BREAKING: Ashley Young has agreed personal terms with Inter as he nears a move from Manchester United, reports @FabrizioRomano pic.twitter.com/wxPoEKM54d— B/R Football (@brfootball) January 11, 2020 According to Romano, he's agreed a year contract with Inter. Talks are ongoing between both clubs to finalize the deal effective immediately. Sidenote, with Shaw now injured, it will be interesting to see what ramifications, if any, that will have on AY's prospective move to Milan this month...
Nice sentiment but the club clearly showed they wanted to keep him for the remainder of the season at least (and possibly beyond). Throw in the fresh injury to Shaw and he won't be going anywhere for now, I fear.
And he showed he does not want to be here. Put Laird at LB and I am sure we wont miss much from Young.
I'd much rather have Laird in the mix as well. But to think that AY is going to be cast aside for now bc he wants to leave, is simply wishful thinking. Ole and United, despite AY's claims were actively trying to block his move this month. It is what it is, even more so with us being a body down... The best hope we've got is that the report above is not factual and Inter will continue with their pursuit of AY.
Inter deal still on? https://www.skysports.com/football/...lan-remain-interested-in-man-utd-club-captain
Fee agreed between @ManUtd and @Inter_en for Ashley Young. 1.5m Euros. Understand there will be an extra payment if Inter win Serie A.— Simon Stone (@sistoney67) January 16, 2020
Thank God. With them getting another LB I thought for sure we would do something stupid like extend him for another year. Thanks for everything Young, now go away.
Good move for all parties concerned: hope AY does well in Italy and that he can win perhaps even some things. We no longer needed him and need to make room for our up and coming youngsters. Real chances hopefully on the horizon for Dalot and hopefully Laird as well. Medical is lined up for tomorrow.
Sky got it too https://www.skysports.com/football/...united-and-inter-milan-agree-deal-for-veteran would have rathered a first option on a player than the £1.3m. even if just a first loan option. regardless, it's another step forward in the rebuild. better than losing £1.3m and more in wages of the offered extra year too i suppose
Young, getting old, was poor too often over the last few years but he did put in a few very solid performances as well. Best for all he moves on. This is a squad being built for the future. I just hope that future doesn't take another 5 years to arrive. IMHO we've waited long enough and should be (but probably won't be) a contender for next season's PL trophy.
Like a lot of our players he stayed too long owing to our lack of investment in replacements - always cheaper short-term for Ed to extend rather than invest. The issues for me were always with the club and the various managers in not giving us other people leaving him as our least worse option to take corners, free-kicks etc. Also got minutes owing to Darmian, Dalot, Shaw etc. failing to live up to expectations (bad recruitment). Looking at the length of service and his attitude over those years, can't fault his loyalty, effort and commitment. Thanks Ash and best wishes for the future
A few things... AY always tried and was almost always available. I can't hate on him for that. Not his fault he wasn't good enough. I think people got a bit carried away when we offered him an extension. It is quite clear why we didn't want him gone. We currently have 1 fit LB and he's 19yo. The 'back up' in Shaw is fit maybe 50% of the time. I'm certain we have plans for another LB, potentially trying Laird on the left in the reserves or something like that, but in the short-term, it made sense to have a 34yo as backup. To AY's immense credit, it is clear he communicated with the management. He told them he didn't want to stay unless he was first choice and he's not stupid. He knows Williams is better than he is and he knows he's not getting minutes off AWB. Hell, as long as he's a backup, beyond the next few weeks while Shaw regains fitness, why would we play him and not develop Shaw? Young wanted out and got it. More power to him.
Thanks for everything, AY! Kind of agree with Ducker's position Best of luck to Ashley Young at Inter. Served United with great professionalism for eight and a half years and proved himself most adaptable, playing in all manner of positions. Took a lot of unfair flak when he was plugging holes he shouldn't have had to. One of the good guys— James Ducker (@TelegraphDucker) January 16, 2020 Love him or hate him, the guy did what he had to go to contribute and be of service to the team. He never complained about it and did his best. Hope he finds success with Inter, except if/when they face us which I have a sneaky feeling will happen in the EL... In the end though, he's another player who needed to go and that is the one area I will give Ole complete credit: what he's done in clearing out the deadwood and reducing our bulging wage bill, can not be denied.
