So there it is, and thank god they've made a statement http://www.espnfc.us/atlanta-united...emns-homophobic-chant-heard-at-debut-mls-game
Excellent question. This needs to be more than a damned press release. We need a real outreach here. The chant is horrific.
Agreed. As were the select few idiots throwing things on the field. But out of 55k I guess there will always be a few. I deplore ESPN soccer coverage so if you hadn't posted that I wouldn't have known. Ironically, I had just completed the fan council survey and requested a public remonstration as well as lengthy bans before seeing the article.
People in the SG section were telling people to not chant that but, obviously, people didn't pay attention. So frustrating.
Yeah there must've been alot of people saying it though because everyone could hear the chant. There was a small handful behind me in the upper deck chanting it, but I really don't exactly know how to stamp it out fully? Maybe AUFC has a flier in the program and an announcement before the game that says anyone who does that chant risks being reprimanded? I dunno.
That might be the only way. It's such a stupid and pointless chant. Why people continue to do it is beyond me.
I have found that, outside a few select places where people KNOW football, they just do what they THINK is what you're SUPPOSED to do. They have no idea what it means, why they're doing it, etc.
