I've added the HGPs that have moved clubs in. Here's the average HGP salary per year signed. If the loaning club is paying all of or part of the player's salary, then you get cap relief. Basically you're only on the hook for the money that MLS is actually paying the player. I'm sure IFK Göteborg is paying a portion of Mix's salary and NYCFC is getting cap relief equal to whatever IFK is paying. You can loan one player to your USL affiliate and get both roster and cap relief if that player is under 25, makes the senior minimum or less and must be on loan for the entirety of the year without the ability to recall him (goalkeeper being an exception in a cases of extreme hardship). The rest of the players you loan to your affiliate must be free.
For certain values of 800k. You're not going to pay down a 15 million player, but you can pay down an 800k salary with GarberBucks (TAM and GAM) - in fact, that's exactly what TAM is designed to do - fill in the donut hole created when teams max out on DPs and end up with only enough Salary Budget to fill the rest of the roster with scrubs.
If the DP cutoff is currently $400k, this represents about $10 million in TAM/GAM spending to pay down salaries, or a bit under 500k/team.
I hate to be a pendant, but can we not use the word "cap". MLS does not have a Salary Cap. They have a Salary Budget. That Salary Budget includes money spent on the 18-20 first team players up to the league maximum. It does not include salary buy-downs (GAM/TAM), nor the over max spending by teams themselves (DP). I also does not include the ten players on the extended and development rosters (up to 10 players - including HG and GA players). One of the issues we have when new posters show up is that they don't always understand that. Let's agree to say "Budget" when we mean "Budget" and not use the word "Cap" as shorthand for "Salary Budget" as it often creates confusion for new (and a few select special oldtime) posters. Thanks
This way, cheap-ass teams like the Revs can say "It's totally preposterous to suggest that we spend below the cap. We have our budget, and whether we come in under or over budget, that's a question our accountants will figure out. We are committed to putting out the finest team our budgeted money can buy, and nothing will stop us from doing that."
It would be interesting to work out how much each club is spending as opposed to totaling their salaries.

When even the "cheap-ass" Revs are spending about 50% more in reported total compensation than the 2017 CBA mandated Salary Budget, it shows how ridiculous it is to refer to the Salary Budget as a cap. I used to say that the salary budget is where MLS per team spending started. With all the TAM, GAM, HG and GA spots, and $53K or $60K players on the supplemental roster that's not even true anymore. Matt Doyle crunched the numbers and came up with a figure of ~$6 mil. With the ability to trade allocation money and bank it, I'd say that the real baseline "floor" for MLS team spending is around $5 mil per team (before DPs and team provided incentives and allowances). That is reflected in the numbers that have just been released. And yes, I know that there were those years that the Revs were below the Salary Budget in the numbers the PU reported and allegedly let allocation expire. But that was about a decade ago IIRC, in a different MLS. When you're one-tenth of the ownership of the league, you might have a bit more incentive to save money anywhere you can.

This year it is 135k. That is the biggest jump I have ever seen. This mostly means that the league has been investing a lot in players on the higher end of the pay scale thanks to TAM. A lot of lower end players are being pushed out. A lot of solid starters are now becoming solid bench players. Meanwhile, the average has mostly stayed the same. 316k is now 326k. In this case, I think it means that the roster has expanded by two players with 50k salary. If you take out DPs and players with a basic salary of between $480k and $1 million (excluding Zardes) the median for the remainder is $113,462.50...I think. I get 51 DP, 41 TAM and 524 other.
All true, and while the rules of the game have changed, the overal philosophy of the team is still very much in the "cheap-ass" mode. Is thre any team in the league that carries fewer players on their roster? Were there any teams who had fewer trialists in camp this winter? The Revs will do the barest of minimums to maintain a reasonably competitive team and the only thing that matters is to be near the break-even point in the fiscal ledger. A trip to MLS Cup is all well and good, but it really is just gravy on top of the cake.
Rapids fans may have something to say about a couple points. That team is notorious for leaving roster spots unfilled.
