except that the reports are alluding that the game could be played later in the year, and not necessarily as a pre-Gold Cup/Copa America tuneup.

In any event, no date has been set in stone as of yet.

Re: Australia Match later this year?

This needs to be re-emphasized, with regards to speculation over a date.

Australia is already scheduled to play games against Uruguay in Sydney and against Argentina in Melbourne, at the MCG, in June.

There's no way we can play them as a tuneup for our big tournaments.
