Is is too soon for a “Discuss AOC’s Cosmic Domination Here” thread?

My initial reading of that was "AUFC's Cosmic Domination." Specially with Auria repping your post.

We'll know what kind of Congressperson she is if she starts "killing it financially" over the next two years, LOL.

Why does this post remind me of "Taxi Driver"?

You missed the point. Prior to arriving in Washington Ocasio-Cortez stated:

"Next time we have a gov shutdown, Congressional salaries should be furloughed as well.

It’s completely unacceptable that members of Congress can force a government shutdown on partisan lines & then have Congressional salaries exempt from that decision.

    Have some integrity".
As far I know Congressional salaries are not being furloughed and AOC is still drawing a paycheck. No word yet if she is able to pay her rent. ;)

I didn't miss the point. We are talking about two different things. I thought it was pretty obvious.

Whether members of Congress are getting paid during a furlough and if they come into Congress without a pot to piss in -- but leave wealthy -- are two different things.

I was referring to the latter -- as was @Cascarino's Pizzeria I believe.

Well I never implied that she was in Washington to enrich herself, unlike many of her colleagues, so I am not sure why you brought the point up.

Because you repeated her quote which talked about the integrity of people in Congress. I never said you implied any such thing.

So we should be seeing legislation from her furloughing Congressional paychecks any minute now, right? I won't hold my breath. ;)

Dapip, if we had a global survey and ask if the UN should tax the 1% of the world a 70% tax rate so the UN can use that money to help provide health services, schools and other needs to the very poor in the world.

    In your opinion.

How many people that live with an income of less that 5 dollars per day would say yes?

How many of people that make more than 32K-34K a years would say yes?

Who cares? Why not ask, what if Spartacus had a Piper Cub?

I don’t understand your obsession with this hypothetical. The world we live in has nation-states as its organizing principle.

That it is very logical for people to vote to raise taxes on the other. Specially if the other are people that make more money than you do.

So me voting for 70% tax on income of 10 million per year (income above that) is easy to say yes.

A vote to put a 70% tax on my income that is above 32K, would be much more difficult for me to vote yes.

If Spartacus was paying 70% in taxes, he wouldn’t have had enough left to buy a Piper Cub.

BTW even if we do pass a 70% tax on the rich (over 10 million), this gets us (before higher tax avoidance kicks in) around 720 billion over 10 years.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/busi...t-raise/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.265f7473f84d

The thing you have to pick one of those programs (you can do a few of the "cheaper" ones) or raise more taxes (increase the debt).

So the 70% tax is a start, it i snot the full answer.

This site has it even lower

    https://qz.com/1517783/how-much-could-ocasio-cortezs-70-tax-rate-bring-in/

    This part is important.
This site puts it at 800 billion.

    https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/01/09/who-would-pay-a-70-tax-rate-on-income-over-10-mill.aspx

To actually raise enough revenue all taxes will have to go up.

even if you keep taxes the same for all non rich (currently 510K and above pay 37%)

So we could do something like

    510K+ 40%
    1M+ 50%
    5M+ 60%
    10M+ 70%

That could raise much more than 800 billion over 70 years.

    1. What would be the threshold for the global tax on the 1%?

    2. And obviously you and all the people that loves to scare us about taxes forget to mention that we will no longer be paying corporations for healthcare coverage and that your premiums and copayments will now be collected by government. IOW, to most consumers the bill will remain around the same figure.
