What kits were the Sahuaros wearing Saturday? I arrived late, @ 4:40 - 1st half in progress and set up on the West side of field 11 for good viewing. Started rooting for the blue shorts and yellow shirts, (no logos that I could see).
The Sahuaros were in the yellow shirts. They were recently donated to the team and there hasn't been enough free time to have logo added.
Re: Arizona Sahuaros in Verizon Copa Alianza The Sahuros won their quarterfinal match 2-1 over Leon, a Phoenix team. Unfortunately they were unable to duplicate the feat in the semifinal, as they fell to Barcelona of Tucson, also by a 2-1 score.
Arizona Sahuaros US Open Cup qualification The Arizona Sahuaros begin their quest to qualify for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The USASA Region IV qualifications are being held in Sacramento from May 21-23.
Re: Arizona Sahuaros US Open Cup qualification The Sahuaros lost to Sacramento Gold on May 21, but followed that up by defeating Yakima United and drawing against Doxa-Italia on May 22. That earned the team a spot in the semifinals vs the Bay Area Ambassadors on Sunday. A win will earn the Sahuaros a spot in the US Open Cup, as both finalists in Region IV qualify.
Re: Arizona Sahuaros qualify for US Open Cup Correction from previous post. The Sahuaros played Real San Jose in a semifinal of the Region IV US Open qualifying tourney. The good news... the Sahuaros won 2-1, earning a berth in the Open. This will be the club's 5th appearance in the Open. They will play the Bay Area Ambassadors in the final. Both clubs are in the Open as the two USASA Region IV representatives.
Re: Arizona Sahuaros qualify for US Open Cup Congrats to the Sahuaros! Hopefully they get a home game!
Re: Arizona Sahuaros qualify for US Open Cup The Sahuaros lost to the Bay Area Ambassadors in the final, but as mentioned earlier have qualified for their 3rd straight US Open Cup. Here's a writeup that highlights some of the players that excelled for the Sahuaros, including veterans Skelly Keller and Mitch Garcia along with newer team members Chris and Brian Green and Pat Perkins.
Re: Arizona Sahuaros qualify for US Open Cup Unfortunately, the Sahuaros did not get a home game for its first round US Open Cup match. They will play Ventura County Fusion(PDL) at Ventura College in Ventura CA on June 15 at 7:05pm.
Re: Arizona Sahuaros qualify for US Open Cup The Sahuaros defeated the Ventura County Fusion(PDL) in PK's 4-2 after playing to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes!!!! The team will play the Austin Aztex(USL-1) on June 22nd in a 2nd round match. Late Edit: The game will be played at House Park in Austin TX at 7:30pm(CDT). LH US Open Cup bracket.
holy crap...120? glad it wasn't in AZ then. Sucks I won't be able to go if it's home, working nights this month and I already have that Wednesday off for the USA/Algeria match.
The Austin Aztex defeated the Sahuaros in their 2nd round L.H. US Open Cup match on Tuesday night by a score of 3-1. You can read more about it at the Sahuaros website. Next up for the Arizona team is the USASA national championship, which will be played in Overland Park KS July 23-25. The Sahuaros will be playing in the U-23 bracket.
Why have the Sahuaros never tried to move up the US soccer pyramid and become a division 3 team? I know there are at least 2 different efforts to try to bring a pro team to Phoenix; more than likely this will be a division 2 or division 3 team. It seems the Sahuaros could just as easily be that division 3 team.
Do you mean USL-2? Travel expense would seem the most obvious reason. Pittsburgh is the western-most team, now that Cleveland folded after being 'pushed' up to USL-1 and Austin moved up to USL-1. They are on hiatus from the NPSL for the 2nd year running for the same reason. No teams within reasonable travel distance to form a SW division.
Yes, but the USL2 has expressed interest in forming a Western Conference. Also, I think this is what the Phoenix Monsoon are looking to do (although they claim it will be at the division 2 level).
Yes, but I think the MLS wants to see: 1) Stadium or plans to build a soccer specific stadium 2) An existing pro team (similar to Portland Timbers model) 3) Ownership group of at least $500 million 4) Strong pre-season ticket sales campaign Phoenix is not in a position to meet any of this yet. The road to an MLS team is by first having a profitable D2 team then work on plans for a stadium.
